Understanding the value and use of IS becomes necessary for the tasks of identifying business opportunities, business process design, and creating managerial procedures and policies to implement IT-enabled business changes. The objective of this course is to build a basic understanding of the value and uses of information systems for business operations, management decision making, and strategic advantages. There will be no letter grades assigned to individual exams, assignments, and projects. All assignments and exams will be graded by the TA. If you have questions about your grade, please e-mail or speak with the TA. There will be a peer evaluation conducted at the end of the quarter. If more than one member on your team complain about your contribution to the team reports, your team report scores will be discounted accordingly.

Each team has the flexibility to choose one of the two types of team project. YOU ONLY NEED TO DO ONE TYPE, NOT BOTH. Team Project type 1: Report on a real case of IT use in business You are a group of reporters from Information Week. You are writing a real-world story about using information technology to enhance a business (big or small). Your objective is to win a contest of best story that gives a group of undergraduate business students an eye-opening education experience. The story you are telling (report) should contain the following components: 1. Describe the business and the area targeted by the IT you are reporting. 2. Describe the function of the IT (what does the IT do for users?) in detail 3. In what ways does the IT application enhance the business? 4. Problems/issues associated with the use of the IT application 5. What would you suggest for improvement? The following set of criteria will be used to evaluate your stories: 1. The story contributed to my education experience 2. It is a rich story that included its organizational contexts and business implications 3. They have done a thorough job in writing an in-depth story 4. They have presented the story in a style that is easy to understand Team Project type 2: Write 2 reports on current IT topics You are a group of reporters from Information Week. You are writing two real-world surveys on two important current topics concerning the roles of information technology in our society. Possible topics include (but are not limited to): Data security and privacy Large scale IT failure and its impact (e.g., Chase online banking failure) Internet and the organization of political movement (e.g., the tea-party movement) Challenges in implementing large scale information systems (such as enterprise resource planning project) Impacts of social networking (e.g., Facebook) or professional networking (e.g., Linkedin) The net-neutral Internet Business Intelligence Competition between traditional and open source software Choose should 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. any two topics on the list or other topics you found to be intriguing to write two reports. In a report, you Describe/define the subject matter. What is it? Why should we care? Current states of affaires in the subject area. What are people/companies doing in this area? Impacts of activities in the subject area. In what ways does it change our life? What are some of the difficult issues that have to be resolved in this area? A glimpse of the future in this area.

Sources: try to use well-known sources such as Business Week, Wall Street Journal, Information Week, Economist, and other trade publications or newspapers. Googling the subject is certainly a good starting point. Do not just

base your report on a single blog somewhere. The written report should not exceed 10 double-spaced pages. For each project, you should submit a paper printout to the TA. Individual project 1: Build a simple Database using Access You will need to create a simple database using Microsoft Access for the business operation of Netflix Video Rental business. The database should contain: three tables: Customer, Video, and Rental transactions. In designing these tables, all principles that we emphasize during in-class lab sessions should be observed . Makeup at least three records in each table. This is an individual project. Copying someone elses database is cheating. You should use the dropbox function at the course website. Individual project 2: Build a simple DSS using Excel The Print Shop management is considering outsourcing some administrative tasks. We are making a decision analysis model to evaluate the different alternatives. The following descriptions outline the various inputs to the decision. UCI Consulting has offered to take over various clerical jobs for Print Shop. If the consulting company is hired, Print Shop can cut the number of its employees by 10. Print Shop will pay UCI Consulting a fee for their services. If the outsourcing fee is less than the laid-off workers salaries, Print Shops profit will increase. Chapman Consulting can be paid in one of two ways: an annual flat fee or a percentage of sales. Every year Print Shop makes a net income forecast for the coming four years. Assume we are in early 2013, management needs a forecast for the year 2013-2016. The forecast must be based on what has happened in 2012 and on the possible outsourcing options. You need to make a DSS in Excel that lets management answer this question: Given possible outsourcing scenarios, what will be our net income in each of those years? The alternatives need to be evaluated by the DSS are the three outsourcing method used: None, Flat Fee, or Percentage of Sales. The DSS enables Print Shop to play what-if with the inputs, to see the results, then to decide what to do. In designing the DSS, all principles that we emphasize during in-class lab sessions should be observed . Academic Integrity There is a zero-tolerance policy for academic dishonesty in this course.
