3 of the September 11 tapes. This is position 14B tape
4 1, part 1. Start time, 12:15 Zulu.
5 MALE SPEAKER 1: American 11, American 11,
6 is a 757 departed Boston, going to LAX. We don't
7 know where the aircraft is going. It's supposedly
8 going to LAX, so it's going westbound. We lost its
9 frequency, then we lost its transponder, and now the
10 aircraft is just west of Albany heading eastbound.
11 MALE SPEAKER 2: Oh my goodness. Do we --
12 do we have the data box on this? Who's got the --
13 MALE SPEAKER 1: Yeah. We think there's a
14 primary target presently and it's heading
15 southwestbound.
16 MALE SPEAKER 2: Okay. Understand. I'll
17 advise the area.
18 MALE SPEAKER 1: Last altitude observed
19 was 290.
20 MALE SPEAKER 2: 29. Southbound?
21 MALE SPEAKER 1: Heading southwestbound,
22 like towards Hancock, right around there. He's
23 southwest of Albany by 15 miles.
24 MALE SPEAKER 3: And we have no idea where
25 he's going?

14 MALE SPEAKER 4: And a transponder. And
15 there's also -- they're tracking a primary target at
16 this point. It was last known at flight level 290,
17 and it appears to have turned southbound westbound,
18 and also there was some mention of some sort of a
19 threat being made --
20 MALE SPEAKER 5: He made?

2 MALE SPEAKER 18: They're all being
3 diverted as far as I know. They will be taken over
4 to Canada and moved to Canada.
5 MALE SPEAKER 7: Okay, great. Thank you.
6 MALE SPEAKER 18: Bye.
7 UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Cleveland, what's the
8 status of Pittsburgh right now?
9 MALE SPEAKER 10: Okay, they are back in
10 their tower, and they are pulling aircraft in to land
11 them. There were some holding. We'll get you a
12 count here of how many we have remaining to go in, if
13 you want to hold on, please. Okay, Pittsburgh is
14 back in the tower. They've taken all the aircraft
15 from us. They still have about four in their
16 airspace on final waiting plan.
17 UNIDENTIFIED MALE: They're no longer
18 ATCs. Got it.
19 MALE SPEAKER 10: Correct.
20 UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Okay. We're -- we're
21 trying to garner a list of airplanes -- of aircraft
22 -- airports that are available to be used. Shall we
23 include Pittsburgh in that usable airport category?
24 MALE SPEAKER 10: Do you want us to ask
25 them or -- I mean, as far as I'm concerned, yet, but

3 UNIDENTIFIED MALE: If they're taking
4 aircrafts, they're available.
5 MALE SPEAKER 10: Yeah, they're taking
6 them right now, yeah. I would include them. All
7 right. Delta 1989 is on the ground.
8 UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Okay. Thanks. Stay
9 with me please.
10 MALE SPEAKER 10: Okay. They're taxiing
11 him away from the -- away from the terminal to an
12 isolated area.
13 UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I was off for just a
14 second. What did you say?
15 MALE SPEAKER 10: They're taxiing the
16 Delta to an isolated area away from the terminal.
17 Okay, command center, heads up about Pittsburgh.
18 UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Go.
19 MALE SPEAKER 10: They say they are pretty
20 much saturated with aircraft. They said they could
21 probably handle about six more arrivals if they're
22 diverts that need to go in there, but other than that
23 they're at capacity, so I don't know how you want to
24 consider that as far as them being available, but
25 they probably cannot hold more than about six more

2 UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The number is six.
3 Stand by.
4 MALE SPEAKER 18: Command center, this is
5 Rob.
6 MALE SPEAKER 11: Hey, Rob, Boston center
7 here. I got a question for you. I know there was a
8 guide earlier about law enforcement aircraft.
9 MALE SPEAKER 18: Yep.
10 MALE SPEAKER 11: We got three Omaha
11 aircraft that need to get -- they just got recalled
12 from Burlington, Vermont down to Jacksonville,
13 Florida. And we're holding them on the ground right
14 now but they want to know if we can let them go or
15 not, and we're just looking for guidance from you
16 guys.
17 MALE SPEAKER 18: All right. Three Omaha,
18 I need some call signs.
19 MALE SPEAKER 11: Omaha 58.
20 MALE SPEAKER 18: 58.
21 MALE SPEAKER 11: 79.
22 MALE SPEAKER 18: 79.
23 MALE SPEAKER 11: 85.
24 MALE SPEAKER 18: 85. And they are were?
25 MALE SPEAKER 11: To Navy Jacks NIP.

2 Jacks?
3 MALE SPEAKER 11: That's where they want
4 to get to. I told them to tell them that -- what you
5 guys said earlier, there's no guarantee they're going
6 to be able to get there once they get airborne.
7 MALE SPEAKER 18: I have to get -- yeah.
8 Where are they located now?
9 MALE SPEAKER 11: They're in Burlington,
10 Vermont right now, but I don't think they're even in
11 the plane yet, but they just came to the door saying,
12 look, we got recalled, we got to go.
13 MALE SPEAKER 18: Tell them to hold on and
14 I'll get back with you.
15 MALE SPEAKER 11: Okay. Bye.
16 MALE SPEAKER 18: Okay.
17 UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Hey, Cleveland?
18 MALE SPEAKER 10: Yeah.
19 UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I questioned
20 Pittsburgh, but they have quite a few runways that
21 they could use to park (inaudible), right? Are they
22 considering that option as well?
23 MALE SPEAKER 10: I knew -- I did not know
24 that, but I will get back to you on that. I just --
25 they just -- they called us unsolicited and gave us

4 UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Okay.
5 MALE SPEAKER 10: I don't know how many
6 that would add up to.
7 UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Hey, Cleveland?
8 MALE SPEAKER 10: Yeah.
9 UNIDENTIFIED MALE: At Pittsburgh, when
10 you talk to them, let them know that we need them to
11 use the runways for parking and not to deny any
12 diverts if at all possible. So whatever he can do to
13 accommodate whoever needs to get in there, we need to
14 use his runways.
15 MALE SPEAKER 10: All right. We'll pass
16 that along.
17 UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Thank you.
18 UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Cleveland?
19 MALE SPEAKER 10: Just let me pass this
