INTRODUCTION

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF THE RC HOBBY?
If you ever wanted to assemble working machines, race a full-size car, but found it too expensive, teach your child more about real cars and how they work, release your competitive spirit, or meet like-minded people in a friendly, open setting, then RC could be for you! The grin of satisfaction and happiness from “building something from nothing” is one that almost can’t be explained. The first thing most people do when they run their car or truck is race it up and down their street or local car park. Running an RC car will always attract a crowd! Explaining everything about your car or truck is a great way to meet new people, make friends and impress your neighbours! Racing an RC car is definitely a unique way to have fun. Spending a day at the track is cheaper than a night at the movies, with race fees costing about £3 to £7 at most tracks. You will quickly find a friendly person there who can give you advice, tips and other help. While many HPI cars and trucks never see a race track, we encourage this activity as a way to meet new people, learn more about your car and get more involved with the hobby! Our HPI events are just one way to have fun racing, plus you may have a track near you! See your local phone directory for hobby shops and if you don’t have a location nearby, you can always ask permission to use an empty car park or dirt field. Many parent/child “teams” can be seen at RC tracks or events, working together on one or more cars. Building RC cars, learning how various RC systems work, adjusting car and radio settings, making friends and working together are just a few of the things a child can learn as they assemble, adjust and play with their RC car. It’s a truly good time that both child and parent will enjoy and cherish as they work together to make the car work the way they want.

NITRO, PETROL OR ELECTRIC?
This could be a tough decision - you can’t really go wrong with any of these choices! All three types are easy to start up and keep going. Nitro and petrol kits are fantastically loud, adding to their fun factor, whereas electric cars and trucks are relatively silent. Electric vehicles can also be run indoors, whilst anything running on fuel cannot. Electric cars are slower than their nitro and petrol cousins in a wide-open area, however on a confined track they are often faster because they are lighter and can accelerate faster. Nitro and petrol vehicles are able to simply refuel and keep going for as long as the receiver battery lasts (about 45 minutes or more), but electric vehicles must have their batteries changed every 5-8 minutes, and unless you have spare batteries you can wait 30-45 minutes to recharge. Because there is oil in the fuel of nitro cars and trucks, they tend to be a bit messier, but with regular maintenance this is nothing to worry about.

WHERE CAN I RUN OR RACE?
Part of the process of deciding what type of RC car or truck you should get should involve the environment you have around you. On-road cars generally need a smooth and clean paved surface to run on such as open car parks. With trucks, the type of surface doesn’t matter too much because they can drive on pavement, dirt, gravel, etc. Tall grass is not ideal, but for short periods of time it is okay. Open fields, vacant car parks and construction yards are perfect places to run or race an HPI truck. Always make sure to ask permission when driving on private property! Most of HPI’s customers enjoy running their car or truck by themselves. Running the car up and down the street or through a field or car park can be lots of fun, but it’s much more fun to drive around with another car or truck! However, some of our customers find that just driving on their street isn’t enough... they want to actually COMPETE with other RC drivers. These people need to RACE on a racetrack!

GETTING STARTED IN RC?
It’s much easier than you think to get involved in the radio control car hobby! The following section is a guide that will help answer some of the common questions you may have. Radio control cars come in two basic forms: “toys” that are advertised during cartoon shows on television and sold at electronics and toy stores; and high performance “RC” cars and trucks that are sold at specialist hobby shops. RC cars and trucks cost a little more at first, but they are much faster than toy cars... and you can repair them if needed, which is usually impossible to do with toy cars. You can also upgrade an RC car or truck to make it faster, more durable, and more adjustable, so your car is constantly evolving to fit your needs. But the question is, what do you want to choose for your first RC kit?

If you want to try competitive racing, you will find yourself involved in one of the most exciting and fun activities you can participate in! All HPI cars and trucks can be raced, it’s just a matter of finding enough racers to form your own race class at a local track. Racing is an activity that can be enjoyed every few months, or you can dive in and surround yourself with the terminology, routines and competition on a daily basis. It’s entirely up to you. For some hobbyists there’s nothing that compares to competing in racing events. At the highest level the drivers travel around the world and are sometimes even sponsored by manufacturers, just like real racing! To find a track near you, see the links section of our website. ON-ROAD OR OFF-ROAD?
On-road cars have quick and precise handling, can hit high speeds, and have scale realism so they look like the cars you see on racetracks and streets around the world. With four-wheel drive (4WD), they are stable and easy to drive. HPI offers on-road cars in both electric and nitro versions, so it’s easy to find something that fits your needs. However, driving off the kerb or on dirt is not what they are designed to do. Off-road vehicles feature big tyres, long shock absorbers and the ability to drive just about anywhere. They can handle jumps, dirt and other obstacles in your backyard or an empty car park. While some RC off-road cars and trucks are meant only for race tracks, HPI’s line of off-road kits can be used both on the track and for recreational driving.

