Baby Connections will be the first of its kind beginning foundation for expecting parents. The company will help first time parents with basic parenting skills that will enable them to feel comfortable when bringing their bundle of joy home for the first time from the hospital. This is extremely important since hospital stays are shorter, couples are deciding to become parent’s later in life and preparing to take care of a tiny individual is a BIG responsibility. Baby Connections will come to the client’s home and explain how to select a pediatrician, daycare, nanny or babysitter. Teach proper hand washing techniques for infection control. Prepare for fire safety, car seat safety, poison control and how to baby proof your home. Parents will also learn how to pack the Ultimate Diaper bag and much more. Baby Connections is also available to accompany expecting parents to baby registration at store of choice. They can have their own person expert to help make selections and advise on different products when making these selections. Our customers will be first time expecting parents, existing parents who had a large gap between births. Our doors are also open to friends and family of expecting moms giving gifts to their family members. Baby Connections will be a great resource to every expecting family. The future holds great things for Baby Connections because the world is always growing. A new person enters this world about every two seconds. This leaves room for plenty of business opportunities and expansion for Baby Connections. II. General Company Description

It will teach parents; • What items are necessary for the baby room • • • • • • • • • • • Fire safety Poison control safety Child proofing the home Breast feeding/ bottle feeding Proper hand washing techniques Packing the Ultimate Baby Bag Pediatrician selection When to go with your gut feeling Diaper changing tips School selection Activity selection
Is it a growth industry? This is a growth industry because people have babies every year and the need for Baby connections Services will never go away. What changes do you foresee in the industry, short term and long term? The evolving changes and future of the world make it easy to access so much information on the internet. The changes I see in the short term, Baby Connections will change the way families view parenthood. Baby Connections will help ease anxiety some mothers feel when having their first child. It will be a success early on because it will be something new for the parents to try. In the long term people will try to copy what Baby connections is offering via the internet and make it seem like the things they offer on paper can replace the live professional hired through Baby Connections. However, by this time through word of mouth and the authentic compassion and services provided by Baby Connections the above will not pose a problem.
How will your company be poised to take advantage of them? Currently there is not company or service offering what Baby Connections has to offer. I do not plan to take this lightly. I will make sure the services are superior although there currently is nothing to compare the services too. Baby Connections has the opportunity to make the world love know and repeat the name to all family and friends. Describe your most important company strengths and competencies. Company strengths I am a pediatric RN and have firsthand knowledge on why the families need this service. I found through working as a pediatric nurse that mothers are not aware of how often to change a baby diaper which results in diaper rash, when to start the baby on baby food, when and how introduce a Sippy cup etc. With this information on hand I am equipped to build a business ready to supply the information new parents require to make it through those first years of parenthood. What factors will make the company succeed? It is the missing link currently not filled in the billion dollar baby industry. I have a great passion and concern for all children and want everyone to learn from the mistakes, lack of knowledge others parents made in order to change or correct behaviors in one’s own parenting skills. Baby Connections will succeed because I am determined to put all the energy and effort that I put into all the jobs I worked for throughout the years. I will put my passion, sweat and hard work into Baby Connections to make sure it works. I will not give up on Baby Connections. What do you think your major competitive strengths will be? The major competitive strengths will be; • I am a pediatric registered nurse- therefore I worked with newborns parents before, understand what is required and needed for the parents to get off to a great start with their newborn • • I trained customer service representatives in the past-this will help with my own training techniques when going out to present the information to new parents Currently my only competition is the internet, books and people researching on their own what to do and how to do it
What background experience, skills, and strengths do you personally bring to this new venture? I personally bring my training experience and my professional experience as a pediatric registered nurse. Although I will not be working in my nurse capacity, I will use the 6|Page
knowledge obtained while working as a nurse to help build Baby Connections into a major success. Legal form of Ownership Baby Connections LLC Why have you selected this form? I was advised to start with this type of corporation via an accountant. III. Products and Services
Through my training experience I have found that people learn and retain information in several different ways. Some people are visual learners, auditory or interactive. For the most part people can research everything that I am going to teach them online. I am expecting to touch those that still require the hands on training. Therefore for those interested I believe it is going to a valuable service. Features and Benefits Currently the two products I will be starting out with is the training of first time parents. Baby Connections will be training parents how to select a pediatrician, daycare, nanny, and/or a babysitter. Car seat safety, fire safety, poison control, proper hand washing techniques and how to pack a diaper bag for everyday use and emergency purposes. Also available to accompany them for Baby Registration. For each product or service • • Describe the most important features. What is special about it? The most important feature about Baby Connections is it will consist of one on one training. Baby Connections is unique where it will be the only company of its kind. Describe the benefits. This is what will the product do for the customer? There are many benefits the customer will receive. It is hands on training on how to gather all that is required and needed information when having a baby and it will make the parents more aware of what they should be doing and researching to improve the health and safety of their child.
