NEXUS—The next Generation of Reservoir Simulation

From time to time the Reservoir Engineer needs to work on multiple reservoirs. You need to spend lots of time to perform the reservoir planning. Landmark together with BP has developed powerful software to solve this problem called Nexus. It is a Powerful Next Generation Reservoir Simulation tools that can help your company maximize the revenue potential of existing hydrocarbon reservoirs.

It contains a complete range of feature that lets you build and initialize single or multireservoir model, run timedependent simulations, design the surface pipeline network, capture the results as a series of output files, and view the results as reports, 2D plots, or 3D inter

active diagrams. Nexus offers great advantage for Reservoir Engineers when dealing with Reservoir Simulation as it covers tremendous TIME SAVINGS from days to hours only. Average 5 times faster, up to 20 times faster than existing simulators, Nexus simulates simple and complex reservoirs at unprecedented speed with no tuning required.

In Production forecasts the Nexus approach utilizes a tightly coupled network model which allows the surface and subsurface model to be solved in tandem resulting in a solution that is not only faster, but also more accurate. This is opposed to traditional approaches that solve the sur

face and subsurface networks separately and require many iterations and much time to yield an acceptable result.

Nexus’s PowerGrid module introduces intelligent gridding, upscaling, and downscaling workflows to create a reservoir friendly model while honouring geologic features where necessary. Innovative methods allow user to intelligently combine layers with similar properties and perform local grid refinements around wellbores, faults, and channels to achieve more accurate fluid flow prediction.

Additionally, if you have multiple reservoirs tying to one common surface facil

ity, Nexus will simulate the entire asset as one simulation system for a more accurate representation of the full asset. Nexus simulates multiple reservoirs, allowing different physics and formulations to be coupled seamlessly. Multiple reservoirs tied to common surface network are solved rapidly as one single simulation system.

One of the key reasons for performing reservoir simulation is to understand potential reserves in order to design your facilities. Facilities modeling within an integrated environment are often lacking from reservoir management workflows. Users are forced to loosely couple the surface design with subsurface to estimate reservoir productivity. Nexus solves the surface

design with the subsurface equations simultaneously

Platforms: Windows® XP® Professional, SP 2, Red Hat® Enterprise Linux Workstation 3.0, U7 (32 and 64 bit).

why they were made. It gives them a level of confidence in what the previous interpreter actually did, and whether they need to redo any of that work. The interpretation of a horizon is intrinsically linked to the seismic that was used in the interpretation, thus the expansion of the R5000 data model to include seismic data ties in directly to the horizon interpretation history. Seismic processing histories are also now automatically captured providing the user with an audit trail of data history and lineage information tracking from the initial load of the seismic all the way through its processing and its final interpretation. The horizon & seismic histories are displayed in an easy to read graphical process diagram that shows exactly who did what & when, and even the individual steps & parameters used in any processing jobs. All of this helps minimize one of the critical problems in today’s interpretation process, the reproduction of work.

Horizon & Seismic Versioning: The horizon & seismic data models have been expanded to include new metatags such as Versioning & Attribute which gives you much more flexibility over how you manage your data. The same horizon that has been processed can now

keep its original name whilst updating the version (or attribute). Uses include tracking a horizon from its original seed, to an autotracked output, to a final amplitude extraction. Other uses include a more coherent way of managing overlying thrusted horizons. Similar to horizons, you can now have multiple seismic files with the same name but different Version & Attributes. Many of these Versions & Attributes are automatically updated by various applications & processes run within the R5000 environment. The Versions & Attributes are also tightly tied into the Processing History Tracking. They are also customizable so you can set your own Version & Attributes based on the processes or policies you have in place for your company. Have your business decisions drive how the software works, not the other way around.

Synthetic History: Knowledge capture has also been extended to synthetic generation within Well Seismic Fusion giving you the complete list of Time Depth Curve, Sonic, Density, and even the Wavelet used in generating a synthetic. Again this gives the new user critical information about the history of a synthetic allowing the user to de

Landmark Indonesia Newsletter A Note from Landmark Indonesia Country Manager, Rich Sanders Richard Sanders, Landmark Indonesia

termine whether new work needs to be done & leaving an audit trail for the future.

