The follo owing is an overview o of th he general direction I see e beginning to t unfold dur ring the coming year. The Joy y of the Lord d I see a general wor rk of the Sp pirit increasin ng in severa al main area as. The first is joy. Deut teronomy 8 declares: “Because “ yo ou did not serve s the Lo ord your God with joy a and a glad heart, h for 28:47-48 the abundance of o all thing gs; therefo ore you sh hall serve your enemies (or go into ge)...” One of f the primary y reasons wh hy Christians s fall to the yo okes of eithe er legalism or r license, bondag is the fa ailure to main ntain the joy of the Lord. The Lord is pouring out a special an nointing of jo oy to help deliver us u from our bondage. b Nehemia ah, after reb building the walls of Je erusalem an nd calling fo or a celebrat tion of the Feast of Taberna acles, decla ared “Do no ot be griev ved for th he joy of the Lord is your strength” (Nehem miah 8:10). The Feast of Tabernacles s was the la ast feast of the t Jewish c calendar yea ar. It was also call led The Fea ast of Ingath hering and was w a proph hetic type of the harves st that will m mark the end of this age. Nehemiah spok ke this just prior p to leadin ng the peopl le into a time e of heart wr renching rep pentance. o enter anoth her period of f deep repen ntance. There is a great and superna atural joy We too are about to s thr roughout the e church whic ch is both a sign and an n impartation from the Lo ord. If we that is spreading lose the e joy of the Lord L during the t repentan nce we will distort d this work w and fall into the bondage of legalism m. The church h must maintain the strength of His joy if we are going to acc complish our r last day mandate e. We mus st also understand that every e time th he Lord sow ws wheat the enemy sow ws tares “in the t same field.” There T will be e counterfeit t manifestations of joy because b the e enemy can n always fin nd weak, insecure e people to use u in an att tempt to disc credit what God G is doing. would be no counterfeit if there were not something real. The church desperately needs this impartation of joy in order to stay the course and to advance as she now must. Cell Groups The Cell Group movement was also initiated by the Holy Spirit and will continue as a main thrust of the church. This is a crucial strategy for preparing the church for the harvest. However, some extremes in the movement will begin to manifest with the potential to cause the shipwreck of many churches. Others will be tempted to react negatively to the whole movement and discard it. There is much more wisdom that we need concerning this strategy of the Lord, and He will give it to us as we grow. There are many facets to this strategy that have not yet been revealed. The downfall of any movement begins when it stops moving. Those in this movement who close their hearts and minds to more understanding of this strategy will eventually be stopped. That is how we can stop ourselves. The enemy also has a strategy for stopping this movement. For many he will try to make it just another program in the church, reducing its importance and effectiveness. Those that he cannot stop this way he will try to push too far, causing the extremes that the rest of the church will be tempted to react against. For these he will seek to have it take over the church, making compliance with the vision of the cell group movement a standard by which Christians judge others. As with every movement, we must guard against the presumption of Mary, who, because she gave birth to Jesus, thought that she had the right to control Him. The control spirit is seeking entry into this movement. Without grace, tolerance and patience, this movement will soon suffer a very serious derailment, which would be a serious blow to the preparation of the church for her last day ministry. Music—Anointing And Judgment Music is a spiritual force. Like “the force” in the Star Wars movies, it can be used for both good and evil. As witnessed during the 1960's and 70's, music can prophesy and propel major sociological shifts like the erosion of moral foundations. It can also fuel revivals and spiritual awakenings such as the great Salvation Army movement at the turn of the century. Music was created as a media for expressing our worship to God. Worship can be motivated by either adoration or fear, but all worship is basically a focus of our attention upon the object of worship. It is this power to focus men that has made music such a force in directing even civilization-wide changes. There is yet much for us to understand about this powerful force in the church and the world. The Lord is now moving in the hearts of His leaders to seek this understanding. If we do not learn to utilize music properly, the enemy will fill the vacuum and use it against us. The Lord is going to give us this understanding in preparation for a great outpouring of increased anointing on music. This anointing will propel the church to higher realms of worshipping Him, which will cause the entire church to more fully abide in Him. When the church enters into the higher realms of worship, the result will be a focus and a power that releases extraordinary spiritual advances. The Lord is going to use music to help take all of the light that we have been given and focus it like a laser. The more focused it is the more power it will have to cut through any barrier or darkness. The vision and strategies that the Lord is now giving His church will be put into songs that will help to grip and seal the hearts of the people with those visions. This will not be accomplished just with

52

catchy tunes or lyrics, but with a powerful anointing that will come from the heart of the Lord to grip the innermost being of His people. The Father is also going to share with those who are prepared to handle the power, the music from heaven that He loves. This music will grip all men’s hearts like no music that has ever been played before. This music will lift up those who have fallen to the low depths of self or idol worship, causing them to repent and turn their attention to the Lord. However, this power will not be trusted to those who are still in the snare of self or idol worship, which includes the worship of music. Deliverance fromself-centeredness and focus upon the Lord frees us to receive this anointing. This great anointing can be misused, which would only result in a greater depravity and corruption of soul. Major changes must be made in the way the church is now stewarding her music ministries before the Lord can give this greater anointing— for our own safety! The music ministry has become the music industry and the Lord wants it back! The present state of the Christian music industry is not the result of schemers with evil motives, but is largely the result of well meaning people, who have disregarded the warnings of the Lord and succumbed to worldly forces and pressures. Seeking to reach the world, they opened the door for the world to come flooding in. As the old proverb declares, “The ship in the sea is fine, but the sea in the ship is not!” The sea is now pouring in and this ship will soon go to the bottom—without a miracle. The Lord still does miracles, and His main business is redemption; but without major, sweeping repentance and change on the part of many involved in the Christian music industry, it will soon perish. Mammon has become a primary motivation in the Christian music industry, and we cannot serve God and mammon. With some this is greed; with others it is more insecurity and the lack of grace in handling “market forces.” The Lord begins judgment with His own house (I Peter 4:17), and He is about to release a James 5 judgment against the Christian music industry: Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries which are coming upon you. Your riches have rotted and your garments have become moth-eaten. Your gold and your silver have rusted; and their rust will be a witness against you and will consume your flesh like fire. It is in the last days that you have stored up your treasure! Behold, the pay of the laborers who mowed your fields, and which has been withheld by you, cries out against you; and the outcry of those who did the harvesting has reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. You have lived luxuriously on the earth and led a life of wanton pleasure; you have fattened your hearts in the day of slaughter (James 5:1-5). This judgment is partly the result of the laborers not receiving their worthy wages. The world’s system that was adopted by much of the Christian music industry robs those with the anointing, such as the songwriters, musicians and singers, so that they are propelled into lifestyles that utterly sap the anointing they were given. Because of this the entire church is robbed of the gift. The judgment has already begun as the “riches have rotted and your garments have become moth eaten.” First the resources for perpetuating the industry will not just dry up, they will become “rotten.” That is, they will come from evil, worldly sources. Because the Lord will remove His grace and anointing, even the most loyal Christian followers will begin to look at the whole of Christian music as a worn out garment that needs to be discarded. The music and the anointing that the Lord is about to share with those who can receive it does have unprecedented commercial value. With the present system it would be tragically prostituted, and He is not going to trust us with it until we get the process right. We cannot use the world’s system of

53

MorningStar Prophetic Bulletins - 1994

compensation for artists and others, but must seek the Lord’s ways, which will promote such equity, justice and grace that it will help to change the world’s system. The first step toward a repentance that will result in the Lord’s endorsement, is to return to our first love—worshipping Him. Because all music promotes worship in some form, if our hearts are not right we will misuse the power of this anointing. Our music must promote the worship of the Father, obedience to the Spirit, and the witness of Jesus. If the Christian music establishment does not repent, and return to its first love, its lamp stand will soon be removed and what light it now has will go out. When we do repent, we will find the greatest desire of our heart; peace, and even greater resources for the extravagant worship of the King. Children and Youth The Lord views every child given to a family or congregation as a most valuable “talent” that He has entrusted to them. The congregations who wisely devote themselves to the spiritual growth and care of the children will be blessed and prospered with greater anointing and resources; but those who do not will see even what they have given to others. Many of the most anointed of the last day ministries are children who already have the authority and power to make a difference in the churches who are open to let them take their proper places as members of the body. The Lord does not want us to make them like us; He wants to make us like them, so that we can fully enter His kingdom. Like Daniel’s friends Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, there is a generation of young spiritual leaders who will not eat the food offered to the idols of their generation, or bow down and worship them. They will also be confronted and tested by the conjurers, the sorcerers and wisemen of this age, but will be found to have ten times more wisdom than all of them. The Lord Himself will walk with them in the midst of the fire and they will not be burned. They will stand as a witness and turn many to the worship of the only God of heaven and earth, and cause some of the world’s most powerful leaders to worship Him. Like Daniel, every attack against them will only result in greater authority and esteem for them in the sight of all. China Communism is about to collapse in China. This is going to leave one of history’s greatest spiritual and cultural vacuums. The spiritual hunger will be so great that they will eat almost anything available. The sects and cults have been preparing for this and are already mobilized, but the church is tragically unprepared. A major emphasis of the Lord in His church for this coming year will be China. The Lord is now giving dreams, visions, and prophetic words to mobilize His church for this great opportunity. Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church about China. As Mahesh Chavda recently said, “The Lord has a special love for the Chinese— that’s why He made so many of them.” Let us bless the Lord by leading this great people to Him. The enemy’s strategy is to ignite a war between Russia and China to prevent the great revival in both of these nations. Pray for peace between these countries. As friends they will eventually become two of the strongest and most stable countries in the world. As enemies they will sow discord and death throughout the world. Pray for the Lord to raise up laborers for the great harvest in China. Be sensitive to the promptings of the Spirit as to how you can help.

Germany This is a year for increased mobilization of the church in Germany. Powerful new spiritual alliances will be initiated that will have a major impact on the work in Eastern Europe. Intercessory prayer teams will reach a new level of authority and effectiveness and must be seen as an integral part of every strategy and vision. The German church has been given seeds of reformation and revival to sow that will bear much fruit, especially in Russia and the Baltics. More opposition will come but it is a sign of their authority. It is by the Lord’s stripes that we are healed, and their wounds will all result in greater authority for healing the wounds of the nations. New Zealand The Lord is about to give the church in New Zealand a special ministry to America that will help save her next generation. They cannot strive for it or presume, but love life and love the souls of the lost— then they will be at the right place at the right time to take action. Those with understanding in America will one day look to New Zealand and say, “We are in your debt.” As racial reconciliation proceeds in New Zealand, the church will prosper in all ways and spread good will over the earth. Her greatest enemy is apathy. Her greatest strength is zeal. Norway Norway has strong bones, and sits in a place of great vision and prophecy. She has no small place in the plans of the Lord, but she must cast down the new age spirits of the earth that exalt themselves there. As she takes the spiritual dominion that she has now been given the authority to take, the Lord will give her this sign—the weather over Scandinavia will change and the sun will replace her gloom. Russia Russia has a very difficult road ahead, with some tragic failures looming, but eventually the road will become smooth. God’s grace is extended toward Russia, and though she will at times totter on the brink of anarchy, she will not fall. The Lord has prepared great leaders to help her. Germany will become the special friend of Russia to help her stand. It is the destiny of Russia to precede the world in dealing with some of the problems that the whole world will face. Pray for wisdom from above to show them the way to build upon a foundation that cannot be shaken. When Russia is standing on solid ground she will be able to help pull many others out of the quicksand. The potential of the Russian soul is a great treasure. The greatest threat to Russia is not the resurrection of Communism, but the emergence of Fascism. Sweden The Lord will bless the efforts to bring down the walls and spiritual barriers in the church. Just as Barnabus had to go get Saul (Paul) before he could be fully released in his own ministry, the divided church in Sweden needs each other to fulfill their destiny. Saul was a hard and difficult man, but he would become Paul, and the Lord saw him as the apostle of grace who could be trusted with His most fruitful field. The increased economic and social earthquakes are opportunities for those with vision. Sweden will be a fortress for the cross, and a light that shines to the east, the west and the south.

