231/07 ACCESS TO PRISONS FOR PSR INTERVIEWS
A letter has been sent to Governing Governors by Michael Spurr, Deputy Director General of HM Prison Service, in response to ongoing reports from probation areas of difficulties booking legal visits for PSR interviews. The letter highlights the context in which we are working. It confirms the need to balance time pressures on probation areas to deliver reports and on prisons to manage competing demands for legal visits space. Issued to Chief Officers via the Chief Officer Gateway – 31 October Back to the top

232/07 CREATION OF THE JOINT YOUTH JUSTICE UNIT
A new Joint Youth Justice Unit, reporting to the Ministry of Justice and the Department for Children, Schools and Families, is officially launched today. The unit was created following the Machinery of Government changes in June which gave the new Department for Children, Schools and Families joint responsibility with the Ministry of Justice for youth justice policy and the sponsorship of the Youth Justice Board. The new arrangements for joint working provide an opportunity to bring together the two Departments for the benefit of children and young people. The Unit will develop policy and law in relation to children who offend and are at risk of offending, and ensure that children and young people in contact with the criminal justice system achieve all five outcomes of Every Child Matters.

The Justice Committee will have more members and additional staff, and we can expect it to be active in looking at the department's work. Alan Beith MP is expected to remain as Chairman. The Committee will continue with CASC's enquiries on devolution and sentencing policy, and is considering what to look at next.