With HPI RC cars you have got a choice. HPI offers traditional model car kits for self assembly as well as the very popular “Ready-To-Run” versions where only a few steps are necessary to get the car running.

Simply insert the Roto-Start into the engine adapter and with a quick press of the starter button your engine will be up and running within seconds!

MOTOR, SPEEDO & RACING BATTERIES

SUPER SPORT KIT – THE FUN OF ASSEMBLING
If you enjoy building model cars yourself, HPI has got the perfect range of kits for you. The HPI Super Sport kits are real kits with all the parts needed to build the car. All the parts are packed in numbered bags referred to by the manual - building the car step by step is made even easier. Identifying parts is simple. The comprehensive manual shows 1:1 drawings for all small items, and if things weren’t easy enough, you also get the HPI RC Car DVD included in every HPI kit! To allow you to make your own choice of RC components all Super Sport kits are supplied without radio gear and can accommodate most common RC components on the market. All HPI Super Sport kits come with a high spec configuration and lots of option parts already included. MONSTROUS BIG BLOCK POWER!
The Savage X SS 4.6 is in kit form, not preassembled, so experienced R/C modellers can have the pleasure and satisfaction of building it themselves. The kit does not include electronics, so owners can customise their Savage exactly how they want it. The Savage 4.6SS features our powerful Nitro Star K4.6 (.28 in3) engine that pumps out 2.9 horsepower for a top speed of 45 mph and enough power to do wheelies on command! The powerful K4.6 engine has an anodised billet aluminium head to keep it cool even during extreme off-road driving, true ABC construction using a long-life chromed sleeve, an 8.5mm composite carburettor for high performance and improved high temperature tuning, and a pullstarter for easy starting. The engine is mated to a high performance polished tuned pipe to help maximize power output. The entire drivetrain is equipped with heavy duty diff shafts and cup joints for strength and durability. High grip Dirt Bonz tyres are 40% lighter than our standard Savage tyres for quicker acceleration. To beef up the braking, our dual disc brake kit comes standard, featuring two vented stainless steel disc brakes and a machined steel brake hub. THE “CLASSIC” SAVAGE
The Savage 3.5 RTR is built around the classic Savage 21 RTR, the legendary original Savage that has proven its power, performance, durability and strength since its first release in 2002. The Savage 3.5 is packed with all the great features that make a Savage a Savage and its fully upgradeable to the max. The “classic” 3.5 is simply the perfect entry into the awesome Savage range! At the heart of the Savage is the unique Twin Vertical Plate chassis (TVP). Made from rigid 2.5mm thick aluminium the TVP chassis gives the Savage a strong and stable platform and a low centre of gravity. With extremely wide track suspension and the longest oilfilled shocks in its class, the Savage gains superior ground clearance - all the foundations are in place for extreme performance over the roughest terrains and for “big air”jumps! To make it even stronger, the Savage 3.5 RTR features all the latest Savage enhancements. The Nitro Star 3.5 engine has been updated with a two needle slide carburettor for easy engine setup and stable running! A “High Flow” dual stage air filter provides effective engine protection with low maintenance. Four bevel gear diffs and a 3-piece clutch beef up the drivetrain! For a cool custom look the chassis plates and roll bar are now anodised blue and the 6-spoke wheels come with a shiny chrome finish. The Savage 3.5 RTR is ready to run, equipped with a high quality pistol grip radio and the very reliable and powerful Nitro Star 3.5 engine. Only a few steps are required to get the car started. No other big block truck has got such a long record of proven strength and performance!