South Africa I saw South Africa like a huge boiler. I saw the thermostat and pressure gauges and they were both well into the “danger” range, and climbing. I saw a relief valve called “the elections.” It was opened but only a tiny bit of steam came out, and the temperature and pressure continued to rise. I saw many large and small pipes running into this boiler. Some were called “the prosperity of the nations,” and others “the moral values of the nations.” I knew that if this boiler blew up, it would have some impact on every other nation. No man knew what to do to relieve the pressure and temperature. The Lord is their solution. We must pray for the spiritual and civil leadership of this nation. If they turn to the Lord He will help them, but they must do it fast, or one of history’s most appalling tragedies is eminent. A great spiritual awakening is in her destiny and will come to South Africa either way. The foundation for a great and godly nation will be laid in South Africa. With humility and repentance now it will come with the crown of godly wisdom. Otherwise it will come with the crown of the martyr. Turkey Turkey has a Christian foundation (the seven churches of Revelation were in modern Turkey), which they are about to rediscover. When this happens one of the great nations of the earth will be reborn. Istanbul is one of the most spiritually strategic cities in the world. There the Lord will begin to heal some of the greatest divisions between cultures and races. The United States Revival is coming to the heart of this country. Like the floods of 1993, men will try to contain it, but they will not be able to. Because we are so unprepared for what is coming, many will consider the outpouring to be judgment, which it will be for those who are not prepared. Revival is not coming to America after economic judgment—it is coming to help us aver/judgment. We are being weighed in the balance and revival is our last call. Even so, if judgment must come, there will not be an utter destruction of America. Our judgment will be to lose our leadership; our talents will be given to the nations that will bear fruit with them; and we will become the tail instead of the head. However, this will not be the Lord’s will, but our choice. His will is that this nation which is composed of those from every nation, would be a sign and a light until He comes. Pray for the safety of the president, and that his spiritual renewal will continue. He is being prepared for a “defining moment” in his presidency, such as Kennedy had with the Cuban missile crisis. His leadership during this time will cause even his political enemies to be thankful that he was our president. I saw Dan Quayle like a quail being shot by hunters. He kept getting shot, but he kept getting up and flying until he finally rose out of their range. He then changed into a magnificent eagle with great strength and vision. I saw the eagle continue to rise until he passed through a barrier called “the next century.”

Why March for Jesus?
MorningStar Prophetic Bulletin No. 8 (1994) Rick Joyner Unless otherwise indicated, all Scripture quotations are from The New American Standard Bible (NASB).

A Call Beyond Church Walls, A Call to Worship, A Call to Unity, A Call to Prayer. . . In Every Place. A Call Beyond Church Walls The gathering of the Church should be a provocative event. It should provoke questions, raise issues, challenge mindsets. The Church began on the Day of Pentecost as an event that demanded an explanation. Peter had to get up and explain the work of God in these ordinary people because people saw it and were asking questions. Since then, the church has become hidden away behind four walls, often answering questions no one is asking. The salt is trapped in the salt shaker, and the light is hidden under a bushel. When we have shown our face in public it has often been an angry face. We come out of hiding to confront some injustice or evil in our culture. In spite of our attempts to be kind, our message to the world has come across as “God loves you, but we are really mad!” Our marches and demonstrations get lost in the endless line of special interest groups who have occupied the same streets to promote their agenda, demand their rights, show their strength, criticize leaders, demand that people and powers bend their way. We get a definite response to our confrontation—usually anger, resentment, misunderstanding, or apathy—The same reactions you get when you try to confront someone without an underlying relationship of love and trust. There is a broadening gap between the church and unchurched people. Our relationship is a love/hate relationship that has become a frustrating standoff between those who need salvation and those who are trying to offer it. They don’t receive our message because they don’t believe we love them. They don’t believe in us because they don’t believe we love one another. They don’t trust us because they don’t trust our motives. We are perceived to be as sectarian, divisive, and selfserving as any other special interest group. We are not seen as loving and compassionate. We are not trusted. We do not even know those we are trying to confront. Somehow the world has taken on the perception that we are more interested in imposing our agenda than we are about loving and caring and serving. As our message of truth and lifestyle of righteousness becomes more and more a confrontation to the world in which we live, it becomes more and more important to work at building a relationship of love and trust so that our message can be received. Our relationship of love and compassion for our cities must be so firmly established that when we have a difficult and confrontational message to deliver, the hearers will know they are being loved, not condemned.

Even the body of Christ is divided on what our approach should be. Some react with a more militant and more aggressive response while others shrink back, embarrassed by the tactics of some of their brothers. Those who are on the front lines in turn feel abandoned by “apathetic Christians who won’t take a stand.” How can we come together in an approach that will unite the body of Christ, temper the activists with love and call the peacemakers out of the pews to take a stand? The March for Jesus is one way God has given us to begin to reach across the line. It gives us an opportunity to make our message real, relevant, and provocative. Wouldn’t it be refreshing for the world to see us loving one another? Wouldn’t it be refreshing for them to see a march where there is no agenda, no ax to grind, no point to argue, just ordinary people who love God, love one another, and love the city where they live? Wouldn’t it be good for them to see us just being who we are? Even better, wouldn’t it be good for us to do something that is not a show, not a publicity stunt, not a fundraiser, not a protest, not a campaign, just a sincere demonstration of our love for God and for one another? That is what March for Jesus is designed to be. A Call to Worship The Father is seeking worshippers. Worship pleases God. The kind of worship the Father is seeking can be summed up in two things, to love Him and to love one another. Jesus said this was the first and greatest commandment. March for Jesus gathers massive numbers of people in a procession of worship to express their love for God and one another, simply because it pleases our heavenly Father. There is no agenda but to joyfully and enthusiastically exalt the Lord Jesus Christ. This year the March for Jesus will circle the globe encompassing almost every nation of the world on the same day. It will be an offering of extravagant praise and extraordinary prayer, an event that will unite the body of Christ worldwide. Imagine the view from heaven as this procession unfolds in every time zone. People from every nation, joyfully proclaiming His name, tear-stained uplifted faces will unashamedly adore Him, little children waving handmade banners, former enemies walking arm and arm. Singing, dancing, shouting, weeping, happy because of who He is and what He has done. Only Jesus could inspire such a celebration. This must have been in God’s heart from the time man fell. Israel showed the way, Jesus made it possible, the good news has spread from Jerusalem to Judea and to the uttermost part of the earth. And now, people from every tribe, tongue, and nation, are redeemed back to God, reconciled to each other and are gathered together to worship Him. For 24 hours, continuous praise will ascend before the throne of God. Millions of people in nation after nation will offer themselves to Him and boldly testify of His great love before the eyes of the watching world. Multitudes of people for whom Jesus died will offer up an extravagant offering of praise. Isn’t this the ultimate end of all of our evangelism, teaching, preaching, and discipleship that the love of Jesus would penetrate the hearts of fallen mankind and that a response of worship would echo throughout eternity? All of this effort is not to put on another demonstration for an earthly audience, nor a publicity stunt to get us on the front page, nor a show of strength to reveal how many of us there really are. We are not even seeking another blessing for ourselves. We worship him publicly for the

58

MorningStar Prophetic Bulletins - 1994
http://www.morningstarministries.org

same reason we worship Him privately. It is simply because He is worthy. It is an event spent entirely on Jesus. He is worth it! The sinful woman understood this idea of extravagant worship when she poured out her expensive offering on Jesus’ feet. Some considered it a waste. Jesus acknowledged her gift as a fitting story to accompany the preaching of the gospel. Her act of worship, motivated by love, became a prophetic statement. It calls upon the best of our motivations to bring forth such an extravagant offering of praise without regard for self, expense, or worldly effect. In the process, we might actually find we have done something prophetic and created the aroma that should accompany the preaching of the gospel. A Call to Prayer One of the most loving and affectionate things we can do for people, for leaders, and even for whole cities is to pray for them. Not against them— for them . It creates a special bond between the people who pray and the people for whom they pray. Social programs, education, political solutions can be offered by any benevolent group, but the one thing the church has to offer that no other agency can offer is the power of prayer. Government alone cannot bring about the changes we long to see in our nation. Only God can turn the hearts of people from their sin. I Timothy 2:1-2 instructs us to pray for rulers and all those in authority. Our mayors, police captains, city council members, school board, etc. are under an incredible burden of difficult social problems. I wonder, do they feel undergirded with prayer support from the churches in the city? Or do we become another burden? This is not an hour for ordinary prayer; it is an hour for extraordinary prayer. It is time for united, concerted, effectual, fervent prayer of faith by all men, everywhere. A Call to Unity The church is united. We do not have to make unity happen. Unity happened when Jesus went to the cross and by his death and resurrection broke down every wall that separated us from God and from one another. There is only one faith, baptism, Lord and father of us all. March for Jesus is simply an opportunity to enter into a unity that already exists. Humanistic attempts at unity require the compromise of important distinctives to a point of finding the lowest common denominator. The March for Jesus calls the church to unity around the highest common denominator, the Lord Jesus Christ. As we exalt Him, we find ourselves in unity with each other. Often we find ourselves next to those to whom we have not yet been reconciled. Worship brings us to a point of humility and repentance so that reconciliation can heal broken relationships. Unity does not mean uniformity. Diversity enhances the celebration. The comment is common at a March for Jesus, “we are all so different, but we are part of the same family!” We all have to leave our comfort zone as we gather in the street. It becomes common ground, a neutral location to discover a new identity together. It is level ground rather than watching a few important personalities on a stage; every person is a participant on display as a testimony of God’s

59

MorningStar Prophetic Bulletins - 1994
http://www.morningstarministries.org

great grace and love. Going public challenges some of our hidden judgments, pride, and fears. We might actually be seen with some oddball member of the body of Christ. Some of them might not even be real Christians! How we need to pace these fears and lay down our concern for personal reputation and image. Jesus had no problem with the idea of losing his reputation in order to identify with people on the streets. His ministry was on the streets, where the people were. And they loved being around Him. In Every Place Malachi 1:11 says “For from the rising of the sun, even to its setting, My name will be great among the nations, and in every place incense is going to be offered to My name, and a grain offering that is pure; for My name will be great among the nations,” says the Lord of hosts. It is easy to be thrilled about the size of the marches. Thousands of people marching down main street for Jesus is very exciting. Some marches have been the largest event of any kind in the history of certain cities! But the significance of the Global March for Jesus is not in its size but in the idea of covering as much ground as possible on the same day to make sure that extravagant praise is offered to the Lord in every place. Our goals for the Global March for Jesus are not numerical—they are geographical. “From the rising of the sun to its setting the name of the Lord is to be praised” (Psalm 113:3) . On June 25, 1994 millions of Christians in every time zone on the earth will together proclaim that the name of the Lord is to be praised. We want to make sure that the inhabitants in every inhabitable part of the earth are giving glory to their maker in the place they inhabit: We believe that the promise that came to Joshua is for the body of Christ today. “Every place on which the sole of you foot treads, I have given it to you” (Joshua 1:3) . Even the smallest of marches is significant when you realize the importance of proclaiming His name in every place. Some leaders have been hesitant to march in their city because they are afraid that the turnout for the march will be small, and they don’t want the church to be embarrassed. Do not be fooled into thinking that the success of March for Jesus is based on numbers! Throughout history, God has always defeated massive armies with His smaller ones so that the glory goes to Him. Make sure your city is marching on June 25, 1994. Gather a small army or a large one, but make sure your patch of earth is giving glory to His name. Also, do what you can to help us so that we can include every nation. “But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of Him in every place”. (II Corinthians 2:14)

Birth Pangs and Earthquakes
MorningStar Prophetic Bulletin No. 9 (1994) Rick Joyner Unless otherwise indicated, all Scripture quotations are from The New American Standard Bible (NASB).

