On 4-20-99, members of the Denver Police Department responded to a Citywide call for help from
the Jefferson County Sheriffs Department. The call came out on the Denver Police Department
dispatch system at approximately 1132 HRS. Officers responded to the scene within minutes from
most Police and Sheriffs Departments from the Metro area. Denver, Jefferson County 510,
Lakewood, and Arapahoe County Sheriff's Department set up their Command POSts at Leawood A.ve
& Pierce St. At approximately 1215 HRS, reporting Detective was assigned to act as aid and scribe
to Captain Michael O'Neill. Captain O'Neill, known as Patrol one, was designated as the
Commander of the Command Post.

04-20-99 Directed to Respond to University Hospital Emergency Department by Lt. Y ount, on wounded
1410 hrs party from Columbine High SChool.

On Scene. Met with Dets. Wayne Bryant and ClIuck Marshall of Arvada P.D., who were also
dispatched to that loeanon, Briefing by these officers revealed that subject was a Mark Taylor,
with a through and through gunshot wound to his upper chest, and a through and thtough
gunshot wound to his left thigh, exiting out the left buttock. Tayler was reported to be
conscious and undergoing medical procedures at this time. He was not interviewed due to
treatment, but clothing had been recovered, bag and secured by the Arvada detectives.

1444 hrs Information from Joyce Cashman. Vice-President of Universiry Hospital, reported that Taylor
was in radiology, and would be moved to surgery, for exploratory surgery,

1500 hrs Shultz advised doctors and security of types of weapons suspected involved, as well as explosive
devices, and asked that all additional victims be thoroughly searched prior to entry to E.R.

1509 hrs Cashman related Taylor now moving to surgery.

546 hrs Donna Taylor 10-14-48, Victim's mother, interviewed by Shultz and Bryant. She bad no
information. Her son was new at this school, transterring there about six weeks ago. No
friends there and no thteats known to her.

1548 hrs Interrupted interview due to Dr. Nahlor briefing mother. Prognosis good, no vital organs
damaged.

1629 hrs Interviewed Jennifer Harmon 12-28-80. who is cousin to victim, She attends Columbine H.S.
and gives Taylor rides to and from school. States she was thtee classes in morning, then left
school with boyfriend, John Reffel, for lunch. on her return, she related, shootings had
apparently occurred. She provided background information on members of Trench-coat Mafia,
States three or four are in her creative writing class and always talk and write about blood and
death. States she had heard through other students that 4-20 was important and something was
going to happen. Saw that none of members of Trench-coat mafia were in classes today. Saw
Brian driving around right after the shooting. Hannon stated the TIC Mafia always parks in the
same place in the senior lot, and they drive cars that have numerous heavy-metal band stickers
on them. She said the TiC Mafia members listened to heavy-metal music about killing people.
She also related information about several people who may currently be involved (Rebecca) and
used to be involved (Pauline). (Detailed notes were taken by Det, Bryant to be typed and given
to primary investigators.)

1705 hrs Interviewed John Reffel IV. He started at Columbine in fall. and is a senior. Does not know
or talk with any of TIC Mafia. Feels they vandalized his car once in football season because
he parked in their spot and they called him names. Had not heard any rumors of problems or
threats. Was with Jennifer Harmon, at lunch, from 1115 to 1145 hrs. (Detailed notes were
taken by Det, Bryant to be typed and given to primary investigators )

check in the Trauma Unit revealed Taylor to be in the Burn/Trauma Unit, intubated 3nd
recovering. Staff reports be will be unable to make a statement for 24-48 hours.

1600 nrs Sl:lIJ.ltz clears University Hospital and travels to Denver Health Medical Center to assist Martinez
and Campbell. Gone on arrival. Dismissed for evening.

COLUMBINE/HoMICIDE

On 4-20-99, at approximately 1200 HRS., Detective Staskin and Det. Keiser responded to
Columbine H.S. on a report of shots fired in the School and a citywide call for assistance by the
Jefferson County Sheriff's Department. Upon arrival at the Command Post on Pierce St. north
of the School, Det. Staskin was ordered to act as Scribe and aid to Captain O'Neill. Captain
O'Neill was Patrol 1 f and Commander of the Command Post. Reporting Detective maintained
the log for Captain O'Neill and acted as runner. Reporting Detective did not enter the School or
-')uch or seize evidence. Reporting Detective did not take statements or interview any
.vitnesses. Det. Staskin remained in the area of the Command Post and assisted in directing
Denver Officers through out the entire incident. Reporting Detective did not take any further
action.

SUBJECT: Columbine High School Command Post Log

On 4-20-99, members of the Denver Police Department responded to a Citywide call for help from
the Jefferson County Sheriffs Department The call came out on the Denver Police Department
dispatch system at approximately 1132 FIRS. Officers responded to the scene within minutes from
most Police and Sheriffs Departments from the Metro area. Denver, Jefferson County SIO,
Lakewood, and Arapahoe County Sheriffs Department set up their Command Posts at Leawood Ave
& Pierce St, At approximately 1215 !IRS, reporting Detective was assigned to act as aid and scribe
to Captain Michael O'Neill. Captain O'Neill, known as Patrol one, was designated as the
Commander of the Command Post

1215 !IRS

A request was made through Police Dispatch for the Mobile Command Post to respond to Leawood
ave & Pierce St.