MASSIVE FUN!
The Baja 5B is a giant 1/5th scale off-road buggy that is nearly 32” long! Its design is revolutionary for large scale RC cars, paying tribute to the classic style of real Baja buggies: Long suspension arms for high ground clearance and extreme suspension travel, and realistic integrated rollcage that makes the Baja 5B look like it’s ready for the Baja 1000. The big size allows the Baja 5B to go where smaller RC buggies can’t and makes the Baja 5B’s driving experiences as close as you can get the the real thing. A giant 23cc “Fuelie” petrol engine is included and it delivers enough power to make the Baja 5B feel as quick and nimble as a 1/10th scale buggy. The Baja 5B runs for more than 30 minutes on a single tank of petrol and refueling costs a fraction of nitro hobby fuel. A unique channel chassis made from rigid 4mm aluminium gives the Baja 5B the classic look and extreme stiffness and durability. “Hyper Adjust Piston” coilover shock absorbers are machined from aluminium and have 5 dampening settings that can be adjusted externally without removing the shocks. Kit builders… the Baja 5B SS comes as an unassembled kit with a complete instruction manual for the build-up, and it has a huge list of hop-up parts you won’t find on the RTR version. ELECTRIC 4WD MONSTER TRUCK
Electric power is the easy way to get into off-road monster trucks. Charge up, switch on, and enjoy the ride. The E-Savage captures that ease and adds the proven durability and extreme off-road capabilities of the famous line of Savage trucks. Two high-power 550-size motors come pre-installed, giving the E-Savage the power you need for off-road action and wheelies on command. Two 3300 mAh 7.2V rechargeable Ni-MH battery packs are included for 14.4 volts of electric off-road power. Plus, the included GT Escape charger allows both batteries to be recharged at the same time. If you haven’t tried rock crawling yet, HPI has a quick and inexpensive way to get into the sport. Our conversion set transforms the popular Wheely King truck into the latest craze in R/C… a rock crawler! The conversion set lengthens the wheelbase by 2 ¼”, taking it to the maximum allowed by the rules to help provide the stability needed for extreme rock crawling. Anodised aluminium lower links are durable and give the Wheely King authentic crawler looks and ground clearance is extended with high link suspension mount brackets. To maximise weight layout, the set comes with a servo mount that allows the battery to be moved forward. Diff lockers are included, effectively locking the front and rear differentials for extra traction. Also included are convenient body mounts and hex hubs that allow compatibility with a wide variety of bodies and wheels.

HPI 1/10th scale touring car bodyshells are available in two different widths: 190mm and 200mm (see part number below each body). 190mm bodyshells fit on cars that are no wider than 190mm, which are usually electric touring cars like the HPI Sprint 2. 200mm bodyshells fit on cars that are no wider than 200mm, which are usually nitro touring cars like the HPI Nitro 3 Evo. 1. Where can I buy HPI Racing RC cars?
There are many places stocking HPI RC cars all over the country. These include (depending on the country) nationwide retailers and specialised model shops, some of which also offer excellent mail order facilities. 2. Where can I drive the cars?
There are many places suitable for using RC cars. However we do not recommend that you use RC cars in built up areas, public roads, private land or where they could cause a danger to other people or animals.

3. What equipment do I need?
HPI RTR cars (Ready-To-Run) are pre-built and require minimal set-up before use. However you will still require some additional items before you can get going. Most HPI suppliers can supply a starter pack for your HPI car containing the essential items you’ll need. You will also require some simple tools such as: screw drivers or long nose pliers. See page 6 for more about RTR vs KIT.

4. What about the fuel?
HPI RC cars run on special model car nitro fuel, which is available from almost all HPI suppliers. Do not use any other fuel. Similar to real car fuel, precautions have to be taken for handling and storage of model car nitro fuel. Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines.

5. How long do they run?
One tank of fuel will normally give between 5–15 minutes of running time, then you can refuel in seconds and keep on running the car for as long as you like.

6. Can I run together with friends?
Yes of course, that’s half the fun. Our kits are available with 6 different frequencies and each box is marked with the frequency fitted to that car. Frequencies (referred to as crystals) can be changed very quickly and easily and are available from all HPI suppliers. There are up to 12 different frequencies available for use with your HPI radio equipment.

7. How fast do the cars go?
Very fast!!! HPI’s Stadium trucks reach top speeds of over 65km/h, and the big and durable Savage truck goes over 60km/h. On-road touring cars are even faster, over 80km/h. But for all the speed junkies out there, there is no real limit. With HPI option parts and tuning engines you can go even faster!

8. How far does the radio reach?
HPI RC cars can be controlled from up to 300 metres away! Interferences caused by the environment (like cars, fences etc.) might shorten the range.

9. What if I crash the car and it needs repairing?
No problem, HPI RC Cars are real model cars. Like real cars you can get every part as a spare part, so the car can be repaired, from a lost nut to a replacement engine. The manual included shows the construction of the car and part numbers in great detail easing repairs. You can either do repairs yourself or ask a model shop with a customer service centre to do it for you.

10. Where do I get spare parts or tuning parts?

11. What if I need help or the car does not work?
Many model shops are happy to give advice & help, plus HPI’s distributors have a team of trained engineers manning their customer service department for further back up. HPI offers an industry leading two year warranty to ensure that all component parts are free from defects in materials or workmanship during this period.