For nation will arise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will also be famines. These things are merely the beginning of birth pangs. Mark 13:8 The barometer of spiritual intensity in the church is rising around the world. We are now well into the early stages of a great spiritual advance. There is a wonderful anointing being poured out to mobilize the saints for the spreading of the gospel and the tearing down of strongholds. As walls and barriers between local congregations are being brought down, churches are being energized with fresh zeal for the Lord. This is not a vision, or a prophecy, but reported fact. Genuine tokens of revival are now breaking out around the world. Accompanying these spiritual birth pangs are earthquakes. The events that take place in the natural are often a reflection of what is taking place in the spiritual realm. Earthquakes are caused when the geological plates, which are the foundations of the earth’s crust, begin to shift and move in opposite directions. The very foundations of civilization are beginning to shift and move in opposite directions. The result of this will be increasing devastation. But we have a foundation that cannot be shaken. We will be able to withstand the devastation to the very degree that our lives are built on the kingdom of God. The stronger our foundation is in Christ, the better equipped we will be to help those in the world whose foundations are crumbling. Insurance companies define earthquakes as “acts of God,” and they are right. However, God does not act arbitrarily. The Los Angeles earthquake of January 1994, and the continuing aftershocks, are both signs and judgment. In one sense, they were the result of the church in Los Angeles coming into a degree of unity and praying for their city. A primary stronghold over Southern California is the spirit of seduction. Newsweek reported on the destruction of this quake and the following quote is from their list of those suffering major devastation: “The studios of virtually every major American producer and distributor of pornographic videos, an industry that happened to locate itself almost directly atop the fault zone.” It was no accident that the quake took place at 4:31 a.m. Though the Book of Acts is often referred to as “The Acts Of The Apostles” it is, in reality, a record of the Acts of God. Acts 4:31 reads: “And when they had prayed, the place where they had gathered together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak the word of God with boldness.” The Los Angeles quake taking place at 4:31 a.m. was meant to give greater boldness to the saints for preaching the word, especially the saints in Southern California. The Issue Is Power, Not Ratings

Southern California has been the seat of one of the most powerful spirits of seduction released in this century. A movie rated PG-13 coming out of Hollywood can have more power to seduce than some “R” or X-rated movies coming out of other places. For this reason we must depend on discernment, not ratings, when we determine what we will watch, or allow our children to watch. It is not the amount of skin that is shown; it is the spiritual power behind a movie that counts. The Lord can shut down all pornography around the world whenever He so chooses, but He will not do it without the church. He has commissioned us to be the light of the world and the salt of the earth. He is only waiting for us to come into harmony with His will before He moves. When He determines that it is time for judgment, He wants His church praying for it, just as Elijah did to get the attention of his nation. Effective prayer has touched the heart of God for Southern California and He responded with this earthquake as a sign, as well as a judgment. The Lord would always rather show mercy than judgment. Even though He has been showing great mercy to Southern California for this entire century, beginning with the Azuza Street Revival and continuing with the great movements and ministries He has based there, His strategy is now moving toward increasingly serious judgments. Earthquakes will continue in Southern California, bringing greater devastation. For as long as the church prays the Lord will not relent until there is repentance and change. Repentance and change can spare California. Without it, a major part of that state will be utterly destroyed. Either way, the heart of God has been touched concerning the spirit of seduction that emanates from Southern California and He will not let up until it is removed. Let us pray that the easier way—repentance—is taken. This is not the time for the church to abandon California, but to labor with even more boldness, which was the message of Acts 4:31. The move of the Holy Spirit over the next few years will be greater than any other witnessed in that state which has seen so much of the glory of God. Los Angeles really can become “the city of angels.” San Francisco and San Diego can become great beacons that shine all the way to Asia. Where sin abounds there is even more grace for those who carry the light. This is the time to be fervent and bold with the grace and the light. Spiritual Earthquakes Along with what is taking place in the natural realm, major spiritual earthquakes are about to take place in the church. Pressure has been building up at certain points in the foundations that have been laid, and they are about to shift, creating major shock waves. These shifts are going to upset the status quo and result in some serious “structural damage” to the visible church. But only that which can be shaken will be shaken. That which is properly lined up with the true foundations of the faith will not be damaged. When these great spiritual earthquakes are over, most of the church will be in much closer harmony with the Lord, and the church as a whole will be much more stable. We Are Ambassadors One point where a great shift is imminent is in the practical application of our ministry as ambassadors of the kingdom. When Paul said, “We are ambassadors for Christ” (II Corinthians 5:20), this was a statement so stunning that it must have shocked those who read it. In the days of the empire, the position of ambassador was highly esteemed. Because communication between the sending government and its ambassadors could take many months each way, only those who were considered to be the most loyal and single minded would be chosen for such a position, as they would sometimes be required to make major decisions in the name of their government.

62

MorningStar Prophetic Bulletins - 1994
http://www.morningstarministries.org

Even with the most trusted men in these positions, ambassadors would only be assigned to a country for two or three years before being brought back home. This was because they knew that after even a short time in the host country, there would be a tendency to take on some of the traits of that culture which could make them sympathetic to it. Upon this occurring, the ambassador might then be inclined to serve the interests of the host country more than those of his home. The apostle Paul said, “... and to the Jews I became as a Jew... (I Corinthians 9:20). There is a sense in which we must try to accommodate those to whom we have been sent so that we do not become unnecessarily offensive. However, almost universally, Christians, churches and even missionaries, have compromised their effectiveness for the kingdom of God because they have become too sympathetic to the spirit of the culture in which they live. We have been sent to represent the kingdom, and to be effective witnesses. This will often require that we move in an opposite spirit to the prevailing spirit of the nation in which we have been placed. The Power Of Difference One of the most devastating misconceptions to dilute the power of the church’s witness to the world is the belief that we can best reach those who are from our own background. If we come out of a business background, we feel called to reach businessmen. If we are called out of the drug culture, we feel that we can best reach those who we were the most like. This seems reasonable but is contrary to the Lord’s strategy, which is why He sent Peter to the Jews and Paul to the Gentiles. According to our prevailing philosophy of missions, He should have sent Paul to the Jews; certainly they could have better identified with the “Pharisee of Pharisees” than with Peter. And Peter, being a common fisherman, would have surely been more compatible with the Gentiles. But the Lord did not want them to fit in—He wanted them to stick out! Even more, He wanted them to be utterly dependent on the Holy Spirit for their witness. Both Peter and Paul were cast into roles that made them offenses to those to whom they were sent. There was only one way that either of them could accomplish their mission—they had to have the anointing! They were both thrust into utter dependency upon the Holy Spirit, and that is when the Holy Spirit is best able to do His work. We also see that when Peter left the place of his anointing and tried to go to the Gentiles by visiting Antioch, he got into such serious trouble that Paul had to publicly rebuke him because “... he stood condemned” (see Galatians 2:11-14). Likewise, when Paul tried to go to the Jews by visiting Jerusalem, he was met with trouble. I submit to you that there was an easier way for Paul to get to Rome. Many of our ministries stay in trouble because we do not stay in the place of our anointing, which is the only place where we will ever have true spiritual authority. Sphere Of Authority It is natural for us to feel more secure when we are with those that we are the most like, but this security is not the security of the Holy Spirit. Our flesh wars against the spirit, and if we try to appease the desires of our flesh for security we will be in conflict with the Holy Spirit. The realm where we have true spiritual authority will usually be in that place where we are cast in utter dependency upon the Holy Spirit, which will always make us insecure in our flesh. Paul recognized a sphere of authority that he had been given and would not presume to go beyond it (see II Corinthians 10:13-15). Just as a policeman in Charlotte does not have authority in Toronto, we must learn to stay within the realms to which we have been appointed if we are to be effective.

63

This principle does not just relate geographically, but spiritually as well. Many prophets have fallen from grace because they tried to become teachers, just as many teachers have fallen from grace because they have tried to become prophets. Many evangelists have fallen because they tried to become pastors, and vice versa. This does not negate the fact that some have dual, or even multiple callings, but we must never presume to go beyond the sphere to which we have clearly been called. When we try too hard to be like those to whom we are sent, we are compromising our position of spiritual authority; which often requires us to move in a spirit opposite that which prevails in the land. This does not mean that we should purpose to be different in everything. Our authority is not in being different, but in the Holy Spirit. We simply will be different if we abide in Him and are true to the work He is doing in us. As the Lord Jesus stated it: You are those who justify yourselves in the sight of men, but God knows your hearts; for that which is highly esteemed among men is detestable in the sight of God(Luke 16:15). If we are compelled to act in a way that will make us acceptable to men we will be doing what is detestable to God. The reverse is also true; the things that are highly esteemed with God are detestable in the sight of men. Somebody is going to detest what we are doing. Who do we want it to be? The church in general, and even many missionaries, have embraced “the spirit of the land” to the degree that we cannot properly represent the Lord and His kingdom. The Holy Spirit is bringing conviction upon the church in this area, and many are repenting. Those who, through repentance, change their direction in this will create opposition in the world, but they will regain the favor of God. Those who do not repent will have it easier for a short time, but they will ultimately fall. Repentance will cause us to depend on the Holy Spirit as we witness to men, instead of relying on artificial props and devices. The Fear Of God To properly represent the kingdom of God, we must fear God more than we fear men. One of the great biblical statements made that sums up what is required of a true ambassador was made by Elijah. In what appears to be his first public prophecy, made before the king of his nation, he declares: “As the Lord God of Israel lives, before Whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, except by my word” (I Kings 17:1). By this statement, Elijah was declaring to Ahab that he was not standing before him—he was just a king, merely a man. Elijah did not live his life before men, even the most prestigious of men, but before God. For the church to accomplish her mandate for this hour she will need the kind of authority that Elijah walked in and more. Before we can be trusted with this we must be delivered from the fear of man and live only in the pure and holy fear of God. To lead men into a true conversion we do not want them to feel comfortable with us and our message, but very uncomfortable! For true conversion, men must be convicted of their ways that are in contrast with God’s ways. Paul said, “If I were still trying to please men I would not be a bond-servant of Christ” (Galatians 1:10). Paul acknowledged that his flesh had been a trial to the Galatians (see Galatians 4:13-14). This required them to either be repelled by him, or to receive him as “an angel of God,” which they did. When men are attracted to the gospel because they are attracted to us, we should seriously wonder about both the state of our lives and the gospel we are preaching.

