In accordance with the Regulations those taking Part II in one year take four papers.
“Subject to the provisions of Regulation 11 a candidate for Part IIB who has not previously obtained honours in Part IIA shall offer, with the approval of the Faculty Board, on application by the candidate’s Tutor not later than the division of the Michaelmas Term next preceding the examination, four papers chosen from the papers available in Part IIA and Part IIB; provided that a candidate who does not include Int. 1 among the papers chosen may offer two essays of not more than 5,000 words in place of one of Pol. 7–9, 11, Soc. 4–7, 9–10, Int. 3–9 in accordance with the provisions of Regulation 15.”
If students from other Triposes would like to take the one year Part II route the Faculty recommends the following: 1. For those students who wish to take one or more IIB paper in politics: We recommend that they do not take
Pol 6 unless they also take Pol 1 and/or Pol 2 or have taken comparable papers in another Tripos. Pol 12 unless students have taken Economics Part I or an Economics paper in the History Tripos. Pol 13.
Students who wish to take Pol 7 should take Pol 3 as well, students who wish to take any of Pol 8, Pol 11 and Pol 12 should take Pol 4 as well and those who wish to take Pol 9 should take either Pol 3 or Pol 4 as well. 2. For those students who wish to take a IIB paper in psychology: (a) Students who have not taken any social or developmental psychology previously should normally take Psy 1 or Psy 4. (b) Students may also take one or more of Psy 2, Psy 3, Psy 4, Psy 5, Psy 6 and Psy 7 but they should be aware of the fact that for these papers it is necessary to read and understand empirical research in psychology that makes use of quantitative and qualitative methods. Those students who are not familiar with these methods are advised to include Int.1A (i.e., the variant that includes statistics) as one of their paper choices. (c) ) Students who do not have an NST or MVST background are advised NOT to take Psy 2. 3. For those students who wish to take a IIB paper in sociology: (a) Students normally ought to take either Soc 1 or Soc 2. (b) Students should not take Soc 3.
Students in this category can undertake to be assessed by two 5000-word essays for one of their papers.4. the suggested paper combinations will be considered by the Teaching Committee and the appropriate Department. . provided that they are not also taking Int 1A. Students in this category are not permitted to undertake a dissertation as one of their papers. 5. Directors of Studies with a student wishing to take a one-year Part II should consult the Director of Undergraduate Education. and then a recommendation will be made to the Faculty Board.