HPI high performance RC Cars are real model cars, and like real racing cars they do require some maintenance to ensure the best performance and reliability. With each HPI car we supply a user manual and HPI RC Cars DVD that show you in great detail how to get the best from your HPI RC Car.

13. Can I customise my car?
Absolutely! Again like real race cars a great range of option parts are available from HPI to give your car the personal touch, or make it even faster or stronger! You can also choose from a wide range of bodyshells to give your car a new look. Bodyshells are available pre-painted for convenience or clear so you can paint it in your own personal colour scheme.

HPI’s lead designer for their die-cast models is Yasuhiro ‘KJ’ Kajihara, an extremely experienced and highly regarded craftsman in the world of die-cast cars. KJ came to HPI from one of the most reputable die-cast firms in the world and heads-up the department, producing some of the world’s finest die-cast collectible model cars. KJ supervises nearly every step of the selection, design, prototyping and finish of each high-spec HPI die-cast model car. His devotion to his craft is plain to see when looking at any of the HPI range. Recently, staying true to its car fanatic heritage, HPI has moved into the 1:43 scale die-cast car market. This represents a bold and exciting direction for the company, and highlights once again the commitment to HPI’s vision. We know that the die-cast range of products will showcase the detail and excellence that HPI is known for!

PRECISION DESIGN & PRODUCTION

With the computer 3D drawings complete, a precise prototype model is created to study the final look of the die-cast car. Once approved by KJ, moulds are made and production begins. Every effort is made during each step of the production process to ensure all the unique features and details of the full size car carefully captured in the 3D models are present in the final product. The smallest attention to detail isn’t missed, including seat belts with logos and buckles. Dashboard sections are modelled on the actual racing cars. Aerials are made from wire for maximum realistic effect. Paint is colour-matched and decals are specific to particular racing events for exact realism. Rollbars, shock mounts, aerodynamic aids and even the underbody are given our full attention. Some models feature a detailed engine compartment, given the same importance as the rest of the model. For the truly discerning collector, the fit and finish of these die-cast collectibles are of premium importance.

NO LIMITS
To ensure the high quality of the diecast models and provide a unique opportunity for collectors, the production numbers for most models are strictly limited, some as low as 144 worldwide, making them highly collectible and extremely desirable. HPI Racing is not attempting to break into the mass market, as these numbers show - this line of die-cast models is intended to include no-compromise, high-quality representations of the real cars.

KJ and his team are able to work without any limits, so they can concentrate on extreme precision and top quality work. Each model is moulded from the actual car, based on the manufacturer’s original drawings and computer plans as well as detailed pictures taken personally by the designers. Each model then becomes an original work of art.

THE NEXT-GENERATION RALLYCROSS CONTENDER!
The all-new D8 takes rallycross racing to the next level. Taking everything we’ve learned about 1/8th buggy racing over the years and putting it all in one package wasn’t easy, but achieving greatness is never without pain. The D8 starts with a brand new chassis made from a solid chunk of 4mm thick 7075 aluminium, with 10 degrees of kick-up at the front end. The suspension hangs from the chassis without the help of e-clips, and is optimised for the modern range of 1/8th scale rallycross tracks, from rough and rutted minefields to big-air jumpfests. The centralised drivetrain keeps torque steer to a minimum and the chassis as balanced as possible for perfect mid-air adjustments. For extra durability, the D8 features the special HB spiral cut bevel gears on the diffs, so you have the peace of mind to really let it all hang out on the track. Super-large wheels take advantage of recent rule changes to give you maximum traction and zero sliding in the corners, while colossal 16mm Big Bore shocks tame the rough stuff, soaking up bumps and rough landings. Loaded with totally new parts, the D8 has plenty for racer geeks to drool over. The one-piece radio tray allows you to pop out all the electronics for fast and easy cleaning; the engine mount is also a one-piece design so you can remove the engine and not have to constantly reset the gear mesh. The extra large low-profile air filter has more surface area than previous designs to give the engine more space to breathe, letting you stay on the power! The D2 is set to conquer the electric 2WD buggy class! With track testing by World Champions and designed with strength, tuning, maintenance and compatibility in mind, the D2 will be the ultimate 2WD racer! The 7075-T6 aluminium main chassis serves as the backbone of the D2 and looks amazing. The battery tray machined into the chassis can fit 6 or 7 cell sub-C batteries as well as hard case Li-Po packs. Large thumbscrews secure the battery pack in place and you can easily alter the weight balance of the buggy for increased steering or more traction. At both ends, the D2 uses shocks from the D4 WCE kit, featuring hard-coated, threaded aluminium bodies with upper and lower threaded caps plus titanium nitride-coated shafts for long life and durability. Both shock towers are constructed of thick woven graphite and have 5 shock mount locations with 3 more mounts on the suspension arms, so you’ll have a huge selection of tuning options! For quick roll centre adjustments front and rear, you get vertical camber link ball studs, and titanium turnbuckles let you change camber and front toe settings easily. The extra-small 3-gear transmission features carbide diff balls and long-wearing components inside the diff, and CV-style driveshafts get all the power from the motor to the drive wheels. The sleek bodyshell is low-profile and futuristiclooking, with plenty of cooling slots and vents to keep your electronics cool with minimal disruption to airflow. The wing can be mounted either high or low to enhance traction or speed, depending on the needs of the track.
The D2 is based on an aluminium chassis - this solid chunk of lightweight 7075-T6 hardened aluminium is CNC-machined for absolute precision and forms the backbone of the D2. The batteries and steering components rest in milled-out areas for an extra-low centre of gravity, and the side rails, suspension and transmission all bolt securely to the chassis plate.