64

The Lord Jesus said, “How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another, and you do not seek the glory that is from the one and only God?” (John 5:44).The Greek word that is translated “glory” in this text is doxa, which could have been translated “recognition.” By this statement the Lord was declaring that we lose our faith when we seek glory or recognition from men. Faith comes from our focus upon, and our recognition of, who Jesus is. When we become more concerned with what men think of us than what God thinks of us we are falling from the faith. How much of what we are building and doing in our ministries is for the purpose of attracting people? It is not hard to attract multitudes of people through hype and manipulation. True spiritual success cannot be measured by how many people we attract, but by our ability to attract God. God does care about numbers—He desires to see all men saved. When we begin to build churches by being more concerned about what attracts God than what attracts people, we will end up attracting many more people than we do now. When Jesus is truly lifted up He will draw more people than our best programs. Moving In The Opposite Spirit The people who are drawn to Jesus will also come through a true conversion. Those who come to Jesus through true conversion will not be the “high in maintenance, low in fruitfulness” people who now fill many churches. Even though the Soviet Union may have broken up, the “meet my need” spirit of socialism continues to advance. This mentality now dominates many churches even more than it dominates society. These foundational pressures which have built up within the church are opposing the direction of the Lord for His church, and, as a result, a major spiritual earthquake is now looming. The Lord does want to meet people’s needs, and He is obviously the best at this, but He does not meet them in a way that only feeds our self-centeredness. The church in the West is almost completely unprepared for difficulties, and we are entering a time of great trouble. The Lord is going to build a church that actually thrives on opposition and trouble. His people will look at the greatest of difficulties just like Joshua and Caleb looked at the giants in the Promised Land, declaring that, “They will be bread for us!” (Numbers 14:9, NKJV) As the Lord establishes His foundation in the church, it will often be moving in a direction opposite the foundational movements in society, resulting in the greatest confrontation between the church and the social order since the beginning. The power behind the foundational movements in the church is the irresistible power of God, and the church will prevail. The resulting “earthquakes” will be devastating only to those who are building on the wrong foundation. Holiness Will Prevail Over Seduction The power of the church in California to overcome the powers of darkness will come from embracing the cross and walking in holiness before the Lord. Because of many legalistic extremes, and satanic strategy, “holiness” has become a repulsive word throughout much of the body of Christ, especially in California. This has caused many believers to succumb more to the spirit of the age than to the Spirit of Christ. Some have drifted into infidelity, licentiousness, or a lukewarmness that is tolerant of the gross darkness. We must acknowledge that this gross darkness has been released upon the land during our watch. The alarm must now be sounded, but we can hardly sound the alarm against the enemy if we are of one mind with the enemy. There is a call upon the church in California to recapture the essence of true holiness. There is a special anointing on the church in California for leadership. When this anointing is not used for the timely purposes of the Lord, it is diverted by the enemy and used to promote evil trends in both the

church and society (whatever is loosed in heaven is also loosed upon the earth). The ability of the church to fulfill her calling is dependent upon our attachment to the Holy Spirit, and He is first and foremost H O L Y! I was given Isaiah 52 in relation to this calling: Awake, awake! Put on your strength, O Zion; put on your beautiful garments O Jerusalem, the holy city! For the uncircumcised and the unclean shall no longer come to you. The strength of the church in California will be her purity and cleanliness of spirit. Those who join themselves to the church will be truly born again and circumcised of heart. Shake yourself from the dust. Rise up O Captive Jerusalem! Loose yourself from the chains around your neck, O captive daughter of Zion. Because Adam was made from the dust it often speaks of the flesh—the shakings are meant to awaken the church and move her to put off her carnal ways. It is now time to cast off the deeds of the flesh, the yokes that men have placed upon us, and take our stand with boldness. For thus says the Lord, “You were sold for nothing and you will be redeemed without money.” Money and other such resources will not be the source of our redemption or victory. We must cast off the financial considerations as primary motives in our decision making and submit to the Holy Spirit. For thus says the Lord God, “My people went down at the first into Egypt to reside there, then the Assyrian oppressed them without cause. The bondage of Israel came in two ways: she went down to Egypt voluntarily, and it resulted in bondage; she was allowed to be attacked by Assyria because she had fallen into apostasy (“without cause” means it did not have to happen). The present bondage of the church is likewise the result of having drifted into the ways of the world (Egypt), and in some cases, having fallen into apostasy by worshipping other gods such as prestige (typified by worship on the high places), money (golden calves), personalities (Asherah), manipulation (Baal), humanism (gods made by human hands), etc.. Almost every church has subtly fallen into the worship of the “other gods” to at least some degree, and we must remove them from our midst. “Now therefore, what do I have here,” declares the Lord, “seeing that My people have been taken away without cause?” Again the Lord declares, “Those who rule over them howl, and My name is continually blasphemed all day long. Therefore, My people shall know My name; therefore in that day I am the One who is speaking, “Here I am.” The Lord has taken notice of the heathen’s continual blasphemy against His name because of the condition of His church. Therefore, His people are about to know His authority (name). The Lord is speaking to His people now saying, “Here I am.” He does not want to remain distant; He wants to be found by His people. We can all be as close to Him as we desire. How lovely on the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who announces peace and brings good news of happiness, who announces salvation, and says to Zion, “Your God reigns!”

66

Mountains speak of governments or powers, and the church is about to impact them with the good news of the gospel (not politics). With this gospel will come peace, joy and salvation. With this the reign of God will begin to be proclaimed, and believed. Listen! Your watchmen lift up their voices, they shout together; for they will see eye to eye when the Lord restores Zion. Watchmen were one of the designations for prophets in the Old Testament. Here the Lord is promising the lifting up of prophetic voices. This lifting up is the result of the unity that they will come into (shouting together and seeing “eye to eye”). Break forth, shout joyfully together, you waste places of Jerusalem; for the Lord has comforted His people, He has redeemed Jerusalem. After the watchmen come into unity, the whole church will also come into unity and “shout together,” which implies the bringing forth of a common message. With this unity there will be great peace and comfort, regardless of the times. The Lord has bared His holy arm in the sight of all nations; that all the ends of the earth may see the salvation of our God. The “arm of the Lord” always speaks of His strength. It should be noted here that His arm is “holy.” There is a strength that will be revealed when His body begins to walk in holiness which will be revealed in the sight of all nations. This will also make His salvation clear to all nations. Depart, depart, go out from there, touch nothing unclean; go out from the midst of her, purify yourselves, you who carry the vessels of the Lord. This is another exhortation to maintain the holiness that befits the church of Jesus Christ. Repetition of this theme is meant to emphasize its critical importance. But you will not go out in haste, nor will you go as fugitives, for the Lord will go before you, and the God of Israel will be your rear guard. Regardless of troubles, or persecutions, believers will not go on the defensive and become fugitives, but, as the first verse declares, we must “Rise up!” The Lord will be the One who backs us up; He will be our Rear Guard. Behold, My Servant will prosper, He will be high and lifted up, and greatly exalted. During the time of the greatest trouble in the world, the breaking of the nations and almost universal poverty, the church will know prosperity, and the Lord Jesus will be greatly exalted. Just as many were astonished at you, My people, so His appearance was marred more than any man, and His form more than the sons of men. The historic humiliation of the church was allowed so that we can identify with the Lord in His humiliation. Like Him, the church is also destined for a great exaltation, but we must never forget that this comes by His grace.

67

Thus He will sprinkle many nations, Kings will shut their mouths on account of Him; for what had not been told them they will see, and what they had not heard they will understand. The Lord Jesus is about to touch all nations with the power of His blood. The coming exaltation of Jesus will be so great that even those who have not heard the gospel presented clearly will understand it. “Where sin increased, grace abounded all the more.” (Romans 5:20) , and during this coming time of great darkness, the glory of the Lord will shine brighter than ever. Rise Up The retreat of the church has reached its limit. Now the advance will begin, and it will gain momentum until the whole world takes notice. She will march resolutely to the field of battle. The ultimate conflict between light and darkness is now upon us. It is time to put on our strength, true holiness, as the arm of the Lord is about to be revealed. Even nature will quake and shudder as a witness that the foundations of heaven and earth are moving in opposite directions. But our God will prevail, and our victory is assured. This is the time to be bolder than we have ever been before. There is no turning back.

Confronting The Last Enemy
MorningStar Prophetic Bulletin No. 10 (1994) Rick Joyner Unless otherwise indicated, all Scripture quotations are from The New American Standard Bible (NASB).

When Peter made his great confession that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of the living God, the Lord promised: “... upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matthew 16:18 KJV). The gates of hell are the entrances through which the powers of darkness gain access to this world. They are strategic, usually planned as counterpoints to the important purposes of God. We are coming to the time when all of the gates of hell will be fully opened. It is imperative that we be able to recognize and understand them, and then shut them as we have been given authority to do. The greatest light that this world has ever received has come through the church. From salvation to the development of democracy and the eradication of slavery, almost every great advance in the human condition over the last two thousand years can be directly traced to Christian truth and doctrine. Doors from heaven are now being opened to continue the advance of truth and righteousness. They are opening in order to empower the church to shut the gates of hell, represented by some of the significant issues of our times such as war, racism, murder, poverty, disease and the delusion of drugs. Along with the doors from heaven that the church has opened, some of the most devastating gates of hell entered this world through the church. Before we can confront those in the world adequately, we must close those that are within our own midst. They cannot prevail if we will confront them, but until we do they will continue their deadly work. The Man Of Sin There should be little wonder that there is such ambivalence in the world towards the church as we have been the greatest source of both blessings and curses. The apostle Paul obviously perceived this when he described the man of sin as one “...who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God” (II Thessalonians 2:4 NKJV). The temple of God is no longer one that is made of hands—it is the church! The church has been the vehicle through which the Lord has been touching and blessing this world since His ascension. It has also been the place where the ultimate manifestation of evil has taken its seat, not only claiming to be from God, but God Himself. This is a critical understanding that we must have for these times. As a prelude to the ultimate manifestation of the man of sin, the great sins of man have been taking their place in the church, one by one, claiming to be from God, and much of the church has been deceived by each one. The greatest truths to have influenced the world have come through the church. Likewise, some of the most diabolical doctrines and philosophies to assault the world have come through the church. The Lord Jesus forewarns us in the parable of the wheat and tares, that every time the Lord sows good seed in a field the enemy comes along and sows bad seedin the same field. There were destined to be tares mixed with the wheat as the Lord declared, “Allow both to grow together until the harvest; and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, ‘First gather up the tares and

69

MorningStar Prophetic Bulletins - 1994
http://www.morningstarministries.org

bind them in bundles to burn them up; but gather the wheat into My barn”’ (Matthew 13:30 NAS). There is such a mixture in the church that the greatest good and the greatest evils are all coming out of her, but the Lord is about to separate them. He is going to make the evil obvious so that it can be rooted out without destroying the wheat. The first step in doing this is to identify the tares. To prepare for this great separation, we must each allow the Lord to search us and expose what He will. We must have the humility to straightforwardly acknowledge and confront our sins if we are going to be free of them. Those who try to cover them up will be counted with the tares. We must now heed Jeremiah’s warning: “Therefore thus says the Lord, ‘If you return, then I will restore you—before Me you will stand; and if you extract the precious from the worthless, you will become My spokesman “’(Jeremiah 15:19 NAS). The Ultimate Enemy The first gate of hell into this world came through the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Through this tree, death came into the world, and death is the last enemy to be overcome. Death is the “taproot” of that tree which nourishes all of the other roots of evil in the world. This original gate of hell is actually the source of all of the other gates. When this tree is uprooted from the earth, death will no longer have access to this world. Neither will the “good and evil” that is of a humanistic origin. As I have written an entire book, There Were Two Trees In The Garden, concerning the fruit of The Tree of Knowledge and its conflict with the Tree of Life, I will not give it more attention here, other than to say that this is our ultimate battle. When this tree is uprooted from the earth Satan will have lost his access to man. When an individual has this tree uprooted from the garden of his life, the enemy, sin and death will no longer have access to him. The same is true of a congregation, city, or nation. The two trees in the Garden represent the ultimate point of conflict between the kingdom of darkness and the kingdom of God. When digging up a tree it is important that all of the tentacle roots be dug up and removed as well. If even a single small tributary root remains in the ground it can sprout again and become another tree. Throughout the church age, many of the tributary roots have been found and loosened from the earth. However, there are still many large ones that must be removed before the main taproot, “death,” can be pulled out. The Power Over Death There are basic spiritual principles that must be implemented for every spiritual victory. The first is that the cross is the power of God (see I Corinthians 1:18). We only have true spiritual power to the degree that we embrace the cross. We will not know the power of God in our daily lives until we take up the cross daily. The cross actually represents death, but a righteous death. Death is the path to victory over death. If we have been crucified with Christ, having died to this world, then neither death nor the world can have dominion over us. It is impossible for a dead man to fear, to feel rejected, to have the pride of life. Just as Jesus overcame the world by dying for it, so must we. If we have died to this world we will not fear death. However, we may have died to the world in some areas, but not in others. We may have come to the place where we would be willing to die for the gospel, but not for our families, our jobs, or even our ministries. As Spurgeon once lamented, “I can find ten men who will die for the Bible for every one who will read it!” We will not die a truly righteous