What after-sale services will you give? Some examples are delivery, warranty, service contracts, support, follow-up, and refund policy. • Email access to ask any questions about the services provided or just allow them to ask any questions regarding their childcare. Although I will not be able to answer every question right away. Some questions I may have to steer
them to a different source. I want to be a resource and be able to point the families into the right direction with questions, I can’t answer. IV. Marketing Plan
Market research It was difficult to do research for this business because currently I could not find a single company or person offering this service. Plenty people have written books and magazines specializing in motherhood. You can read plenty of articles in regards to this issue but no one is doing live training. Therefore here is some general information on the industry in regards to how much mothers spend on magazines and other items regarding this industry. I know that billions of dollars are spent in the industry as a whole for all of the items; • Baby furniture’s • • Baby/mother magazines Baby clothes etc
Economics Facts about your industry: What is the total size of your market? • Millions of people What percentage share of the market will you have? (This is important only if you think you will be a major factor in the market) • The world will be my oyster because currently there is no one else offering a service like mine Current demand in target market. I have been testing the waters with family and friends, by providing free information in regards to tips on child rearing, informational tapes that are good for children and places to take your child for recreation. The feedback has been phenomenal this and my dreams of owning my own business prompted the launch of Baby Connections. Trends in target market Growth trends The growth potential is everlasting. People are always going to have babies and the rate of first time mothers will change and grow each and every year. Another part of the future for Baby Connections is going to be classes on how to deal with teenagers, young adults and much more. Statics show there are 133 million births each year. If I could just touch 10 percent of that number my business will be a success. Trends in Consumer Preferences 8|Page
First time mothers will always be willing to learn as much information as they can to do the best for their newborn. Therefore there will always be a need for the business. The need is going to be more demanding as the years go by because consumers are always demanding more for their money. Some of the consumer preferences will be for Baby Connections to expand more on the training to not just talk about what is required for the newborn but expand on what will be required throughout the years of their life. Trends in product development Once Baby Connections become a household name, it would put me in a better position to start the development of the products and get investors to buy into the business. As stated previously I would like to eventually have several products under the Baby Connections Name; • Cribs • • • • Strollers Clothes Bottles Car seats etc
Growth potential and opportunity for a business of your size The growth potential is endless. I plan to eventually become a training franchise. This will enable me to touch the world without having to travel all over the world. I could do the initial training for anyone who purchase the franchise and then provide all the material and marketing techniques. This would be a great startup business for caring people with a business mindset. What barriers to entry do you face in entering this market with your new company? Currently the biggest barrier is believing in myself. I have been dreaming about starting my own business for years and give myself many excuses. This year I decided to leave the anxiety, excuses and disbelief behind and just do it. High capital cost I am fortunate that my initial capital cost will not be high. I need the following items to start; ITEM LAPTOP EASEL STAND EASEL PAD FOLDERS 9|Page HAVE X DON’T HAVE X X X COST $700.00
BUSINESS CARDS WEBSITE LOGO Printer ADVERTISEMENT STAR LEDGER, CRAIG LIST, LOCAL PAPERS BLACK LIGHT CD PLAYER CD’S PENS PAPER T-SHIRT FOR BUSINESS ATTIRE LOGO FOR CAR PO BOX LLC PLUG INSERTS
X X X X X
X X X X X X X X X X $600.00 $29.99
High production costs Production will vary depending upon business and amount of clients booked. High marketing costs Marketing cost for weekly ad in the Star Ledger is $156.00 a week. And the rest of the newspapers are the same in comparable cost. I decided to advertise in NJ Family magazine for now. Costing $204.00 a month. Since the magazine stays in circulation for an entire month. I hoping this option will help people recognize the name. Consumer acceptance and brand recognition I believe the consumer is going to accept Baby Connections and it will eventually become a house hold name. This is an underserved area in regards to people receiving one on one training on how to go about caring for a child their first child. Training and skills I have a great advantage in this area because I am starting a business in a familiar field. I have trained in corporate America in the past and I been a pediatric nurse for the last few years. These two skills combined will help make Baby Connections a success. Unique technology and patents Currently I have no unique technology and/or patents. 10 | P a g e
