MydinWahab Enterprise (MWE) started his business in 1992 officially and had experiences in the retail and wholesale

grocery industry for 20 years. The business was a family business and Mr.Mohd Mydin inherited and continued the legacy from his late father, Mr. Abdul Wahab. In the late of 90s, the late Mr.AbdulWahab opened a small sundry shop that sold only newspaper and groceries. After he died, Mr.Mohd Mydin as the heir of the sundry shop took the business and started with his own plan. He started off by supplying sundries and daily necessities to canteens in factories and also restaurants around Butterworth. After MWE gained a few regular customers around Seberang Perai and Georgetown, Mr.Mohd Mydin took a risk by starting to supply at the restaurants in Kedah and Ipoh. This gave an impact to the business when the profit increased for the whole year. They tried to form a few strategies to increase the number of customers and some of it was effective to the business. Resources The financial resources or the business funding is very crucial in every company. Financial resources can be gained from various sources. Usually, a company would mainly gain from the personal accounts of the companys founder. Other alternative of obtaining financial resources includes loans from financial institutions, friends and relatives, private investors and also the local government. For Mydin Wahab Enterprise, the financial resources had been well taken care of as Mr.Mydin inherited the business from his father. Therefore, the start-up funding for the business was gained from the personal accounts of the founder which is Mr.Wahab. Every business needs to have the appropriate physical resources to survive, whether it is a smallhome business or a retail operation with few branches. This aspect of a business can lead to a slight increase in expenditure. This includes things such as a proper workspace, a functioning telephone line, an adequate information system and effective marketing methods. Therefore, it can be important for a business to carefully assess these needs before starting and advancing in making purchases. Comfortable building and strategic location of the business may affect the worker and business productivity level. Mydin Wahab Enterprise is located in a three double-storey shop houses. The company had also prepared a hostel in the upper level of one of the shop houses for his employees. This shows that the employees welfare is secured. One of the shop-houses is also reserved for storage of goods. Besides that, the management office is located in the same building. These may directly boost up the companys effectiveness and efficiency. The physical resource of a business involves deciding whether operating activities should take place in a store or in an office. Well-designed space is needed in order to accommodate the flow of work and the movement of the employees, goods and the customers. We can clearly see that Mydin Wahab Enterprises primary objective in deciding the size of the work area is that he had make two of the shophouses as the business main premises where the employees and customers have ample space to move around. This also shows that Mydin Wahab Enterprise prepared an efficient placement for their goods and physical assets.

For human resources of the company, Mydin Wahab Enterprise is using labour forces that are able to assist in transporting goods into the shop, dealing with customers and handling the daily sales transactions of the company. They have also hired a supervisor; this is to ensure that the workers complete the jobs that have been assigned to them. Mydin Wahab Enterprise has hired an amount of ten foreign workers from Bangladesh and India. The welfare of these workers is also being taken care of by the company. They have been provided with a residential unit. Other than that, their daily meals are also provided by Mydin Wahab Enterprise. This would also create a great employer-employee relationship. Mydin Wahab Enterprise provided the basic necessities for its employees due to the reason that it could secure the best possible living standards for their employees. If the employees are not happy with the working conditions, it would lead to high labour turnover, bad time-keeping, pending in job tasks and would also lead to high levels of absenteeism. It may also lead in the form of slackness by the workers or ignoring rules and laziness. The reward system that Mydin Wahab Enterprise implemented in the form of monthly salary would prove to the employees that they are appreciated by their hard work and valued by the company An organizational structure is an important aspect of business resources. Operations will run smoothly in the company and communication among the people in the company will become easier. Mydin Wahab Enterprise has an amount of 15-20 people in its company and they have a simple formal organization structure. In this case, these employees would have numerous responsibilities where some of the responsibilities would include multiple functions. For example, a store worker at Mydin Wahab Enterprise is responsible in arranging goods but he might also be responsible on making sure that the goods are shipped in to the shop on time. As this company grows, it can decide in adding more management levels. Few of the roles will become more defined. By having the organizational structure, Mydin Wahab Enterprise will be able to ensure that they have an improved operational efficiency. The staff will at least know who to report to for guidance, supervision and submission of work. If there is no formal organizational structure, workers would not know to whom they should report to when they encounter with any issue or emergency situation. There will also be confusion on who has the final responsibility over different matters. All these confusions and issues are not good for the business and it can lead to poor communication, low productivity and unaccountability. Their main activity is supplying sundries and daily necessities to restaurants and canteens around Penang, Kedah and Ipoh. Mydin Wahab Enterprise is also capable in providing wholesale service to its buyers The core competence of Mydin Wahab Enterprise is their availability of goods. Restaurants and canteens in Penang area will come directly to the shop whenever they are running out of supplies. We were also told that, whenever the restaurants and canteens are facing unexpected shortage of supply, Mydin Wahab Enterprise will always have the goods they need. Mydin Wahab Enterprise also monitors the expiry dates for each of the goods in their storage. This way, the supply of goods for the restaurants and canteens are always in perfect condition. Comparing to their next-door competitor, Subham, restaurants and canteens around the area do not rely on them for supply of goods as they have limited amount of goods. Mydin Wahab Enterprise does not face shortage of goods. Their competitor, sometimes, also will purchase goods from Mydin Wahab Enterprise whenever they are facing shortage. The fact that they have

been established for 20 years is also a value-added point for their core competence. Customers do not face trust issue with Mydin Wahab Enterprise because they are a well-established company.