70

MorningStar Prophetic Bulletins - 1994
http://www.morningstarministries.org

death for anything that we will not also live for. That is why the taking up of our crosses must be “daily.” If we do not live for Jesus, what good would it do for us to die for Him? Such a mentality is the fruit of a deceptive religious spirit. We are called to take ourselves and all that we have to the cross every single day. Whatever is not under the cross, whatever we will not freely give up every day, is a point that the enemy can use to gain access to our lives through fear and/or pride. This is why the Lord required Abraham to be willing to sacrifice his son Isaac. Even the gifts of God can become the idols that eclipse God in our lives if they, too, do not remain under the cross. However, it is also through death that we enter into the power of resurrection life. There is no greater liberty than to love, appreciate, and properly relate to people or things that we no longer bind to ourselves with the yokes of fear or pride. There is no greater freedom to love this world, and to love it properly, than when we have died to it. When Jesus died to this world, He was then given dominion over it. We too must die to everything before we are given true spiritual authority over it. Until we have died to something, and are able to keep it under the cross, we will be incapable of exercising proper spiritual leadership over it. Only when a seed has fallen into the ground and died can it sprout to bear much fruit. As we come to the end of this age, we will be facing a direct confrontation with the ultimate enemies of God and man. We will have no dominion over them if they still have dominion over us. Before we can drive these evil powers out of our cities, we must drive them out of our own lives, and then, out of our congregations. Getting Closer To The Taproot All of the smaller evil roots feed the main taproot of death. As we uproot each one, the grip of death is weakened. One of the main tributary roots that supports the taproot of death is racism. It is easy to see how much death enters the world through racism. War is the ultimate weapon of the spirit of death, and most of the wars now raging in the world are racial conflicts. Racism is rooted in two of the ultimate strongholds of the fallen human heart—fear and pride. When the Lord Jesus declared that one of the primary signs of the end of this age would be “... nation shall rise against nation....” (Matthew 24:7), the Greek word that He used for “nation” was ethnos, from which we derive our English word “ethnic.” The Lord was literally saying that one of the most obvious signs of the end times would be racial conflicts. We are now seeing these conflicts on a scale that has never before been witnessed. The reason for this dramatic increase today is that the church is starting to confront this powerful root of evil in the human heart. Satan dwells in darkness. Light exposes Satan and displaces him. Whenever he is cast out of heaven (the high places) he comes to the earth with great wrath (see Revelation 12:9-17). The great battle between light and darkness has now begun, and there is no turning back. However, it is most comforting to know that these gates of hell cannot prevail against the church—because Jesus has prevailed, we have already won. The battles must yet be fought, but the conclusion is already determined. A Historic Gate Of Hell On August 19th, 1071, the Moslem Turks destroyed the Byzantine army in Mantzikert and took the Christian Emperor of Byzantine, Romanos Diogenes, captive. The Moslems then advanced deeper

71

MorningStar Prophetic Bulletins - 1994
http://www.morningstarministries.org

into European territory, targeting France, Spain and the Balkans. As their progress threatened all of Europe, the pope devised a strategy for retaking Jerusalem that would relieve the pressure on Europe, requiring the Moslems to return to defend their own lands. The pope then claimed to possess a letter from heaven which appointed him to summon the European nations to liberate The Holy Sepulchre. In March, 1096, Peter of Amiens left on his donkey arriving in Trier, just before Easter. On Easter Sunday he marched into Cologne with about 10,000 men. He then sent out preachers to proclaim the gospel of the crusades and to raise further support in the Rhineland area. Consequently, his army grew to a total of 30,000 men. Peter was thus given the credit for starting the crusades that would change the known world, and would leave some of the deepest cultural wounds between Christians and Moslems which remain to this day. He also began a persecution against the Jews, with doctrines that would lead to some of the worst atrocities in history. Seeds Of The Holocaust Needing more money for their venture, the crusaders determined to force the Jews to support the mission, as they were the primary bankers of that time. Many of the knights financed their participation in the crusades by mortgaging their estates to the banks. Then the crusaders decided that they did not want to pay the banks back, so they declared it a divine mandate, to turn against the Jews because “they killed Jesus on the cross.” Gottfried of Bouillon, the sovereign of Lower-Lothringen, which also included the Ardennes, presentday Holland, and the Rhine Provinces of Cologne, issued a decree that all of the remaining Jews living in Lower-Lothringen should be killed in order to atone for Christ’s death. As a result, the Jews in Cologne and Mainz gave Gottfried 500 silver coins in order to buy their protection. Gottfried used this money to pay for and arm his forces, and his method of raising financial support quickly became popular throughout Europe. In this way, the Jews found themselves, not only loaning money to the crusaders through their banks, but paying ransom money to bishops and knights to buy protection. Even after they had paid for protection, Rhineland Count Emmerich started killing the Jews in the region of Cologne. Peter’s army then attacked the Jews in Prague while Gottschalk, Peter’s former pupil, massacred them in Regensburg. Thus began almost 900 years that the Jewish people have been subject to continuous threats of annihilation. In one of the greatest perversions of the Savior’s message, some of the bloodiest and most diabolical onslaughts against the people through whom the Prince of Peace came, arose from the very ones who claimed to be His ambassadors on earth—the church. Every new generation of Jews are taught this history out of selfpreservation. The great Jewish scholar Abba Eban once wrote, “History has taught us well that no situation is so bad that it cannot get worse.” They remember well, but remain dumbfounded that the church does not seem to remember at all. These are wounds and openings that the gates of hell are still using, which only the church can close. A Tragic Victory On January 13th, 1099, Peter’s army of crusaders started for Jerusalem. They came to the city on June 7th. At midday on Friday, July 15th, the Holy City fell. It is a biblical testimony that many of God’s victories look like defeats to the natural man, with the cross being the greatest example of this. In this case, the opposite is true. When Jerusalem fell to the Christians, what was considered by many to be one of the greatest victories of the church, would live in infamy as one of her greatest defeats.

The Moslem mayor had been relatively tolerant in dealing with all his citizens, including the Christians and Jews. He allowed them to have their own places of worship and freedom to come and go as they pleased. He even allowed the Christians in Jerusalem to go over to the side of the crusaders during the siege. When it was obvious that the Christians would prevail in the siege, the mayor and his subjects likewise expected a high degree of chivalry from their conquerors. They were terribly mistaken. Many Moslems gathered under a Christian banner where they had been promised amnesty. The crusaders, thus having them surrounded, slaughtered them all. The Jews of the city fled into the Synagogue. Having them trapped inside, the crusaders torched the building killing everyone, including the women and children, in a gruesome spectacle. This was a deliberate strategy to eradicate all nonChristians, so that Jerusalem could become a Christian city. The triumphant crusaders, many completely covered in the blood of their victims, then gathered at the Holy Sepulchre, and, weeping with joy, they offered thanksgiving for their great “victory.” Over 50,000 Saracens alone were killed in this terrible massacre. It is true that there were many atrocities afflicted upon Christians by Moslems, but on this terrible day treachery was raised to a new level in the relations of men to one another. Most tragically of all, this was done in the name of the Savior who had come to deliver men from such evil. The people of this world have not been able to forget these terrible events. They are trying to protect themselves from future onslaughts at the hands of religious zealots. But, to the world’s dismay, the church seems to have long ago forgotten these tragic mistakes, and continues to resist acknowledging them. Therefore, the church has continued to make the same mistakes over, and over, even if they do come in different forms. Trust is an essential element in any genuine communication, and the world will not trust the church again until she acknowledges, understands, and stops making the same terrible mistakes. Forces are now working powerfully in the church to lay the same stumbling blocks before this generation that caused the previous ones to stumble. Because we do not recognize these gates of hell, most new Christian movements, even evangelistic “crusades,” contain tares that eventually sidetrack them. However, the Lord is preparing to give us the wisdom to understand and remove these stumbling blocks. There is a movement growing throughout the international body of Christ that is devoted to reconciliation and identificational repentance for the sins of our fathers. We Have Met The Enemy And He Is Us We may look back at the historic church and smugly think that these atrocities were committed by the Catholics. This can be a most deadly mistake. Regardless of whether we are Protestant, Pentecostal, Charismatic, Third, Fourth or Fifth Wave, we have made all of the same mistakes, if only to varying degrees. We condemn the Catholics for having a pope who claims to sit in Christ’s rightful place as the Head of the church, but we have many popes—men,, whom we allow to usurp the Lord’s rightful place in our lives. We abhor the worship of Mary and the saints, but we worship our churches and make idols out of many of our ministers. We lament the crusades, but continue trying to establish the kingdom of God on earth by might and by politics, rather than by the Holy Spirit. We may be appalled by how the Catholics sold indulgences, which taught that the grace and forgiveness of God could be bought with money, and we should be. This was one of the greatest affronts to the cross in history. However, it is hard to turn on a television or read a ministry newsletter without seeing our modern form of indulgences—”If you give to my ministry, then the Lord will bless you.”

It is true that the Lord receives our offerings as seed and multiplies it back to us for more sowing. However, we have continually crossed that line into the practice of trying to buy the grace of God, such as giving money so that we will receive our healing. We are healed by the stripes that the Lord Jesus received on His own back and any teaching that implies that there is any other way is an abomination. It is crucial that we examine our history to recognize our mistakes. If we do this in humility, we will see how the gates of hell, that are still perverting our life and message, gained entry into the church. However, we are only dooming ourselves if we view these as the mistakes of other groups. If we do not see how their roots have gripped us all, we will not be able to remove them. This is why the Lord has decreed that the sins of the fathers are visited upon the children for generations. This is not for the purpose of punishing the children for what their fathers did; but every time there is a sin there is a wound. It is a fallacy to think that wounds heal with time; they become infected if they are not dressed and closed. Sins are passed on from generation to generation until someone comes forward to close the wound and bring healing. That is why the leaders of restoration movements in Scripture usually began their prayers with “Father forgive us for the sins of our fathers.” The crusades are only one example of profoundly misguided religious zeal. No Moslem despot or Ayatollah in history has been as diabolical and cruel as some leaders of the church during the Inquisitions. We may protest that these were the Catholics, but again, the Protestants, and, to some degree, almost every spiritual movement since, have been guilty of all of the same errors. Even while Martin Luther was composing one of the greatest hymns ever written, A Mighty Fortress Is Our God, he was having an Anabaptist starved to death in a dungeon because he would not submit to his Protestant dogma. Victory Over Death The historic church has wounded many cultures and nations. However, the greatest spiritual schism is not between Catholics and Protestants, but between the church and Israel. The terrible attacks on the Jews were not limited to the Catholics. With the emergence of the Protestant church in the 1500s, theologies were also promulgated within that branch of Christendom which continued this persecution. Some of these theologies have been traced to the roots of the Nazi holocaust. The Jews have survived each succeeding, and seemingly more vicious assault, but the wounds these people have received from Christians over the centuries have grown very deep. This has caused them to equate Christianity with the destruction of their souls rather than with salvation. This schism between the church and Israel is now being addressed. That Israel has now exchanged ambassadors with the Vatican is a remarkable event. Evangelicals also have a Christian Embassy in Jerusalem. However, we are still a very long way from the healing of the wounds. Even so, before this age closes, this dividing wall between Jew and Gentile will be removed— through Christ. When the “natural branches” are grafted back in, it will mean nothing less than victory over death. This is because it simply cannot happen until both the church and the Jews come to the place of ultimate humility whereby the ultimate grace of God can be extended to us. The Test Of The Gospel The Book of Romans was Paul’s masterpiece of theology and the most clear exposition of the New Covenant in the Bible. The issue of the Jewish relationship to the gospel is addressed in chapters nine through eleven. This is the climatic point by which he sums up this theology before concluding the letter with exhortations concerning Christian behavior. Paul asserts that the hearts of Jews were