Captain Sandoval was assigned to Command the outside Perimeter.

Captain Gallagher was assigned to Command the Traffic (S.O.B.) units.

Metro SW AT units were arriving and set up just to the South of the Command Post and their
commander began to consult with Patrol one and Jefferson County Command Post.

Jefferson County SIO requested Denver units deploy to the south of the school to assist their unit.
Officers from Dist, 4 responded immediately.

1220 !IRS

Officers from Dist, 4 aired that they were taking fire and needed paramedics for a number of
wounded students. Jeffco/Fire & Littleton Fire & Paramedics were notified.

Denver SWAT units immediately responded to cover the Dist. 4 Officers and Paramedics on the
south side of the building.

A decision was made and aired to have all Officers inform arriving parents to respond to Leawood
Elementary for information and a location to be reunited with their children as they exited the school
or were rescued.

Denver Officers were dispatched to direct traffic at all intersections around the perimeter. The main
intersection was Bowles ave & Pierce St.

1225 MRS

Captain O'Neill requested that V.A. staff from Denver respond immediately to assist with students,
parents, and School staff. The V.A. staff were directed to respond to the Command Post to obtain
their assignments. The majority of the V.A. staffwere assigned to Leawood Elementary.

1230 MRS

SWAT Units from a number of different Departments arrived and suited up by the Command Post
and were given their assignments to coordinate with the Jefferson County SWAT for entry to the
School.

An area adjacent to the Command Post was cleared for additional ambulances & Fire as well as
arriving paramedics.

Patrol One attended a briefing in the Jefferson County Mobile Command Post. The initial reports
revealed a confirmation of seven gunshot victims but the number was expected to be higher from
radio reports from Officers on the South side of the school. Jefferson County Command Post
supervisor, Lt. Walcher, stated that at least two suspects had been observed in the school with
"long" guns. Division Chief Whitman arrived and was briefed and maintained a position at the
Command Post. Deputy Chief Abrams arrived at the scene and was briefed.

Det. Arellano was ordered by Patrol one to take a position at leawood ave & Pierce and direct all
arriving SWAT team Officers where to join their units.

1240 MRS

Another briefing/meeting with the Jefferson County Command Post was held in their Mobile unit.
The decision was made to take students to Leawood Elementary as they were rescued. Obtain a list
of all names of students. Students were to be frisked as they escaped or rescued to ensure that the
suspects did not escape in the crowd,

Information was received that a natural gas leak was occurring in the school. A decision was made
to have Public Service shut off the gas as soon as it was safe to approach the main valve. A crew
from PSC was present and was notified to be ready to accompany officers.

Sgt. Marker was directed by Patrol One to Supervise the intersection of Bowles & Pierce St. due to
the number of Police writs arriving and the congestion. Officers were directed to move any Police
car that was blocking Pierce St. and to keep one lane open. Sgt. Jones assisted in moving Police
writs onto the grass adjacent to Pierce St.

1243 HRS

A report ofmore shots fired on the North side of the School,

1247 HRS

Patrol one ordered Det, Teiken to Fair & Marshall to assist with crowd control. Additional Officers
from Denver & Lakewood sent to assist with crowd control.

1250HRS

Call aired to all officers on all responding agencies to move their vehicles on Pierce 51. to allow
necessary emergency vehicles access to the School. Information from Jeff/Co that aNational Guard
armored vehicle would be arriving and needed additional room On Pierce St.

1257 HRS

Officer Creason was directed by Patrol one to assist Lt. Fink.

1258 HRS

Captain Gallagher requested to Command the outer perimeter.

1300 HRS

The Denver Police Department Bomb squad arrived at the scene and were assigned to team up with
the Jefferson County Bomb writ.

An FBI commander arrived at the scene and requested to be admitted to the Jeff/Co Mobile
Command Post. Reporting Detective brought the FBI commander in the trailer.

Captain Sandoval was notified that more Police radios and batteries were needed. Reporting
Detective contacted Dist, 4 and directed all extra Dist, 4 radios and batteries were to be sent t the
Command Post ASAP. Officer Lindel was assigned to transport.

Administrators from the School were brought the Command Post and debriefed by Jeff/Co.

Radio Room contacted Patrol one to notifY the Mobile command Post to tum on their FAX machine
and to have Det, Metzler to call the radio room and give them their mobile telephone numbers.

Patrol One directed reporting Detective to contact Jeff/Co Detectives and obtain the names of the
suspects and give them to 4 X-Ray 16.

Det. Kickbush of Jeff/Co and an unknown female Detective gave the following names of suspects:

The information was given to 4X-ray 16 as well as Police Officers from several of the Command Post
Mobile units.

