The pace setter
Hannu Mikkola taught the Rally quattro how to walk.
The Finn, who drove for Audi from 1980 to 1986, was considered a perfect gentleman – a calm, friendly father who lived a healthy and active life. Mikkola, who was born in the city of Joensuu in 1942, was the most successful Rally driver of his era, posting 18 wins. He performed valuable development work for Audi during the initial phase of the World Championship project. In 1983 he and his Swedish co-pilot, Arne Hertz, won the drivers’ title in the Rally quattro.
