What is in a Cigarette?

Tobacco smoke contains over 4000 chemicals, which are present as either gases or as tiny particles. Many are poisonous and over 50 are known to cause cancer. The three main components are:

Nicotine - the highly addictive drug which increases heart rate and blood pressure as well as affecting the mood and behavior of the smoker.

Carbon Monoxide - a poisonous gas which attaches itself to the red blood cells in the body, reducing the amount of oxygen carried in the bloodstream.

Tar - the sticky brown substance which stains fingers and teeth. About 70% of the tar in the smoke stays in the lungs. It is a mixture of many different irritants and cancer causing chemicals, including:

· Arsenic - a deadly poison used in

insecticides

· Benzene - used as a solvent in petrol

· Cyanide - a deadly poison used in gas

chambers

· Formaldehyde - used to preserve dead

bodies

· Toluene - used as a solvent in paint.
