Basic 4:2 offensive tactics O ldfa shione d, outdate d, ove rcom e : ye t e ve ry te am plays it bjoe rn, Monday 02 January 2006 - 15:41:29 O ldfa shione d, outda te d o r o ve rcom e . Those a re the a ttribute s the 4:2 offe nse re ce ive s from propo ne nts of 'm ode rn handball'. Ye t e ve ry te am k nows the situation: you play with a wing cutting in, or the pla ym ak e r crosse s with one of the back s and stays at 6m , there are m any m ove s that ca n e nd up in a 4:2 situation. O ne that I se e ve ry ofte n is the cutte r from the wing:

The back court pla ye r on the side of the circle runne r is a ttack ing, the de fe nsive pla ye rs on the othe r side a re anticipa ting the pass to the pla ym a k e r or back , forcing those pla ye rs furthe r out and le aving room for the wing to cut in be hind the de fe nse .

If the de fe nse notice s the cutte r, the back is force d to pa ss the ball to the ce nte r tha t has now m ove d to the opposite back court position, while the form e r back is now on the wing.

It is a stale m a te position a nd m any te am s try the ir be st a t a pick -and-roll gam e on the back court positions.

A sim ple shift of the we ight of the attack to one side of the court ca n ve ry quick ly ge t the de fe nse into a trick y situa tion. First, the back court pla ye r turne d wing com e s out of the corne r to re ce ive the ball, giving the back court playe r tim e to re position him se lf furthe r to the ce nte r position. Pa ralle l to tha t, the othe r back court playe r positions him se lf a t the side line , while the wing m ove s to the corne r. Fa k ing to the outside of the court, the wing pla ye r with the ball dra ws be twe e n de fe nde rs one and two, forcing de fe nde r from zone 2 to he lp out.

The wing the n passe s the ba ll e x a ctly in front o f the 7m line , whe re his back court pla ye r is now in full spe e d he a ding for the goal. This yie lds a 3 on 2 ove rloa d situation in the ce nte r of the court:

If a ny of the two de fe nde rs in the third zone m ove towards the pla ye r with the ba ll, o ne of the circle runne rs ha s the room to for a wide ope n pa ss. If the de fe nde rs stay passive ly a t the 6m line , the pla ye r with the ba ll has an e x ce lle nt opportunity to score . A good de fe nse will not ge t into trouble ove r a sim ple m ove lik e tha t, though. It will m ove it's zone two de fe nse in front of one of the circle runne rs, in orde r to fre e a zone 3 de fe nde r to guard the ce nte r offe nsive pla ye r with the ball.

The following pa ss to the le ft ba ck court, howe ve r, is not so e asy to counte r, e spe cially, if it is e x e cute d quick ly, and m ove s with spe e d:

Aga in, we have a 3 on 2 o ve rloa d situa tion a nd the back court pla ye r ha s a ll the options: if the zone 2 de fe nde r ste ps up and gua rds him , the circle runne r is ope n be hind him , if the wing de fe nde r guards him the wing is ope n and if both are passive , he has a wide ope n alle y towards the goal.
