Greenpeace
Greenpeace movement began in 1971 when the US government planned to carry out underground nuclear tests near Alaska. A group of North American and Canadian volunteers and journalists sailed to the test area and began their protest. The enormous publicity created by the protest forced the Americans to abandon their plans after the first test. Ever since then, Greenpeace has been campaigning against environmental degradation. Greenpeace is a non-profit organization, with a presence in 40 countries across Europe, Asia and the Pacific. Most people working for Greenpeace are teenage and experienced volunteers. They fight against the most crucial threats to our planets biodiversity and environment. To maintain its independence, Greenpeace does not accept donations from governments or private companies, but welcomes contributions from individual supporters. As a global organization, Greenpeace acts to change attitudes and behaviors by protecting and conserving the environment and by promoting peace. AFTER READING ACTIVITY I.
