Oslo is culture: Oslo is the Viking Capital, Oslo is Edvard Munch and Henrik Ibsen, Oslo is the city of the Nobel Peace Prize and Oslo is home to Norways magnificent new Opera house. Among the internationally known attractions are The Munch Museum, The Viking Ship Museum, The Kon-Tiki Museum, The Polar Ship FRAM, The Norwegian Museum of Cultural History, The National Gallery, The Vigeland Sculpture Park, The Nobel Peace Center and The Ibsen Museum. Just outside the city is TusenFryd, Norways biggest amusement park. The easiest way to explore the citys museums is with an Oslo Pass. The Oslo Pass offers free entry to most of the citys museums and attractions, as well as free public transport and free parking in municipal parking places. The Oslo Pass also offers discounts on different products, sightseeing and activities. (Akershus Castle) Medieval castle from the 13th century. Remodelled to renaissance castle in the first half of the 17th century. Today the castles beautiful ball-rooms are used by the government for State events. The castle chapel, as well as the Royal Mausoleum, is open to the public. Groups may reserve guided tours all year round.

(Armed Forces Museum) The museum shows Norwegian military history from Viking times until post World War II. The exhibitions present the union with Denmark until 1814, the union with Sweden 1814 - 1905, the German attack on Norway on April 9th 1940, the sea battles during World War II and the cold war that followed. History is told through unique objects, models and dioramas. Guided tours upon request. Caf.

The football museum presents Norwegian football in a surprising, interesting and interactive way. It follows the premises of a football game. The 1st half covers Norwegian football in Norway and the 2nd half presents Norwegian international football through 100 years. Guided tour of the national team arena, in the national teams changing rooms, followed by a special-effects film. New exhibition: The Premier League Dream.

Fram is the worlds strongest wooden ship, and the one that has sailed the furthest to the North and to the South. Fram was used for three great polar expeditions by Fridtjof Nansen 1893-1896, Otto Sverdrup 1898-1902 and Roald Amundsen 1910-1912. Fram was built in 1892, and the original ship and intact interior and artefacts are on display. Around the ship are interesting and detailed exhibitions of polar history. Caf.
The Historical Museum opened in 1904 and is one of Norways most impressive Jugend-style buildings. The exhibitions describe the life of Norwegians through 9000 years. The Viking age and medieval times exhibition tell the tales of struggle for power, daily life and faith. The chamber of treasures displays the most significant Nordic Viking gold treasure and a collection of coins and medals shows Norwegian coin history. The ethnographical exhibitions explain the life of indigenous peoples in non-western cultures from the Arctic, East-Asia, America and Ancient Egypt.
The HL centre is a research and communications centre established at Villa Grande, Bygdy. The centre will focus on the topics of the Holocaust and other genocides, war and violation of human rights, as well as living conditions for different minorities. The main attraction will be a permanent exhibition about the Holocaust, where the fate of the Norwegian Jews during World War II is a central theme. The exhibition also includes other genocides, and will expose how historical events are relevant to todays society.

Edvard Munch has a unique position among Nordic painters and is considered a pioneer in expressionism. The Munch museums collection, left to the city of Oslo by Edvard Munch himself, consists of a large number of paintings, graphical prints and drawings. By constantly changing the exhibitions, the museum presents the variety in his production. Free entry from 23.01 to 31.03 and 01.10 to 31.12 2009. The National Museum - Architecture is part of the National Museum for Art, Architecture and Design. The main building is designed by architect Christian Heinrich Grosch and originally housed the Bank of Norway. Also, there is a new pavillion designed by architect Sverre Fehn. Altering exhibitions. University of Oslo The Museum of Natural History consists of: the Botanical Garden, an oasis in the middle of Oslo which is open all year round. In the greenhouses, the evolution of plants and exotic plants are displayed. In the Geological museum you will find dinosaur fossils, meteorites and gemstones. The Zoological museum shows Norwegian and foreign animals, as well as temporary exhibitions.
The Nobel Peace Center presents Alfred Nobel, the peace prize winners and their work. The Norwegian Maritime Museum offers a unique experience of Norway as a coastal and maritime nation. Get to know the history of the city through the film Oslo for 1000 years (15 min No/ En speech). Historical city exhibition: Christiania 1624 1850. In 1624 the medieval town of Oslo burnt down. Christian IV rebuilt the renaissance city Christiania near Akershus Fortress. His new city became the centre for todays Oslo. The old City Hall at Christiania square was the citys meeting place. The Intercultural Museum works towards the acknowledgement, understanding and respect for cultural diversity. We produce exhibitions that focus on the history of immigration and cultural changes in Norwegian society. The museum has its own art gallery, where we present a variety of art and traditions. The City Hall opened in 1950. Decorated with motifs from Norwegian history, culture and working life. The Citys administrative body and seat of the City Council. The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded in the City Hall on December 10th. Please note that the City Hall may be closed on certain days due to special events. Notice will be given in advance. Carillon- playing from the City Hall bells. Guided tours on Mondays and Wednesdays at 10am, 12pm and 14pm. Daily during the Summer season and also at 16pm on Sundays. 39 Vigeland-museet
The Vigeland Museum is Oslos only museum for sculpture. The Museum was originally built as a studio and residence for sculptor Gustav Vigeland (1869-1943). The permanent collection contains amongst others Vigelands early works, his portraits and monuments, as well as plaster models of the sculptures in the Vigeland park. The Museum also shows temporary exhibitions of contemporary art. Free entry from Oct 1st March 31st.

(The Viking Ship Museum) Museum of Cultural History, The University of Oslo. The Museum displays the Gokstad ship, the Oseberg ship and the Tune ship which are the best preserved Viking Ships ever found. The ships were found in three royal burial mounds where they had been buried, more than 1100 years earlier, to carry their royal owners to the other side. The museum also displays the unique finds, including a carriage, sledges and other goods from the graves.
