Career Development Center NC State University 2100 Pullen Hall 919.515.2396 careers.ncsu.edu Appointments: ncsu.edu/epack

Your study abroad experience has undoubtedly had a tremendous impact on you. It may change the way you think and live forever! Many employers and graduate school admissions departments understand this and value it. It is up to you to share this experience with them through the resume, job application, and interview process as it relates to the job you are seeking. Struggling with how to describe your experience abroad? Start with a list of statements that describe your experience, leading with strong action verbs such as lived, attended, researched, traveled. An extensive list of action verbs can be found on page 10 of the Job Search Guide: http://careers.ncsu.edu/wpcontent/uploads/2012/09/CareerGuide_12_13_FINA L_singles_lo.pdf

Examples:
Study Abroad: Universite de Nice, Nice France, Summer 2012 Completed two courses in French culture, taught in French language. Study Abroad: Gubbio, Italy, Summer 2011 Completed one graphic design studio, researching regional history of design methods and materials. Selected by principal of local graphic design firm to collaborate on a publication cover. Final project was displayed at the Gubbio Art Center.

Interviews Be prepared to describe your experience in an interview in terms of the job for which you are applying. Demonstrate to the interviewer that you understand the skills you gained from the experience, and how those skills translate into the working world. Language development, cultural competence, creative problem-solving, and adaptability are all examples of transferrable skills.

Resumes Many students choose to include Study abroad in the education section of a resume. Study abroad fits well here, but you may prefer to create a separate section for this experience.