74

MorningStar Prophetic Bulletins - 1994
http://www.morningstarministries.org

hardened so that they would not accept the gospel until it was time for them to be grafted back into the tree which God had planted. He also declares that if the cutting off of the Jews for a time resulted in blessings for the Gentiles, the greatest blessing of all will be the result of their being grafted back in, which is, “life from the dead.” This is nothing less than victory over the last enemy. In Romans 11:28 Paul makes the remarkable statement, “...concerning the gospel, they (the Jews) are enemies for your sake...” (NKJV). The Jews have historically represented the greatest test for the gospel, but it is for our sake. In a sense, Jews are the “acid test” of our message. Until the church comes to the spiritual stature where she provokes the Jew to jealousy, we have not yet attained to what we have been called. The Jews were “hardened” to make them the hardest to reach. In this way, they have become the barometer of humanity, reflecting the overall condition of the state of man. When the gospel is preached that grafts the “natural branches” back into the tree, the church and Israel will then be able to reach the whole world. This is why Paul said that the gospel should be preached “to the Jew first.” This was not just out of favoritism, but because the Jew represents the greatest challenge of the gospel, and one which we must have. Understanding the place of “the natural branches” in the plan of God has been one of the great historic, and current, stumbling blocks in the church. Paul warned us in Romans 11:18-21: “Do not be arrogant toward the (natural) branches... for if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will He spare you.” Pride toward the Jews can cause us to be cut off from the grace of God. Even so, our relationship to the Jews is not meant to be a stumbling block, but a stepping stone. Because the Lord gives His grace to the humble (see James 4:6), the proper relationship to the Jews requires a humility that will propel the church to a higher grace and anointing. Likewise, for the Jews to recognize the place of the church in the plan of God will require a profound humility, but one that will enable the great grace of God to be extended to them in unprecedented measure. There are “replacement theologies” being promulgated in the church today that promote an arrogance toward the natural branches, which have caused many to stumble. These “replace” Israel with the church in the plan of God, attributing all of the promises for natural Israel to the church. There are some obvious truths in these doctrines, and there is truth to the understanding of “spiritual Israel,” those who are born after the Spirit. However, as Paul made clear in Romans 11, the promises made to natural Israel cannot be revoked without impugning the very integrity of God. These mixed theologies usually result in a blinding of the church to what is one of the most critical issues of our time—the grafting back in of the natural branches. There are also counter-replacement theologies that have sprung up in reaction to the replacement theologies. These have Israel replacing the church in relation to the promises of God. This is just as spurious as the replacement theologies, sowing arrogance in the natural branches. Pride cuts us off from the grace of God regardless of how it comes. For about two thousand years, it was the time of the Jews, during which God moved almost exclusively among them. Now we are coming to the end of about two thousand years of the time of the Gentiles, when the Lord dealt almost exclusively with the Gentiles. Our history contains all of the cycles of apostasy and restoration that ancient Israel experienced. Now, at the end of this age, we are not coming to another time of the Jews, but the time of the Jews and Gentiles together. It will take the supreme humility on the part of each to see the purpose of God in the other, which was precisely

75

MorningStar Prophetic Bulletins - 1994
http://www.morningstarministries.org

God’s point in requiring this joining together. Neither the church, nor Israel, can achieve their destinies and callings without the other. Israel is now spiritually very far from her place of ultimate destiny in these last days. In many ways, the church is just as far. The Jews do not believe the doctrines of Christ, whereas the church has been deceived into thinking that believing them in our minds is the same as believing them in our hearts. This often causes our pride in doctrines to remove us from the very grace of God that we preach. The final joining together of both “into one new man” is not going to look like Israel, ancient or modern. Neither is it going to look like the church, ancient or modern. What is coming will be something entirely new—something only the most profoundly humble will be able to perceive. This profound humility will release the supreme grace of God, resulting in the healing of all spiritual and cultural wounds. When the church and Israel have been grafted together through Christ, the time of the restoration of all things may begin, and the last enemy will have been overcome. Summary As we come to understand more about this last enemy, death, and how it maintains its grip on the world, we will also be able to understand all of the other manifestations of the enemy, and how they maintain their grip. Before we will have authority over them in the world, we must remove their tentacles from our own lives. Then we must address them within the church. When this has been done, we must resolutely attack their strongholds in the world. It is not possible to adequately address such broad and controversial issues within the confines of a bulletin. This is only intended to challenge our readers to be open to these issues as the Holy Spirit is now leading us to confront them. Some of these will be addressed in much more detail in the next edition of The Morning Star Journal. Future editions of The Bulletin and The Journal will continue to examine what we consider to be the most deadly gates of hell, from both a historic and prophetic perspective. We will also seek to more deeply understand the “doors of heaven,” whereby the grace of God is extended to us in special ways. Grace has been popularly defined as “undeserved favor.” That is not the complete definition, but it is accurate enough for our present needs. As soon as we begin to feel that we deserve the favor of God we have departed from the path of life. “God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6). Probably the most basic quality of genuine humility is the true knowledge of our dependency on God. Only true humility we keep us in the grace of God, which will give us the light to perceive all of the stumbling blocks, traps and diversions that assault every believer. In almost every case, we will learn that the gates of hell are opened by pride, and the doors of heaven are opened by humility before the cross. We must embrace the cross and march forth with grace, not judgment or condemnation, but grace and truth.

The War
MorningStar Prophetic Bulletin No. 11 (1994) Rick Joyner Unless otherwise indicated, all Scripture quotations are from The New American Standard Bible (NASB).

Satan’s ultimate goal is to populate hell. His greatest ally for accomplishing this goal is death. His most effective means for bringing about death is war. Instigating war in any form, between anyone that he can get to fight, is one of his most basic strategies against mankind. He views every war as a victory, and the most destructive ones as some of his greatest achievements. Just as Jesus is the Prince of Peace, Satan is the Prince of War. There are “righteous wars” which are fought for righteous causes. Even so, every war should be viewed by the church as a significant defeat, even if the side of righteousness prevails. They are defeats because the Lord has invested in the church an authority for waging spiritual warfare which, if exercised properly, can accomplish the goals of righteous causes without the destruction of war. It is Satan’s strategy to bring every human conflict to a violent confrontation, which results in as much death and destruction as possible. Just as Jesus was sent to destroy the works of the devil, we have been sent into the world with this same commission. As one of Satan’s ultimate goals is to spread death by war, the church is sent forth as peacemakers to thwart this strategy. The church must go to war against this basic enemy strategy of war. This ultimate conflict between life and death is about to enter its last and greatest battle. It will rage from one end of the earth to the other, in every city and town, on every social, philosophical, and political front. A time is coming when every debate, every political campaign, every social movement, will be seen as a battle line between these ultimate spiritual forces. There will be no neutral ground, no truces, no peace in this war. This will be both the most dangerous and the most opportune time for Christianity since the beginning. Fight For Life The ultimate goal of the church is to populate heaven. Our ultimate weapon is the gospel of salvation—the words of everlasting life. The church is about to be given the words of life with greatly increased power. These words will be spiritual bombs and hand grenades with the power to destroy even the most effective strongholds of the enemy. Individual statements spoken by Christians will be able to unravel the intricate webs of deception that the enemy has taken years to weave. Single public statements by Christians will undo the enemy’s propaganda built upon multiplied thousands of books, articles and public statements over many years of time. This power in words will not be gained cheaply. Those who are given this authority will have faithfully waged their own wars against their own tongues, bringing them into submission to the Holy Spirit. They will have spent years waging war against their own wayward thoughts, bringing them all under subjection to Christ. Pure waters must come from pure wells. The degree to which our own lives are pure will be the degree to which the waters of life can flow through us, as is written: “Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life” (Proverbs 4:23 NAS). The Weapons Of This War

77

MorningStar Prophetic Bulletins - 1994

Solomon declared: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit” (Proverbs 18:21 NAS). Every word that we speak can have the power to impart faith or fear, peace or strife, joy or gloom, love or hatred, and we ourselves will eat the fruit of our words. The apostle wrote, “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap” (Galatians 6:7 NAS). Are our words spreading the light of the kingdom of God, or the darkness of this present evil age? Because “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matthew 12:34 NAS), our words will reveal either the light or the corruption that is in our hearts. The apostle Paul exhorts us in II Corinthians 13:5: “Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you—unless indeed you fail the test?” (NAS) How can we test ourselves to see if Jesus is in us? By testing our conversation. Is Jesus in our words? Our words and our conversation reflect what is in our hearts. If Jesus truly lives in us, He should be the primary subject of our conversations. If we spend more time talking about movies, sports, even the news and current events, than we do about Jesus, it should be a sign to us that we are failing the most important test that we can ever take. Whatever eclipses Jesus in our lives as the focus of our conversations, has eclipsed Him as the focus of our hearts, and has become an idol taking His place. Not only does our conversation reflect what is in our heart, but if Jesus truly rules in our hearts He should be the One who controls our tongues. The ultimate goal of every Christian should be not only to love Him above all else, but to be always led by His Spirit. Our ultimate goal should be to only speak words that are prompted by the Spirit, that reflect the heart of God, and reveal the light of the Savior in this dark world. This should not just be the goal of prophets, but the goal of every Christian. We are all called to abide in Him and manifest the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him in every place. The Battlefield Every warrior in this battle is given positions to defend and positions to take from the enemy. We must defend our families, our congregations, our offices or places of work, against the words of death, while working each day to extend the domain of the kingdom. Our battle maps are our prayer lists. We must have specific targets. We must “box in such a way, as not beating the air” (I Corinthians 9:26 NAS), but knowing what we are hitting. As we gain dominion over the smaller assignments we will be given more authority to go after bigger strongholds. Those who take spiritual dominion over their families will then be given their neighbors and their families. Those who take their neighborhoods will then be given their cities to fight for. Joel describes the army of the Lord: They run like mighty men; they climb the wall like soldiers; and they each march in line, nor do they deviate from their paths. They do not crowd each other; they march everyone in his path. When they burst through the defenses, they do not break ranks (Joel 2:7-8 NAS). It is imperative that Christians begin to view every encounter with others as an opportunity to sow life. This does not mean that we must declare the plan of salvation to every checkout clerk or waitress, but we must take a stand for the kingdom of God by resolutely maintaining our position in Christ. This