1330 HRS

Lt. Lauracella approached the Command Post with information. The Lieutenant gave the name and
phone number of the girlfriend of suspect Eric Harris.

Jessica Hughes 973-3080

Patrol One and Chief Whitman instructed reporting Detective to give the information to the ather
Command Posts. All interested Police & Sheriff's were notified.

A man approached the Command Post with a cellular phone and he stated that he was in contact with
his son who was in the School and could hear the suspect firing their weapons and could pinpoint
their location. He was given to the Jeff/Co Commanders as well as the FBI.

1520 HRS

Patrol One requested 10 additional marked unit be dispatched to the scene.

1525 HRS

Received radio reports of more victims and more gunshots from the southwest area of the School.
A request for Paramedics and Ambulances was received in the Command Post. Patrol one directed
that reporting Detective notify the Jeff/Co & Littleton Paramedic Command Post. Det, Staskin
briefed the Littleton Fire Chief on the radio traffic and the request and numerous Paramedics were
dispatched.

Adam .3 (Chief Sanchez) contacted Patrol one and made the decision to cancel the request for 10
additional units.

Chief Sanchez arrived at the Command Post and was briefed by Chief Whitman.

15.30 HRS

A report came into the Command Post that SWAT teams were in the school and located two suspects
with self inflicted wounds.

A report came into the Command Post that 17 bodies bad been located in the Library of the School.

1540HRS

A report came into the Command Post that more shots were heard in the School. (later determined
to be a device used by Lakewood SWAT to blow a door)

1600 HRS

A report came into the Command Post that no other suspects were located and that the School
appeared to be secured.

Requests from Jeff/Co for the assistance of the Denver Police Crime Lab Units and Denver
Homicide.

1700 HRS

A number of the Police and Sheriff's Departments began to secure and leave the scene.

1815 HRS

Patrol One informed reporting Detective to secure and gave permission return to Dist, 4.

On 4-20-99 I was worlcing as Cruiser 140, the DistrictOneNPO supervisor. I responded to a call for additional
officers at the shooting at Columbine High School.

Upon arrival at the school areaI responded to Pierce Streetjust northof the school. My duties at the scene were
to help with the questioning ofthe studentsas they werebrought out of the school. I alsoassigned officers to the
ll1lIbulances at the location. I arrived at the scene at around 12:30PM. I was involved in handling the students
for several hours.

On 042099 at approximately 1430Hrs while assigned to the Vice Bureau, I responded to Columbine
High School alongwith Detectives Bolte, Berube and Henry. We covered Jefferson Countyon a
multiple shooting. Upon our arrival, we signed in and were given assignments to assist ambulances,
whichwere standing by to evacuate, wounded. We then went to a nearby elementary school to assist
with possible victims, which were gathering there. We then were released and responded to HQ's.

Tuffield and Det. Robert Miller. We were then instructed to go to
Leawood Elementary School with Capt. Gary Leuthauser (DPO i .
Arriving at Leawood Elementary I incerviewed witness to the
shooting/bombing by Question and Answer after first interviewing the
witness orally to determine what the witness had seen or had knowledge
of. All statements made on Denver Police Statement Form. I collected
statements from other oetectives and turned them over to Sgt. Ed
Tuffield.

LOCATION WHERE STATEMENT TAKEN: Headquarters

On 04-20-1999 we were working in the Sex Crimes Unit. We were sene


to assist with the shooting at Columbine High Scheel at about 1345 hrs
We responded to Pierce and Leawood, where we were directed CO Leawood
Elementary Schaol. We walked to Leawood, Elementarj and were contacted
by Capt. Saltzman. A schocl bus arrived with students who needed to
be i:lterv-iewed and we da xect.ed che bus to the side entrance to the gyrn..
We lea=ned that the gym was full of parents and we directed t he
student.s to th~ music room eo t.hat they couLd be Lrrt ez-vd ewed . A
Jefferson County Deputy t.o Ld ua that those whc had wltnessed the
shoot-ing O~ seen the shooters would be i.nt er-vdewed in the lib:::,ary. We
then began to contact. the students and the ones who had witnessed
an~h~~g were taken to the library. We found that some counsellors
were try~ng to sign out the students who did not see anything and we
asked them to get full information an the students. When the
interviews were complete we were eventually relieved from the
elementary school and we responded back to Leawood and ?ierce where we
ccntac~ed Depuey Chief Abrams and Division Chief Gordon to see i: we
were needed for anyth':'ng else. After we were released from that
location we returned to headquarters.

On Q4..20-99, at approximately 1245 hours, while working plainclothes with Officer J. Ave~, #94032, we
responded to assist with the scene at Columbine High School I remained at the command post at Bowles and
Pierce and was assigned to ride in West Metro Ambulance 1/132 on the condition that they were needed. The
ambulance was not dispatched and I remained at the site of staging until approximately 1630 hours, before
beingrelieved to return to Denver.
