..Jackie loved to go to sleep at night. her mother would help her walk on her hands. all the way to bed. . Before she got tucked in.

She smelled something funny in the air. . so she walked down the hall to her parents’ bedroom. One night Jackie woke up past her bedtime.

” said Jackie. It’s made of marijuana..” said her mom. “Marijuana.” “Mar-a-whahh?” asked Jackie. “how about we go on a bicycle ride tomorrow. “This is a joint.“What’s that. baby. Okay?” “Okay.” said her mother.” smiled her dad.” “What kind of plant?” “Well. and I will tell you all about it. “is a plant.. sleepily. Mommy?” asked Jackie. “Are you and Daddy smoking a cigarette?” “No. .

The next day Jackie woke up early to get ready for her adventure.. Then the two of them hopped onto bicycles and began their journey.. . when she remembered. It was Halloween! After a big breakfast. Jackie and her mother put on costumes.

” answered Bob. “I’ve got some growing right now. “Hi there.” said Jackie’s mom. “You’ve come to the right place. coming out from behind a corn patch.” said the farmer.Their first trip was to the farm where Jackie’s mother got her vegetables. “Farmer Bob?” she called out. “Nice costumes!” “I came to teach my daughter about marijuana.” . Let’s go look.

stopping to point out the different plants. “is a marijuana plant. skunky smell. He grew many! There were avocados.Farmer Bob walked Jackie and her mom through his garden.” said Bob. They also saw a cactus.” . “This. figs. with ruddy skins like an alligator. Mmm! Finally he reached a pot with a sweet. pumpkins and even mint growing by a strawberry patch.

” he said. I pick the seeds to make food and oils. “You could say it is. it can be short.” “Is marijuana a fruit?” asked Jackie. “It grows flowers to make its seeds. Or.“This plant lives all around the world.” .” said Bob. very tall with long green leaves. fuzzy and purple! Marijuana has been cultivated for thousands of years just like fruits. Then I clip the flowers and dry them. “It can grow very. beans and grains.

artists. teachers. Marijuana makes some people feel happy. actors.’” “Why do you use it. “I don’t. “It just puts me to sleep!” .” “They smoke flowers?!” “Yep. Other people say it’s ‘dreamy. “and smoke ‘em. “My friends eat them.” said Bob. Doctors. Farmer Bob?” asked Jackie.“What do you do with the flowers?” asked Jackie.” he said. even mayors and presidents.

“Wow.” said her mom. Dr. Eden. after they left. “I’m going to plant some marijuana at home!” “We’ll talk about that later.” . I think she will have some more information for us. “Now we’re going to see my doctor.” said Jackie.

The receptionist told Jackie and her mother that they could come right in. .Dr. Eden had a very colorful office.

“Marijuana is for adults who can use it responsibly.” “Will it help me if I use it?” asked Jackie.” said the doctor. It is a strong medicine . it can be a medicine or a drug. it helps some people relax. I don’t recommend it for everyone. “is used for many reasons.not healthy for you right now. It can heal pain.“Marijuana. Like many plants. “No.” .” said Dr. Eden. I know you understand that there are some things that are okay for an adult. it can be used too much. and it calms the stomach and helps many others eat when they need to. but like many things. It gives some people joy. but definitely not for children.

“Marijuana is for grown-ups... Eden’s office. “I know that smell!” she said.Jackie and her mother left Dr. Jackie stopped to sniff the air.” Suddenly.. You can make a choice to try it or not when you are an adult. .” said Jackie’s mom. “Like driving a car or drinking a glass of wine. with her words and beautiful pictures floating through their heads.

“Oh?” said the fourth. “I call it.” said another.” “I call it cannabis sativa.. sinsemilla. “Excuse me. Miss.” said the third.” said one of the men. “I call that la la la.” “And I. ..” answered the policeman.” . “Mister. “These men were smoking what I call grass. two police officers drove up and told the men to turn around and put their hands up against the wall! Jackie looked at an officer and asked him. “Yes.Before he could even finish. “Let me try to explain. why are you arresting these people?” “Young lady.. it is.” he said slowly.” “Marijuana isn’t against the law!” said Jackie. and that is against the law.

” . My grandfather grew it and made cloth from the plant’s stalk.“People were once allowed to smoke marijuana. “There was a time when the government even told farmers to grow it. Others made rope and paper from it. Back then it was called Hemp. toast and cakes made of homegrown grass.” began the police officer. My grandmother once ran a café where she sold tea.

“One day. Marijuana became an illegal plant. a small but powerful group decided to make a law against marijuana.” Jackie couldn’t believe it! “Mommy. Doctors tried to protest the new law.” she said breathlessly. but the politicians and lawmakers did not listen.. “Our government started a war around the world to stop people from growing it.. “is that all true?” .” continued the officer.

too.” “That’s true. not to change them.” said Jackie’s mother. But our job is to enforce rules.” she said. If you think a law is a mistake. “Any government can make a bad law.” said the officer. “Luckily.“It is true. “Many police officers don’t agree with the law against marijuana. we live in a country where people have always worked to change unfair laws.” . then maybe you should work to fix it.

But some other officers may not be so nice. as they walked away. “Thank you!” said Jackie. “we’re going to let these men go.” said the men.“In the meantime. please. So move along.” said the second officer. . with a warning.” “Thank you.

Jackie’s mom added some of Farmer Bob’s strawberries to their dessert. That night. tomato salad. “I am going to work to make all the laws fair. bread and macaroni. Jackie’s family ate a dinner of squash. For a treat. “When I grow up.” announced Jackie.” .

. or a scientist.” said her dad.” “Or a pilot!” said Jackie. “Maybe you will be a lawyer. Jackie’s father flew her like an airplane to bed. “There are many ways to help make change. After their meal.

.“Or a dancer.” she dreamed. or a judge.” .... or a. or a gardener... “Or a newspaper writer...