78

MorningStar Prophetic Bulletins - 1994
http://www.morningstarministries.org

position is always demonstrated by the fruit of the Spirit. Whenever we can endure the often trying and unfair encounters of life, without compromising our position in the love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control, we are extended the limits of the kingdom of God. Troubles are opportunities. The greater the troubles the greater the opportunities. There are no troubles greater than God. Regardless of what comes against us, we can say with Paul, “... thanks be to God, who always leads us in His triumph in Christ, and manifests through us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him in every place” (II Corinthians 2:14). Victory is assured! All that we must do to see the victory is to abide in Christ who has already won it, and marvel at the wisdom of how He works it out. When we begin to view trial as an important confrontation with the enemy in which ground can be won from him, we will begin to count our trials as joy. The more victories that we see the more joy that they will bring to us. However, we must never settle for anything less than victory and witnessing the sweet knowledge of Jesus prevailing through it. Being the light of the world, or being the light in a situation, may not even involve declaring the gospel. Sometimes we are called to be the light just by doing what is right, and demonstrating a Spirit that is contrary to the spirit of the world. Such are true demonstrations of the kingdom. Such demonstrate the rules of another realm where the fruit of the Spirit prevails. A Demonstration Of The Kingdom One of the greatest demonstrations of the Spirit that I have ever witnessed was not a miracle—it was the demonstration of profound peace and thoughtfulness in an airline ticket line. Because of problems with incoming flights and other delays, the line to one connection had grown to many more people than could be processed in the short time before the flight was to depart. Strife and impatience were rising to the point where I seriously thought that it was going to get out of control. At the worst possible moment, just after more bad news had been announced, two large, boisterous women, each carrying two large suitcases, started pushing their way through the line demanding to go to the front. I do not recall ever witnessing more obnoxious attitudes in anyone, much less in a situation like this. Even though they were women, I was fully expecting someone to deck them both. Then, to my dismay they headed right toward my friend who was in line for the flight. As the clamor behind him grew, he turned to see what was happening. As others were actually beginning to jostle the two women, my friend instinctively raced to their assistance, asking if he could help them with their bags, and offering them his own position near the front of the line. This action was so contrary to the prevailing spirit in that place, that it stunned everyone. A great quiet came over the entire scene. I looked around and almost everyone was staring at my friend with obvious amazement. As he picked up his own bags and moved to the back of the line it seemed that every eye was on him. The two women were also undone by the unexpected, and unquestionably undeserved, kindness. The agents, who had also witnessed the scene, suddenly became agreeable and somehow the flight was delayed enough to get everyone on it. I have witnessed many miracles of biblical stature, but that airport scene still stands out to me as a profound demonstration of the kingdom. As hell was fast gaining control of a volatile situation, and moving it towards potentially serious strife, it seemed that Satan brought in two of his biggest guns in the form of a couple of very bad mannered women, aimed

79

MorningStar Prophetic Bulletins - 1994
http://www.morningstarministries.org

them right at the Christian, who quickly and easily disarmed the enemy and his entire host with one genuine act of kindness. Evil will always be overcome with good. We have been given this same power, in every situation. When strife arises in our family or at the office, we can join the side of the enemy or the side of the Lord. Who gains the victory in that situation will almost certainly be determined by our choice. If we join the Lord it does not matter if anyone else joins Him with us. One person and the Lord always make a majority. If we allow the fruit of the Spirit to prevail within us, He will ultimately prevail in any situation. Summary Paul said that “...the God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet” (Romans 16:20 NAS). It is significant that he said that it was the “God of peace” and not “the Lord of hosts” (Lord of armies) that crushes Satan. One person who abides in the peace of God has more power than armies. Solomon stated it well: “He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit, than he who captures a city” (Proverbs 16:32 NAS). We are in a war. This war will not stop just because we decide we do not want to fight anymore. We are all in a fight to the death. Until death is defeated, the fight will not be over, for any of us. If we try to back out we will only open ourselves up to a greater onslaught. However, the more we fight the more peace we will know. The peace that we can have by fighting is greater than any peace that the world can know. We must start to realize every day when we wake up that by the time we lay down again we will have either taken ground from the enemy, or he will have taken ground from us. Why not make the best of it and go after all of the spoil that we can? The Lord is about to impart a divine militancy to His people so that they are going to wake up every day looking for a fight, but for all of the right reasons. We are about to discover the power of the weapons that we have been given. There is no army in the world that has an arsenal with more power than that which the Lord has at the disposal of even His youngest believer. As we discover the power of those weapons the whole world is going to wake up to the nature of the true battle. The whole world is going to be brought to the Valley of Decision. \ The ultimate battle at the end of the age will not be fought over abortion, or homosexuality, or any other single moral issue. The battle is much greater than any of these. The battle is between life and death itself. This does not mean that we should not take stands against these issues, but we must see beyond them or we will continue to flail at the branches instead of putting the ax to the root of the tree. We must understand both the true nature of the battle and the nature of our weapons if we are going to prevail in war. We may have the power to demonstrate, but what we really need are demonstrations of power. For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ, and we are ready to punish all disobedience, whenever your obedience is complete (II Corinthians 10:3-6 NAS).

It is a primary strategy of the enemy to draw us into trying to fight with carnal weapons. He knows that when we do we have crossed over to the dark side, and regardless of what we are fighting for, we are helping his side in the battle. Many of his agents, who come as “angels of light,” are zealots and fanatics. Most of them are sincere, but they are zealots and fanatics whose tactics are to use carnal weapons, intimidation and political pressures to try to accomplish their agendas which are righteous. Those who succumb to their pressures and intimidations to join their strategy will pay a most terrible price, and it will not be for the sake of righteousness or the advancement of the kingdom. Satan will not cast out Satan. Murder will not cast out abortion, anger will not cast out rebellion, and hatred will never cast out immorality. The Lord Jesus stated when affirming this,“But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you” (Matthew 12:28). In Paul’s words: Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all men. If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men. Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. “But if your enemy is hungry, feed him, and if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals upon his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:17-21 NAS).

And The Waves Of Change
MorningStar Prophetic Bulletin No. 12 (1994) Rick Joyner Unless otherwise indicated, all Scripture quotations are from The New American Standard Bible (NASB).

The 1994 elections were the biggest repudiation of a political party in this century. They signaled the most dramatic shift in the direction of American politics since the election of Franklin Roosevelt over 60 years ago. Its effects could even exceed those of the Reagan Revolution, or at least carry it to a new level. However, the signal to strike out in a certain direction is not the completion of the trip. This is bigger than the repudiation of a political party. If we do not discern the bigger picture, the next change could just as well move even more powerfully in the other direction. Change is itself a major force that is now sweeping across the earth in great waves. Those who are going in the right direction at the right time are being carried forward by a power beyond their comprehension. However, the next wave often comes from the opposite direction only to slap them down. Where are all of these changes taking us? Are we really making forward progress, or are we just moving back and forth but actually going nowhere? As a jet pilot, I was taught that even if your engine instruments are staying within their safe parameters, when they begin oscillating back and forth, a catastrophic breakdown is imminent. If we portrayed the American political changes over just the last four years on such an instrument it would be frightening to any pilot. George Bush went from one of the highest approval ratings ever recorded by a president, to defeat at the hands of a man who was so far behind in the polls that almost no one gave him a chance to be elected. Now President Clinton's party has suffered one of the greatest defeats in a mid-term election in this century. Even so, the waves of change are quite capable of sweeping all the way back in the other direction by the 1996 elections. A member of our prophetic council in Charlotte, Bruce McIsaac, recently had a dream of President Clinton riding a carousel. The operator of the ride held out a brass ring, saying that anyone who could grab it would receive another ride free. Clinton was able to reach it and received another turn. Before the ride began again however, he was given a beautiful Indian headdress. Then the Lord spoke in the dream saying, "The first time he was the people's chief. This time he will be My chief." Clinton is not called "the comeback kid" for nothing. If he is coming back, it would be in all of our interests to pray that he will be the Lord's chief. We must never forget that the primary business of the Lord on the earth today is to change men. As with every great watershed period in history, the one we are now in has the potential to be a great advance for civilization. It also has the potential to carry us into a period of great social catastrophe. More than likely, it will result in some of each. Ephesians 4:14 has a crucial message for the church during these times: As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves, and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming. It is imperative that the church not be led by the different waves of change sweeping about, but by the Holy Spirit. We must not get carried away by the force of current events, but follow the path of life that will lead us through them to the right destination. Soon, those who have remained stable and

consistent through the clashing changes will gain the respect of the whole world, and a great deal of influence with it. The Power of Change Some of the fastest and most profound changes in political power that the world has ever experienced have all come within the last few years. Many of them came with such force because communism had resisted change for so long. When a dam is built, if there is no release of water it will back up until the pressure is great enough to sweep away the dam. The waters of change had been dammed up in Eastern block nations for many decades, but that only multiplied their power when they were finally released. The break in the dam of socialism came when just one small nation, Hungary, decided to open its border with the West. Quickly, the whole dam began to crumble as nation after nation in Eastern Europe opened its borders. Dictator after dictator fell. The first, and most powerful communist nation in the world then gave way to democracy and free enterprise. The upheaval from such profound changes coming so fast is still wreaking havoc. Russia still totters on the brink between becoming a true economic superpower, or degenerating into anarchy and one of history's great disasters. When changes occur with such power, extraordinary leadership is required to control them. Without this leadership, extreme shifts are inevitable. Extremism will always result in some form of tyranny. When extremism conquers one problem it will inevitably open doors to even worse ones. When the rising tide of democracy swung to extremes in the French Revolution, the people first tried to kill all members of the aristocracy. Then, they swung to the other extreme and submitted themselves to another dictator even more autocratic than the king--Napoleon. The final wave of change that overthrew the last remnants of feudalism during World War I also opened the door for Hitler and made World War II inevitable. Now the revolution which overthrew communism is also swinging back to the other extreme toward fascism. Paul Cain prophesied in the mid-eighties that communism was about to become "commuwasim," but that what would ultimately replace it, a union between the old forces of communism and Islam, would be far more dangerous. The fall of communism was the result of many factors, but it was ignited by a people who had long been in bondage demanding their freedom. This was a very positive development, but freedom without purpose will ultimately lead to tyranny. The enemy's ultimate strategy is to keep the forces of change swinging to extremes in order to push them beyond any responsible leader's ability to control them. He is seeking to further polarize every possible faction from every other one. The resulting chaos will require a degree of authoritarianism to regain control that will exceed even the tyranny of communism in its worst forms. Freedom Must Be Proclaimed Should Christians just stand by and let this happen because it is destiny? Absolutely not! If the world falls into the deepest darkness it will be because our light went out. This is happening on our watch. We have been called for such a time as this, and regardless of how evil the times become, the Lord will raise up a standard against it. It was during the times of Israel's greatest apostasies that her greatest prophets emerged. The church that will emerge during these times will stand and prevail over the darkness. Much of the power behind these dramatic changes is the result of people who are seeking freedom, but without real direction. II Corinthians 3:17 states, "... where the Spirit of the Lord is there is

84

liberty." This could be translated, "Where the Spirit is Lord, there is liberty." There is no true freedom in this world other than that which comes from being under the Lord's authority. Just as a train may be "free" to go wherever it wants if it were able to depart from the tracks, it would not get very far without becoming mired in the ground. So it is with humanity. We may think we are more free when we depart from biblical restraints, but it is the tracks that God has provided for us that truly free us to become what we were created to be, and to move forward with unconscious ease. We have now come to possibly the greatest opportunity for the church that walks in true authority, and true liberty, to emerge. But we must not remain duped into expecting the governments to do our job. If the church does not stand up at this time, the vacuum will be filled by a leadership that none of us want to see. Calming the Storm Because the people are being continually tossed about by the waves, the first order of business must be to calm the storms that are creating the instability. As Isaiah foresaw our situation in these times: Alas, the uproar of many peoples who roar like the roaring of the seas, and the rumbling of nations who rush on like the rumbling of mighty waters! The nations rumble on like the rumbling of many waters, but He will rebuke them and they will flee far away, and be chased like chaff in the mountains before the wind (Isaiah 17:12,13). The miracles that the Lord performed were meant to be "signs." Signs point to something; they give us direction. When He stood up and calmed the storm that was stirring up the sea, it was prophetic of the time when He would stand up to calm the nations. The seas often speak of the nations in Scripture, such as in Revelation 17:15 that says, "...the waters which you saw where the harlot sits are the peoples." When the nations begin to be cast about like the waves of the sea, it is the Lord's purpose to calm them. The church is not here to just stir up more waves, but to calm those that are thrashing about without purpose or direction. This is done by giving them purpose and direction. As the church remains calm, steadfast, and moving ahead with resolution, the world that is being jostled about will take notice. Isaiah foresaw that the time of greatest darkness would be the time of the greatest glory for the Lord's people, and would cause the nations to turn to them: Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. For behold, darkness will cover the earth, and deep darkness the peoples; but the Lord will rise upon you, and His glory will appear upon you. And nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising (Isaiah 60:1-3). The church is here as the Lord's representative, to do the things that He did on earth. We are here to calm the storms. First we must learn to walk on the water, above the waves that are affected by the storms. When Peter walked on the water he was not actually walking on the water, he was walking on the command of God. He asked the Lord if He could come to Him, and the Lord said, "Come." The word of God has more substance than anything in this physical world. If the Lord commands us to walk on water, or walk above riots and anarchy, we can do it because we are not walking on the elements, but on His word.