Unions To start I will not have any union. In the initial stages of the business I will be the only one working the business. Shipping Costs This is a service based business. No shipping cost will be involved. The flat fee will be $500.00 per service and $250.00 per service. Tariff barriers and quotas None And of course, how will you overcome the barriers? I plan to work this business every moment that I breathe. I have worked for other all my life and been giving them my ideas for free. This year I decided to take all my ideas and energy and give it to myself and my business. I will overcome all barriers by never giving up and sticking to the plan and revising the plan when necessary. How could the following affect your company? Change in technology; It will not affect my company because currently everything I am going to teach can be found on line; I am offering one on one live training for first time parents. Change in government regulation; It will not affect my company Change in the economy; I am starting Baby Connections in a compromised economy. This is going to be very challenging for me. I have to work hard to make the company a success. This time period could help me learn how to really work hard for customers and maintain and gain a strong reputation in the community. Change in your industry; First time parents will always need the help of an educator. Therefore I feel there will always be a need for the services that I am providing. Customers Identify your targeted customers, their characteristics, and their geographic locations otherwise known as their demographics. Characteristics
11 | P a g e
The characteristics of the customers will be first time parents, and parents who have a huge gap between children. The age range can be from the very young parents to late booming parents. Geographic Locations I am going to target families in the New Jersey, New York and Philadelphia area. Eventually training and certifying more representatives to train in other areas outside of the ones mentioned above. Age The age of the customers will range from the very young to older couples. My training is not age based it is based on time in which families decide to have children. However, in I base it on the child rearing age; I would have to base the age on 18-45. Gender The training is for males and females. It is geared towards all individuals providing care to babies. Location All training will take place in the comfort of the families’ home. Eventually with plans to open a training center located in Middlesex County New Jersey. Income Level I plan to work with low income to high income individuals. I found that people always find money to pay for the things they really want. I want people to want the service and plan to charge a flat rate of $500.00. This rate is not going to be negotiated per person are individual. For those who can not afford the service, I will direct them to the internet to research the information for themselves. Social Class and Occupation I do not plan to gear my services towards a certain social class or occupation. However as a result of the service provided and the marketing plan it will draw in a certain social class of people. I plan to advertise in the Star Ledger and eventually more on to parent’s magazine and newsletters and publications geared towards families. This in and of itself will draw in a certain group of people. Education The education level is not going to play a major role in this training. It is training at the basic level and will not require much thinking but a lot of action. Even if you do not 12 | P a g e
have a high school diploma but can understand and process the importance of what is being taught, it will be beneficial information. Competition What products and companies will compete with you? Currently I could not find any direct competition. However, all information Baby Connections will provide can be found out online, in newspaper articles, magazines and through families and friends. Now Write a Short paragraph stating your competitive advantages and disadvantages. Advantage- Baby Connections has the advantage of creating a new way of preparing first time parents interactive training before anyone else ventures into the field. It will give Baby Connections time to feel it way through the arena and determine the best practices through trial and error. Announcing Baby Connections name out to the world to hold seminars in the local Babies R US, Toys R US, private baby stores and hospitals. Disadvantage- It is going to take hard work to get people to know and understand the benefit of Baby Connections. I will have to work hard especially in today’s economy. However, I am willing to do the work in order to reap the benefits in the long run. Most people lose faith during this process because sometimes it takes a long time for people to catch on to your business. I plan to hold on, press on, until people catch on. Niche My niche is that Baby Connections will be the only company offering this type of training. Along with that I have trained in corporate America in the past and have been a pediatric nurse with an understanding of what first time families need to feel less overwhelmed with the beginning process of raising a family. Strategy My marketing strategy is to advertise in the Star Ledger initially and eventually work my way up to advertising in Parents Magazine and other publications who market towards families and children. Promotion How will you get the word out to customers? I am going to have a launch party in my home inviting family and friends asking them to help spread the word at their current daycares, schools and to family and friends. As will as advertising in local newspapers. 13 | P a g e