The Cyclone 12 is a totally fresh and inspired design that is created specifically for indoor circuit racing. With 100% Hot Bodies parts, the Cyclone 12 doesn’t use any recycled parts from any other supplier, and the double European and British Championship titles (2007 & 2008) make it the most successful debut for a 1/12th scale car ever! The Cyclone 12 main chassis is cut from a single sheet of lightweight & stiff 2mm thick woven carbon fibre and has cut-outs for reduced weight at the front end. The fresh and unique front suspension design features 3way adjustable reactive caster for the ultimate in modern pan car handling. Convenient clips are used to adjust the caster angle, making it quick and easy to try new suspension settings. The front wheels are held in place using metal locknuts for security and convenience. Securing the batteries in place is a tool-less battery strap system that uses moulded battery trays and unique hinged straps to provide you with safe and strong battery security. You can easily change the weight balance of the car, and the strap system makes replacing your batteries quick and easy - no messy tape and no tools! The Cyclone 12 has been a huge success since it debuted in early 2007, taking consecutive BRCA National Championship titles at the hands of Andy Griffiths, the ‘07 IIC title in Las Vegas and the ‘07 European Championship title with Andy Moore. In 2008 the winning ways continued with Teemu Leino taking the Snowbirds title in Florida and Marc Rheinard winning the European Championship title. The Cyclone 12 has been a winner from the very start, and we look forward to seeing it take more national and international titles!

Electric Touring Car

The first competition-level touring car that Hot Bodies produced was the Cyclone touring car. Starting from a ‘clean sheet’, HB designers took on the biggest, most established names in racing and came up a winner at the 2006-2007 IFMAR World Championships in Italy, with the UK’s Andy Moore taking home the biggest and most important trophy of his career. It wasn’t an easy journey, however it’s been a great run for Team HB, Andy winning the European Championship title in 2006 and German racer Ronald Volker winning in 2007, Ronald winning the massive ‘07 DHI Cup race and Andy taking the ‘07 TITC win. This year, we’ve got more top results with Danish racer Jonas Kaerup winning his national series and Atsushi Hara taking his first Reedy Race Invitational victory in the United States with the nearly all-new Cyclone TC.

1/10th Electric Off-Road

In the electric off-road classes, Team HB is coming on strong, with several potential future champions working their way up the rankings. We’ve already got the 2007 German National Champion title with the D4 through Benni Groschel, and more national awards are sure to come. At the World’s Warm-Up Race for the 2007 IFMAR World Championships, Japanese racer Hayato Miyazaki shocked the world by taking the pole position and overall win with the D4! We expect even more success once the D2 goes trackside. Hot Bodies racers and customers have come to expect great performance, rock-solid reliability and amazing cars, trucks and buggies, and we don’t disappoint. Once you start winning, it’s hard to stop!

The Lightning buggy was one of the first kits that Hot Bodies made available, and of course it’s had its share of success. Since its NORRCA National Championship title with Travis Amezcua in the United States, the Lightning has been a favourite buggy for club racers and bashers everywhere. In 2007 it took home its first international titles with Surikarn C and Atsushi Hara at the controls. Surikarn won the FEMCA Championship and Hara walked away with the JMRCA National Championship. With the all-new D8 racing buggy and more top off-road racers joining the ranks at Team HB, we’ll be expanding the trophy cabinet again very soon!