Riding Out Storms One of the first things that a pilot is taught about weather is to stay out of thunderstorms. The most violent weather on earth can be found in a thunderhead. However, if you do get into a thunderhead, if you can remain calm and avoid panic, you will likely get through it. The key is not to overreact to the storm, but just slow down to a speed that will not over-stress the airplane during a potentially violent shock, and hold your heading. A large thunderhead is seldom over ten miles wide, so the quickest way through it is to hold your course and go straight. Turning will actually keep you in the thunderhead longer, and will add stress to the aircraft because turns automatically create extra "G" forces. Pilots who panic and try to turn around in a storm often cause just enough extra stress on the plane to go beyond its limits. Many churches likewise over-stress their people by making the tragic mistake of trying to change their course while in the midst of a storm. There are times for all of us to make course changes, but we should not do it while in the storms. To survive the storms we should first keep calm, slow down a little, and just hold our course. You will come out the other side quicker than if you try to turn around. Personal Responsibility and Salvation Socialism is doomed to the same garbage heap of history upon which feudalism was cast. Civil government was given a mandate from God, but that mandate has limits (Romans 1 3:1-7). Whenever a government exceeds those limits it has moved beyond the grace of God. Governments do not have a mandate to be all things to all people. When the people get addicted to the government to meet all of their needs and take care of all of their problems, it will ultimately destroy both the government and the people. Much of the church, like government, has to a large degree succumbed to the spirit of socialism, trying to be all things to all people. Many Christians have likewise become addicted to the church to meet all of their needs and fix all of their problems. This usurps the responsibility meant to be the individual's for the purpose of revealing both sin and grace. Many leaders of the church are getting burned out because they are taking the people's yokes instead of the Lord's yoke, and the people are weakened because they are never allowed to grow up spiritually. This only produces those who have been called "high maintenance, low impact Christians." These are not lights in the world, they are black holes who suck up all of the light around them, consuming the ministry of the church. Personal responsibility is fundamental to the work of redemption. The more we take personal responsibility off of people, the further from salvation they will drift. The first result of the fall was selfcenteredness; Adam and Eve looked at themselves and saw their nakedness. The second result was blame-shifting; the man blamed the woman and the woman blamed the serpent. Redemption has not fully worked in our life until we have learned to quit blaming others for our condition, take responsibility for our own actions, and stop looking at ourselves and start focusing on the Lord. The mandate that the Lord has given to both to the church and to civil governments is meant to hold men accountable for their actions, not take responsibility off of them. The mandates of God given to governments and the church are limited so that the true grace of God can reach the people. When we try to be the Holy Spirit to people we only doom them and ourselves to ultimate failure. The Lord Jesus is the answer to every human problem, but we must all go to Him individually for the grace we need. No one will be saved because they know someone who knows the Lord. We must all know the Lord for ourselves. This does not supplant the leadership of the church, but that leadership does have its limits. All true spiritual authority will lead men to Christ because, "There is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ

Jesus" (I Timothy 2:5).Any ministry that does not promote a personal relationship to the Lord, and personal responsibility, is an enemy of the cross of Christ. The cross requires that each one of us be crucified with the Lord. This cannot be done through someone else. Changing the Course with Wisdom Most of the great sweeping changes in the world are swinging toward democracy and free enterprise, or are at least trying to. Both of these require a high degree of personal responsibility. Free enterprise is a reflection of the kingdom principle that every man should sit under his own tree (Micah 4:4). In spite of the increasing darkness in many areas, there are trends in the world toward true kingdom principles. However, the overly zealous helmsman who tries to turn a large ship too fast will only put it in jeopardy of capsizing. Devastating mistakes are being made by those who may have the best of intentions, but are trying to make drastic corrections to the course in the midst of the storm, instead of riding out the storm and then making the proper course corrections while in the calm. Course corrections which are been made too fast can be dangerous even in the calm. The Reagan Tax Reform Law is a good example. It was the right thing to do, but because the changes were implemented too fast it created such havoc in the commercial real estate industry that we will be paying the tab for a long time to come. Much of the real estate boom in the seventies and eighties was the result of tax laws that were too generous, and which inflated the true value of real estate investments. The law needed to be changed, but a large sector of our economy had been playing by that set of rules for so long that they could not make the turn as fast as the new law demanded. As commercial real estate values plummeted because of the removal of tax incentives, the Savings and Loan Industry was devastated. The government slyly blamed crooks for the catastrophe, and there were some, but they were not the cause of the Savings and Loan Crisis--it was caused by a good Tax Reform Law that was implemented too fast. The constant changes in tax laws have created a business environment like trying to play a game when someone is constantly changing the rules. Can you imagine what it would be like to play a baseball game where they decide that instead of you being safe when you are standing on the bases, you are out, and they don't tell you about this change until you're caught! Then, after you get used to that new rule, they change it back and get you again. Such a game would cause the players to be at best hesitant about everything they did. That is the business environment under which many are trying to operate. Every new administration or congress comes in and changes the rules on them. It becomes difficult, if not impossible, to form long term strategies. There are unrealistic farm subsidies that are based on archaic laws which are half a century old, and they do need to be changed. However, they must be revised with wisdom, giving farmers the chance to adjust their strategies without being ruined. Many farmers have already been devastated by some of the recent changes. Good people were ruined because they were playing by one set of rules, and without warning the rules were changed on them. There are also many changes that need to be made in welfare. However, if we do not make the changes with wisdom, giving people time to adjust to the new rules and plan their lives accordingly, many of our cities will pay a tragic and unnecessary price. We will then be facing a crisis much worse than the Savings and Loan debacle, and probably worse than we can now imagine. We are also headed toward a financial catastrophe if changes are not made in entitlement programs. If we act before the problems reach crisis proportions, we can act with wisdom and strategy, giving everyone time to adjust to the new rules without being devastated by them. If we wait too long the damage will be much greater and many undeserving people will be the victims.

Democracy is the greatest form of government on earth. However, it is also inefficient. It is much better to deal with some inefficiency than the alternative, but there are waves of change that are now moving with such force that they threaten to doom democracy if they are not properly managed. The Power of Truth Of course, there are moral issues that require a different response. When we come to the knowledge of sin in our life, to implement a five year plan for changing our ways is not the proper response. We should make a quick and complete "U" turn. There are biblical cases where nations, and even empires, made such instantaneous moral changes. The same can happen in a nation today, but such a change will never come through legislation, or by popular vote. Truth is stronger than any lie. When you open your shades at night, darkness does not come in, light shines out. Light is stronger than darkness. Every great and positive moral change in civilization over the last two thousand years has been the result of prophetic individuals, or groups, taking a stand for truth and refusing to compromise. The call of the church is not just to be relevant to the times, but to stand on the eternal truths that transcend time, and have the power to dictate the course of history. In this climate of change the church has its greatest opportunity to stand for the truth that will steer modern civilization to a point of true redemption and reconciliation, with our Maker and with each other. Anything less than this will turn the great opportunity that we now have into one of civilization's greatest catastrophes. The windows to a new realm have been opened. If the light does not rise up now, the darkness will fill the void. Martin Luther was one of the most powerful prophetic voices of the New Testament age. He was just a monk, but he shook the most powerful men and institutions of his time to their very foundations. Not since Paul and Silas compelled the leaders of the mighty Roman Empire to declare that, "Those who have turned the world upside down have now come to us!" had the world witnessed the revolutionary power that was carried by Luther. He took his stand against the greatest darkness of his times, refused to retreat, and drove the darkness back. The tiny little church of Wittenburg, Germany was hardly as big as many garages are today. But God does not care about size when He determines to do something. When Luther nailed his Ninety-five Theses to its little door, the whole earth read them and trembled. No conqueror or political leader in all of history changed the world as much as that one monk. He is one of the greatest testimonies of the power of even one humble man, who takes his stand on the truth without compromise, to make the whole world bow its knee to the truth. That is the nature of true prophetic power. Jonah is one of the most extraordinary examples of prophetic power in the Old Testament. He was a man with significant character flaws of his own, but when he preached even the great heathen city of Nineveh repented from the king all the way down to the animals. That was prophetic preaching! The Source of Prophetic Power The power over the unfolding events of our times will not come from a ballot box. When the people came to make Jesus king, He fled to the mountains. If the people make you king then the people will rule. There is a major difference between the ones who receive their authority from the people, and those who receive their authority from above. The former may ride the waves of change, but the latter starts the waves.

It is right to rejoice when righteous men come to power. It is right to support them and to vote for them. However, the church must remember that she has a higher calling. Prophetic authority does not come by popular vote, and its influence is not dictated by public opinion. True spiritual authority cannot be influenced by the whims of men. It is not encouraged when men approve, or discouraged when they disapprove. True spiritual authority only does what the Father is doing. It is therefore founded upon the pure and holy fear of God, not the approval of men. Radicalism vs. Prophetic Truth Prophetic truth often sets in motion the most profound changes, but it is not the voice of extremism. Prophetic truth is not just a reaction to current events; it is simply a stand for biblical truth, by the Spirit of Truth, which will always manifest the fruit of the Spirit. As James declared: Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth. This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy. And the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace (James 3:13-18). The enemy's strategy is to release division in order to perpetuate even more conflict and tossing of the waves, but "... the God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet" (Romans 16:20). Note that he did not say that the Lord of hosts, or armies, would do this, but the "God of peace." It is no accident that the Christian's armor, listed in Ephesians 6, says that our feet are shod with "the gospel of peace." It is the peace of God that crushes the head of the serpent. The greatest fortress that we have today against the schemes of the devil is to abide in the peace of God. Those who abide in the peace of God will not get caught up in the conflicts of the times, they will rise above them, and overcome them by pointing to a higher way. Jesus was the most radical man who ever walked the earth. However, His purpose was not to be radical, but to be the Truth. His radical nature was not against the world, but for it. He boldly confronted the obstacles set up by men to block the path to life, but His vision and purpose were always motivated by His love for men. We must not fear men, but we must love them. Any other motive but love will pervert our radical nature and use it for evil. Judas was a radical too, who obviously wanted to promote Jesus, but he was also controlled by political expediency. Certainly the church is called to the battle, but we must not be drawn into the battle on the enemy's turf. The weapons of our warfare are not carnal, and if we get drawn into the fight on the earthly realm, we will lose our source of spiritual power. The church that attempts to fight on the low road will itself be swept away by the waves of change. The church that takes the high road walking above the waves will, at the proper time, have far a greater influence than any ballot box could ever give it.