Advertising: What Media, why, and how often? I will initially advertise in the Star Ledger every week until customers catch on and business picks up. Why this mix and not some other? This is going to be the advertisement that I can afford upfront. Once advertising budget expands and business expands, so will the advertising budget and then I will move onto more family oriented publications. How you identified low-cost methods to get the most out of your promotional budget? I plan to go around to existing daycares, schools and baby furniture stores to see if I can advertise my brochure in their facilities. As will as the above advertising. Will you use methods other than paid advertising, such as trade shows, catalogs, dealer incentives, word of mouth (how will you stimulate it?), and network of friends or professionals? Although I work in the pediatric field, I am not part of many councils or pediatric organizations. I plan to expand my networking in these areas and trade shows for baby products. What image do you want to project? I want to project a baby friendly image that makes people and families happy when they think of Baby Connections. I want them to have a warm fuzzy feeling inside. How do you want customers to see you? I want Baby Connections to be seen as a resource for first time mothers and an option that they promote to families and friends. In addition to advertising, what plans do you have for graphic image support? This includes things like logo design, cards and letterhead, brochures, signage, and interior design (if customers come to your place of business). Logo Design- Logo done by an online design company and it cost $69.00 Business Cards- plan to use Staples Letterhead- plan to use staples and my own personal computer Brochures- staples
14 | P a g e
Signage- will not need until I open the actual training center Interior Design- will not have to worry until I open the actual training facility Should you have a system to identify repeat customers and then systematically contact them? The only time a parent would need to repeat services with me if they have another baby several years later and did not save or retain the information taught and once I add additional products and services then perhaps I will have a need for the program. Promotional Budget How much will you spend on the items listed above? Item Logo design Business cards Letter Head Brochures Signage Interior Design Pricing • • Baby Connections flat rate is going to be $500.00 for in home training $250.00 for Baby Registration Services. Cost $69.00 $50-100.00 $50-100.00 $50-100.00 $0.00 $0.00
Does your pricing strategy fit with what was revealed in your competitive analysis? I did not do a competitive analysis because I could not find a company providing the same service. Compare your prices with those of the competition. Are they higher, lower, the same? Why? Baby Connections priced is based on the services provided and gas and tolls to go directly to the families’ house and train. Also I believe that people always find the money to do what is important to them. How important is price as a competitive factor? Price important to any business because you need to make a profit in order to stay in business. After the first visit/sale I have to access service versus gas and tolls and adjust the price accordingly.
15 | P a g e
Do your intended customers really make their purchase decision mostly on price? I found that most people find money for the things they want. The service provided by Baby Connections is valuable and will pay for itself throughout thier Childs life. What will be your customer service and credit policies? Baby connections will not start off allowing people to charge for services but in the future they will be able to charge by credit card. Starting out they will have to mail a check for $100.00 appointment and rest of payment due on arrival for the appointment. Proposed Location Baby Connections will be a home based business. A website will be available for customers to check out for more information. www.mybabyconnections.com Is your location important to your customers? If yes, how? Yes- I think it will probably be important because the training will occur in the comfort of their home. Distribution Channels How do you sell your products or services? The services will be advertised on line and in newspapers. Sales Forecast Baby Connections plan to start with four customers a week and working up to having 365 customers in year one of business and doubling thereafter. V. Operational Plan
Explain the daily operation of the business, its location, equipment, people, processes, and surrounding environment. The daily operation of the business depends upon how many customers I book per day. Initially depending upon the location of customer I will only book one customer per day and as business grows and customer base grows I will book more customers per day and also consider hiring another representative to work along with me. Again the location is home based. Equipment required is going to be laptop eventually upgrading to a home computer and laptop. Along with my retired mother helping out here and there. As business grows, I will expand the operation. Production How and where are your products or services produced? Quality Control Quality Control will be done by Cheryl McPherson until the business grows and expands. Ten Questions to Help You See & Seize Your New Business Dream 1) The Ownership Question: Is My Dream Really My Dream? Finally my dream is really my dream. I went to college initially thinking I would finish and get a good job in Corporate America. After obtaining the job and working there for almost 10 years, I finally got the courage to leave and start another job. This just allowed me to start the same process all over again. Still not fulfilled and truly happy, I decided to pursue the heart. Start my own business and take a chance on me. This allowed me to work my way towards Baby Connections. I started several other ventures in between. However, Baby Connections is the first company where the passion would not allow me to quit. All other ventures were buried before the birth. Baby Connections was born and I am determined to see it all the way through. 2) The Clarity Question: Do I Clearly See My Dream I clearly see my dream. It’s vivid, I have a vision board. I sleep, eat and breathe it all day long. My friends call me The Baby Lady and they are helping me spread the word about Baby Connections. I am fortunate to have the time and mind set at this point in my life to start and grow a business. I see myself in the local Babies R Us giving my expert advice to expecting families. I look forward to speaking at different hospitals at a conference for first time mothers. In the future I plan to write books and create products all geared towards the baby industry. 3) The Reality Question: Am I depending on Factors within My Control to Achieve My Dream? I am creating the flyers for my business and plan to go around to the different supermarkets and daycares to promote my services. I work on some aspect of my business every waking moment. I also try to read success stories about any industry every week. These stories encourage me to stay strong, stick to the task and NEVER give up. 20 | P a g e
