President’s Address
Dear Friends and Colleagues,  Last year I wrote about Autodesk’s 3D scanning app, 123D Catch, and I have an update.  Along with Autodesk’s 2014 product announcements, Autodesk announced ReCap Studio and ReCap Photo; a pair of 3D scanning apps to create intelligent 3D models from laser scans and captured photos using the power of cloud computing.  The apps are ideal for designers, engineers and architects allowing us to “add, modify, validate and document our design process in context from existing environments.” The first app, ReCap Studio, allows users to “clean, organize, and visualize massive datasets captured from reality”. The second, ReCap Photo, allows users to create “high-resolution textured 3D models” using photos.  3D scanning has been around for almost a decade now, the important thing to note here is that these services are now becoming available to everyone and this is the only technology out there that provides quality and scalability capable of handling extremely large data sets.  Think about the possibilities of capturing an entire downtown area or even a city in 3D.