Interpretation Sets:

Within projects it is a data management nightmare trying to determine which horizons & faults belong to which formation, play or scenario. Using Interpretation Sets users can now group collections of data together into interpretation scenarios. These sets can be used multiple of ways including:

Smoothly handing off a project to a new user with all the appropriate knowledge in place. Collate data within a project that delineates different formations and plays. Quickly look at & assess different interpretation scenarios around a play. Monitor the progress of a project. Interpretation Sets are a lot more sophisticated and flexible way of managing those scenarios than using session files and allow you to track all of the data that went into producing a model.

Interpreter’s Notes & Document Management:

These allow you to literally add “stickynotes” at any data point in the interpretation process recording any thought proc

esses & decisions that went into any “Decision Point”. These Notes can be attached to any map or section in your interpretation. Critically you can also attach documents to these notes. A lot of work is done outside the project in meetings etc & the notes, reports, & presentations from those events are usually stored somewhere separate from the project itself. Most companies do not have a structured document management system, and if they do it is usually disconnected from the project data, & thus critical work is frequently lost. By being able to attach this unstructured data to your interpretation project you can guarantee that critical work is never lost.

Complete 2D Seismic Interpretation in GeoProbe:

GeoProbe now directly accesses traditional SeisWorks/PowerView 2D lines without any need to convert data or load new data. Within GeoProbe you can now interpret both horizons & faults across multiple 3D surveys & 2D lines. These horizons and faults are stored in OpenWorks & are accessible to other R5000 applications. The horizons can also be quickly gridded and converted into TSurf

Grids. GeoProbe also allows you to shift single or multiple 2D lines for balancing. Being able to see your 2D lines in 3D space is a very powerful way to more accurately balance your 2D survey. Previous GeoProbe innovations such as ComboMambo are also available on 2D lines in R5000.

Wiggle Trace: Interpreters can now interpret their seismic data in the 3D world in exactly the same way as they would in a traditional inline/xline workflow by displaying their seismic as wiggle trace; either on its own or over a variable density display. A host of important information is hidden in the detail of the wiggle trace that has until now been unavailable in the 3D world. New blending technology also allows multiple volumes to be blended together (e.g. amplitude & impedance) to aid in the interpretation process.

PowerCalculator with Grids & 2D horizons: The expansion of PowerCalculator to work with grids & 2D horizon data as well as 3D horizons capitalizes on GeoProbe’s new 2D workflows. PowerCalculator is an extensible, programmable, geoscience calcu

lator where you can input your favorite equations, save them, and use them again & again. Complex grid calculations covering multiple 3D surveys & 2D lines can be built & shared with your asset team. Multiple runs can be set up & run at one time to quickly visualize different scenarios.

Data on Demand (Dod):

Dod disc caching technology allows huge seismic volumes to be interpreted in GeoProbe without huge workstation memory being necessary (you can work with volumes orders of magnitude larger than your available memory). Unique in the marketplace, GeoProbe truly enables basinscale to prospectscale interpretation in one application.

Summary

Regardless of whether you are a Geologist, Geophysicist, Drilling or Production Engineer, IT professional or data manager, using OpenWorks R5000 software improves data accuracy, streamlines workflows, reduces workflowduplication and reduces the need to manually conduct audit trails. It is the only viable nextgeneration datamanagement solution available today that is open in its architecture and matched with a comprehensive suite of applications covering geological and geophysical interpretation, well planning/ engineering, production operations and economics.

GeoAnomaly, An enhanced workflow for automated body detection, an interpretation work with just one click

During the last IAGI Convention 2008 in Bandung, Landmark Halliburton Indonesia had a booth supported by Dell, where we show GeoProbe, one of Landmark’s finest software technology. GeoProbe is the industry’s leading volume visualization and interpretation software that renders 3D seismic data more accurately and with greater speed and versatility. Unlike applications where 3D data is displayed and interpreted in 2D segments, GeoProbe allows you to use the power of voxel technology for true threedimensional interpretation.

Many companies have been using this software for interpretation job however during this event some of the users who visited Land

mark’s booth were found to be not aware about one of it’s feature called GeoAnomalies. GeoAnomalies is a interpretation feature within GeoProbe that provides an enhanced workflow for automated body detection, as well as efficient anomaly tools. In addition, GeoAnomalies use advanced wrapping and graphical techniques to enhance visualization performance when dealing with large anomaly groups.