4) The Passion Question: Does My Dream compel Me to Follow It? Yes my dream compels me to follow it. Every day, I get different questions from people asking how are you going to achieve your goal. I don’t have all the answers. However, I believe and after listening to the Secret and reading the book I believe most people who started a business did not know what and how to every question, but they believed and achieved. 5) The pathway Question: Do I have a Strategy to Reach My Dream? I have a strategy in place. I plan to write all the Planned Parenthoods in New Jersey, different women and child groups, all the stores that cater to babies and different hospitals and OB, GYN doctors groups. I figure for every four people that might say no there is going to be one person with a yes. All I need is one yes every now and then to help launch my start. 6) The People Question: Have I Included the People I Need to Realize My Dream? Who is currently on your team? My friends and family are my main team members. I also use SCORE a lot. By meeting with advisors in person and also attending the classes they have to offer. Since I have not networked outside my circle, I currently do not know anyone owns their own business. As a result, I have been venturing out more and trying to join different groups to expand my contact base. What impact do they have on you? I cherish the advice that everyone gives me. At the end I compile all information and advice to make a good decision. I have to own my decisions and make sure I am happy with choices made. Fortunately, I been surrounded by great people and their advice is truthful and helpful. I have had some people who don’t feel like I should go into business for myself, especially in this economy. This is when I pack that information on the side and read one of my success stories again. This helps me press on and continue with my dream. 7) The Cost Question: Am I willing to Pay the Price for My Dream? In my life I have attracted some people who love being my friend because of my current level. The level of me being stuck where I am at, complaining that life is hard and other’s are so lucky because they have a certain talent are achieved their dreams. I learned to start a turnaround in my life because of the book The Secret. I don’t complain as much anymore. I am grateful everyday for life and all of its opportunities and I am learning to really change my mind set about a lot of things. 21 | P a g e
As a result, I am losing some friends because they do not see the same Cheryl. I am also gaining new friends who are more positive and seeking to open their own business. I am willing to give up the old friends who are not willing to see me grow and evolve, start my own business and become The Baby Lady. 8) The Tenacity Question: Am I Moving Closer to My Dream? I am moving closer to my dream. Every day I receive some information via email, friend or co-worker that helps me advertise or get the word out about my business. This contest is giving me yet another opportunity to increase chances of my business expanding 9) The Fulfillment Questions: Does Working toward My Dream Bring Satisfaction? Working towards my Dream brings plenty of satisfaction. Because I am not just day dreaming about it, I am taking actions and steps towards making my dreams come true. It fulfilling and telling a lot of people about it helps me stick to the course because they ask me questions when they see me. I am excited and thrilled to hand out my business card. Living in the gap is comforting because I try to pretend everyday that I am already there. I sign all of my emails as The Baby Lady. I want others to always think of my as the Baby Lady. I am not too idealistic, I don’t allow myself to get discouraged and my vision board helps me keep the dream ALIVE. I appreciate the small steps forward but can’t wait to get to the finish line. I am ready to enjoy the benefits of owning my own business and the joy I am going to feel from mission accomplished. My personal discovery is I have to constantly tell myself you can do it. I based my career prior waiting for people to tell me, I can, you did well, and you’re promoted. This time I am going to tell myself. 10) The Significance Question: Does My Dream Benefit Others? Baby Connections will benefit others. I feel Baby Connections is going to help change the way families interact and people interact with each other. I want families to talk to each other.

Tell your neighbor who’s having a baby, the best daycare, doctor, school and activities are for their newborn. This will enable people to start trusting each other again. Trust amongst neighbors is so important. I have been bringing my sons old clothes in good condition to work for coworkers to take and pass along to others. I recently went to a funeral for a coworkers grandmother. One of her cousins was so excited to meet me just to say thank you. She stated she did not have to buy her son one pair of jeans last year because of my donations. If everyone could share a pair of jeans, sweater, information we could change a life one day at a time. The above is the Baby Connections Business Plan. This is my first time creating and starting a business. I hope you enjoyed the Business Plan and see the vision that is in my mind in regards to Baby Connections. Thanks Cheryl McPherson 92B Commerce Street Perth Amboy NJ 08861 732-742-4106