A core competence which is important to the business operation but is not exceptional in any ways should not be considered as a core competence for a company. This is because it will not differentiate the business from its competitors or any other similar businesses. For example, the process in documenting daily sales by MydinWahab Enterprise which uses common computer and is done by staff with basic knowledge, cannot be considered as a core competence. This process is unlikely to generate any differentiation over its main rival business, Subham, or other rival businesses. 5.1.1- SWOT Matrix Review Strength Opportunities Strategies 1. MydinWahab Enterprise should come up with an online ordering services (S1, O3) This can be a great opportunity to MydinWahab Enterprise (MWE) to boost up their sales by going online as nowadays people are really advance in technologies. 2. Expand their businesses by opening new branches (S2, O5) This can be the advantages for MWE if it opens in other places as people will get to know them and their nasikandar groceries. 3. Proper account management. (S3,S4, 01,03) MWE should introduce a book keeping for entire customers to monitor all the transactions and business activities. Strength Threats Strategies 1. Promotion to a loyal customer (S2, T1) In order to sustain the loyalty customer, MWE should develop a new idea on how to promote their products. Loyal customers who bought in bulk can get a special discount or extra amount quantity of products. 2. Come up with Membership card (S2, T2) In order to make MWE more interesting business, they can come up with membership card for their customers. The card can be as collecting a point or whoever owned the card will receive special offer such as 10% discount or special price for certain products. 3. Partner up with competitor (S6, T3, T4, T6) For MWE, their main competitor is Subham. In conjunction to be more successful in this industry, both of them should partner up. This will lead towards products diversification and they can expand their business all over Malaysia. Weaknesses Threats Strategies 1. Build up parking space or delivery services (W6, T2) In order to sustain their regular and new customer, MydinWahab should build up new parking space to cater the entire new and regular customer or make a delivery services for those customer that does not park their vehicle.

Introduce new products instead of NasiKandar thing (W4, T1) Instead of continue with supplying nasikandar, MWE can try to introduce new product for example Western or Fast food product (Frozen hotdogs, nuggets) for competitive advantage. 3. Proper stock management (W3, T5) With proper management of stock take, MWE can avoid buying extra stock. Weaknesses Opportunities Strategies 1. Send employees to learn about English (W1, O2) This can be the advantages for MWE as their employees will gain more knowledge and at the same time will give extra benefits to welcome new tourist to the shop. 2. Proper recording daily sales transaction (W2, W3 & 03) Since MWE are not doing proper daily recording sales, so they can implement it now and can see whether they doing great or not. 3. Introduce MydinWahab Enterprise product line (W4, 04, 05, 02) Since MWE competitors is nearby like Giant and Tesco, by introducing MWE product line and place the product at their competitor shop, MWE product can be sold and other people can meet MWE product line.

Our opinion: Storage/warehouse: hypermarket such as Giant, Tesco and AEONBIG (formerly known as Carrefour) are competitors to Mydin Wahah Enterprise. Mydin Wahab Ent should take initiative to upgrade its business operation. The company can expand more space for the purpose of storage of groceries stock, plus adding additional cold storage space. This is to ensure that goods such as vegetables, fish, meat and chicken can be kept safely and always stay fresh. The other MWE problem is that it has limited parking space on its business establishment. By having a bigger storage/warehouse, it will attract more customers to come and shop with ease at Mydin Wahab, thus more parking spaces are needed. Bigger spaces need a bigger investment. Currently, MWE has limited resources in capital for new investment. Small Medium Enterprise Bank Berhad (SME BANK), provides financial solution to those who need a capital to invest in new assets, by using Islamic financial method. One of the SME Bank package is I-Enterprise Financing Premises (I-EPF). I-EPF is a financing package to part finance the purchase or re-finance premises such as factory, shop-office or shop-lot in commercial complexes whether completed or under construction. The package is bundled together with working capital to support business operations and/or additional fund. Financing will be using Islamic Bai Bithaman for its financing the premises. Is an Islamic financing product involving sale of goods where the sale price is payable on instalment basis. This type of transaction is best referred to as "deferred payment sale". However, in layman term, it's just a purchase of good on credit. In Moving forward the business MWE should consider expand to is storage/warehouse is idea to have good storage space, andadditional cold storage space business, bigger storage/warehouse provide ample space for MWE workers and customer to its store and also to create more opportunity of sales and marketing by provide more parking space for its existing customer and new customer.

Our opinion: Human Resources :

MWE is family companies, it managing the business by themselves ,by looking at the figure above ,it show that all the business managing by themselves from the owner until supervisor except the general worker, MWE use 16 foreign employee which origin from India and Bangladesh (assuming 20 employee exclude the manager Mr.Mydin). From the figure above we can see that MWE is straight forward and simple organisational. MWE does not a need complicated structure and so need Human Resources Department to have an efficient and experience worker. While to have and efficient and experience worker MWE provide a good beneficial such giving salary as reward to its hardworking employee. Mr.Wahab provide allowance such as food which is groceries and fresh goods to be cook by themselve (foreign employee) and accommodation to its foreign employee that located at one of the 1st floor of the business lots. But still Mr.Wahab need to provide to itsbasic language training in communicating in Malay and English language, this benefit to help improve communication for day-to-day operation and also to convenience for its customer when they need help from MWE employee. In order to have safe good accounting report and use proper accounting recording system such as using accounting software , MWE should appointing accountant background employee which does not have related with the family business, this is beacause to ensure safeguard bookkeeping transaction. An accountant ensure to keep book record in proper accounting method and also to maintain the business financial position statement , statement of cash flow and so to maintain customer credit term if any. MWE need a proper employee to maintain the business profit by giving the employee reward such giving bonus

annually base on the performance of the workers, this reward could eliminate the worker to be demotivate of day-to-day operation.
