NancyAguilar Mr.Otto U.S.History 2/7/13 DroptheBomb Whenyouseesomethingthatistechnicallysweet,yougoaheadanddoitandyouargueabout whattodoaboutitonlyafteryouhavehadyourtechnicalsuccess.Thatisthewayitwaswiththe atomicbomb,(J.RobertOppenheimer).TheUnitedStatesorganizedatasktodropanatomicbomb onanenemytargettoendtheSecondWorldWar.Theargumentsfororagainstdroppingtheatomic bombstillgoontoday.EveryonehasadifferentbeliefonwhytheUnitedStatesshouldhavedropped theatomicbomborwhyitwasamistaketodropit.DroppingtheatomicbombonJapaneseterritory wasundoubtedlythegreatestvictoryoftheUnitedStates.TheatomicbombendedtheSecondWorld Warimmediately,theUnitedStatesgainedmilitarysupremacy,anditcreatedeconomicadvantages.

AlthoughmanypeoplebelievethattheUnitedStateslosttheirhumanitybydroppingtheatomicbomb onJapaneseciviliansinHiroshimaandNagasaki,theUnitedStatesdesirednothingmorethantoprotect theirownpeople.Needlesstosay,theJapanesewerenottheonlypeoplewhodiedduringthewarand thewarhadtohaveanend. TheUnitedStatesdroppedtheatomicbombonJapantoendtheSecondWorldWar immediately.Afterthefirstatomicbombhadbeencreatedthefinaldecisiononwhereandhowtodrop thebombdependedonPresidentHarryS.Truman.Hestates,Scientificadvisorsofthecommittee reportedthatnotechnicaldemonstration,theymightpropose,suchasoveradesertedisland,wouldbe likelytobringthewartoanend.Ithadtobeusedagainstanenemytarget,(Doc1).President TrumansstatementindicatesthatthemostefficientmannertoendtheSecondWorldWarwastodrop theatomicbombonanenemy.Accordingly,theenemyoftheUnitedStatesatthetimewasJapansince

NancyAguilar Mr.Otto U.S.History 2/7/13 theJapanesehadattackedPearlHarboronDecember7,1941.PresidentTrumanknewthata demonstrationoftheatomicbombwouldntbeenoughtoendthewar.PresidentTrumanbelievedthat bydroppingtheatomicbombonJapan,EmperorHirohitoandhisgovernmentwouldsurrenderandthe warwouldendquickly.BeforedroppingtheatomicbombonJapan,thewarplannershaddifferent locationsonwheretodropit,butthefinallocationswerethendecided,whichwereHiroshimaand Nagasaki.Theselocationswerechosenbecauseneithercitiescontainedmajormilitaryorindustrial installations,andbecausepreviousbombinghadbeendoneonothermajorcitiesbefore.President TrumansinstinctregardingtheuseoftheatomicbombwascorrectbecauseonAugust6,1945the EnolaGaydroppedthefirstatomicbombonHiroshima.However,withtheuseofthefirstatomic bomb,HirohitodidnotsurrenderastheUnitedStatesexpected.Forcefully,thesecondatomicbomb wasdroppedonNagasakithreedayslateronAugust9,1945.WiththesecondbombJapanfinally surrenderedandtheSecondWorldWarendedefficiently. AfterthetwoatomicbombsweredroppedonJapan,theUnitedStatesgainedmilitary supremacy.TheUnitedStatesbecamethemostsuperiorcountryintheworld.Beforedroppingthe atomicbombonJapan,theInterimCommitteemembers,whotookroleintheapprovaloftheatomic bomb,madeclearthattheUnitedStateswouldbecomepowerfulbyusingthebombasanuclear weapon.TheInterimCommitteereported,usingtheatomicbombtoendthewarwouldmakethe SovietUnionmoremanageableinthepostwarworld,(Page2,Choices).ThereasonthattheSoviet Unionwouldbemoremanageableisbecauseduringthe1940stheUnitedStatesandtheSovietswere allies.BeforedroppingtheatomicbombonJapan,PresidentTrumanpressuredJosephStalin,the

NancyAguilar Mr.Otto U.S.History 2/7/13 leaderoftheSovietUnion,toenterwarwithJapan.However,theSovietsinterferenceinthewarwas notpossiblebecauseinthepast,aftertheSovietsendedthewarwithGermany,Stalinhadsigneda nonaggressionpacttreatywithJapan.AlthoughtheSovietswouldnotbeabletogotowarwithJapan, theUnitedStatesbackupwasobviouslytheatomicbomb.Withthesecuredatomicbomb,powerwas definitelyinthehandsoftheUnitedStates.PresidentTrumannolongerhadtoworryabouttheSoviets positioninthewarbecauseheknewthatnoothercountrycoulddefeatthem,sincetheUnitedStates wastheonlycountrywithanatomicbomb.TheUnitedStatessecuredapowerfulmilitaryafterthe SecondWorldWarendedbecauseeverycountryintheworldknewthattheUnitedStatescantake overanythingwiththeirnuclearweapons. OpponentsarguethatAmericansweresavagesfordroppingtheatomicbombonJapanese civilians.AlthoughnumerousJapanesepeoplediedwiththeexplosionoftheatomicbomb,theUnited StateswantednothingmorethantoendtheSecondWorldWartopreventfurthercasualties.The amountofdeathswereextremelyhighintheSecondWorldWar.Accordingly,statisticsstate,World WarIItotaldeathsapproximate:63,185,000,(WorldWarIIStatistics).Inaworldwarnooneissafe, meaningthatwhetherornottheUnitedStatesdroppedtheatomicbomb,millionsofpeoplewouldstill havediedbecausethewarwouldhavecontinued.Statisticsshowmillionsofpeoplewhoservedinthe war,aswellaswhodiedduringtheSecondWorldWar.Thequestionstillremainshowmanymore liveswouldhavebeenlostiftheUnitedStatesneverdroppedtheatomicbombonJapan?Theanswer ismanymoresoldierswouldhavebeenkilled.PresidentTrumanwantedtoknowthenumberof expectedcasualties,TheArmyNavyestimatefortheinvasionwasabout200,000American

AftertheeventsoftheSecondWorldWar,suchasthedropoftheatomicbombonJapan,the UnitedStatesgainedgrandeconomicadvantages.Duringthewar,JapanandtheUnitedStateswere enemiesbutsomehowbothcountriesmanagedtoworkthingsoutafterthewarended.Despitethe casualtiesthatbothcountriesencountered,theU.S.andJapanwereabletoforgeastrongdiplomatic alliance,(Jones).ItisamazingthatafterbeingenemiestheUnitedStatesandJapanturnedouttohave goodandstablerelationsaftertheSecondWorldWar.TheUnitedStatesgainedeconomicadvantages bytakingcontrolofJapan.TheUnitedStatesandJapanhadgovernmentnegotiations,thoseofwhich includedtheWorldTradeOrganization.TherelationshipbetweentheUnitedStatesandJapanhasbeen beneficialfortheUnitedStates,becausesincethentheyhavemaintainedgoodsourcesoftradewith eachother.ThefactthattheUnitedStatesdroppedtheatomicbombonJapanwasagoodideaafterall becausetheoutcomeswereeconomicallyadvantageousfortheUnitedStates. TheUnitedStatesendedtheSecondWorldWaraseffectivelyastheycould.Inreturn,withthe useoftheatomicbomb,theUnitedStatesmilitarybecamepowerfulandalsoseizedeconomical
