May 14, 2013

Dear Chairman Barbar:

Office of the President

It is with a heavy heart that I am resigning as President of Florida Atlantic University and returning to a

faculty position at the University. In accordance with sections 13.2 and 13.3 of my employment

agreement, this letter serves as ninety days' notice of my resignation.

I care deeply about this

University and want what is best for its students, faculty, staff and the surrounding community.

I'll

always cherish my experiences with so many who have been tremendously supportive throughout my

presidency.

I am proud of the accomplishments of FAU under my leadership including: a new focused strategic plan,

a perfect score on the 10-year SACS reaffirmation;

significant philanthropic donations;

opening of the Charles E. Schmidt Medical School;

increases in research funding; and the construction of many

University facilities, including the FAU Stadium, new residence halls and classroom/research facilities.

We have become the most selective university in the system under my leadership and applications to the University have more than doubled. I have attracted an accomplished leadership team with national

reputations for excellence. Faculty and students have produced excellent and noteworthy research,

scholarship and creative activities.

I was honored to be recognized with Ultimate CEO and Business

Leader of the Year awards and am proud of my service on charitable, civic and national boards.

When I accepted the presidency of FAU three years ago, I did so with a vision to expand upon the excellence of this richly diverse and strong institution with a focus on academics and student success.

We, as a campus community, have successfully accomplished these goals.

There is no doubt the recent controversies have been significant and distracting to all members of the

University community.

The issues and the fiercely negative media coverage have forced me to reassess

my position as the President of FAU.

my family.

I must make choices that are the best for the University, me and

My hope is that in the future, news stories and public discussions about FAU will return to the accomplishments of our faculty, students and staff across all of our campuses.

I would like to extend a sincere thank you to my staff, colleagues, faculty, students, alumni, donors, business leaders and community members who have supported me and the University during my tenure

at Florida Atlantic University.

I know FAU will continue on its strong academic, campus development

and community engagement trajectory.
