National Congress of Veterinary Medicine Students

FIRST NCVMS- 2005 The National Congress of Veterinary Medicine Students (NCVMS) was established in 2005 by the UP College of Veterinary Medicine-College Student Council led by the Chairperson Ms. Myra Hosmillo. The theme of the first congress was Diversity in Veterinary Practice, Broadening Horizons for FutureVets which was held on February 15 of the same year at the UPLB-CVM. The one-day event brought together veterinary student from across the country and also some of our countrys finest veterinarians including Dr. Salvador Escudero III, who served as one of the speakers for the congress. Also, the first NCVMS Executive Council Officers were elected giving way to the 2nd NCVMS. SECOND NCVMS-2006 The 2nd NCVMS was held on February 2006, also at the UPLB-CVM headed by the first elected national Executive Director, Ms. Mia Madel Alfaro from UPLB. The 2 nd congress carried the theme Beyond the Horizon: Challenges and Progress in Veterinary Medicine Through Time. The congress was made into a two-day event filled with interesting seminars. with topics including zoonotic diseases, handling and behaviour of wildlife in captivity , animal nutrition, aquaculture, molecular methods in veterinary medicine, acupuncture and ultrasonography, and bird flu. It also included a leadership training seminar to hone the leadership skills of the delegates. THIRD NCVMS- 2007 THE 3RD NCVMS was held on February 2007 and featured the theme The Filipino Veterinarians: Innovative Foundations for the Advancing Nation headed by National Executive Director, Mr. Maurice Jose Alcantara of UPLB. The 3rd Congress was also a two-day event with various seminar topics that included lectures on the crocodile and ostrich industries, swine small animal and equine practice. FOURTH NCVMS-2008 The 4th NCVMS with the theme, Filipino Veterinarians: Working Hand in Hand-Facing the Challenges of the Competitive World was held on February 2008 at the UPLB-CVM and was headed by Ms. Sherlyn Subiaga also from UPLB. The Congress was attended by a total of 8

universities namely the Benguet State University (BSU), Cagayan State University (CSU), Tarlac College of Agriculture (TCA), Pampanga Agricultural College (PAC), De La Salle-Araneta University (DLSAU), Cavite State University (CAVSU), Camarines Sur State Agricultural Coillege (CSSAC) and the University of the Philippines-Los Baos (UPLB). The seminar topics encompassed various fields in veterinary medicine like swine, wildlife, and small animal practice. Animal behavior was also tackled with well-known canine hehaviorist, Mr. Fred Alimusa as speaker. FIFTH NCVMS- 2009 Now on its 5th year, the NCVMS headed by Ms. Annabelle Apse of UPLB and by the UP CVM-College Student Council are again faced with the challenge of the continuing the NCVMS tradition. Filled with the same zeal and optimism, as their predecessors to continue a tradition of building bridges between veterinary students across the country.the Officers of the 5 th NCVMS and the UP-CVM College Student Council envisions a Congress that reaches out to all veterinary students from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. For this, the 5th NCVMS will carry the theme, Linking Todays Vet Students, Strengthening the Framework of Tomorrows Veterinary Medicine. The theme expresses the desire the unite vet students all over the country and it also foresees a country of future veterinarians, earnestly working together for the betterment of animal and human health towards a more progressive and a globally competitive nation. SIXTH NCVMS 2010 For the first time, the 6th National Congress for Veterinary Medicine Student was held outside the College of Veterinary Medicine University of the Philippines Los Banos. For its 6 th year, the NCVMS was sponsored by the CVMAS of De La Salle- Araneta University headed by Mr. William Kim B. Coo with the theme, Finding the Paths of Excellence, Strengthening the Foundations of Future Careers.The expectations were high as the objectives to foster camaraderie and fellowship among veterinary medicine students are being realized by hosting it to a different campus thus making the NCVMS reach out to other places. The 2010 NCVMS was a 2 day event participated by 10 veterinary schools in Luzon. It featured talks on small animal practice, equine industry, various diagnostic tools and farm animals. It also sponsored quiz contests for the delegates to pit their knowledge against the best of DLSAU. SEVENTH NCVMS- 2011 The NCVMS goes to the strawberry fields of La Trinidad, Province of Benguet. The College of Veterinary Medicine- Benguet State University hosted the 7th National Congress of Veterinary Medicine Students with the theme, DVM in Forum; Charting the Path, Establishing

the Future. Under the leadership of Mr. Paul Joseph Q. Abaya, the NCVMS executive officers and BSU- Veterinary Medicine Student Government sponsored a three day event featuring several seminars about the different fields of veterinary practice and highlighted by a talk from the PVMA president Dr. Rustan V. Patacsil. Other features of the event were quiz contests The 7th NCVMS furthered goals of the Congress by reaching out to all Veterinary Medicine institutions and solicited a good response having 14 schools sending delegates. Participants from Visayas (ASU and VSU) and as far as Bukidnon in Mindanao (CMU) came and attended. The culmination of the activity was a joint closing ceremony with the BSU- CVM Veterinary Medicine Week Celebration and highlighted by a cultural dance number to introduce the traditions of the Cordillera. This was also actively participated by the delegates having to showcase their dancing skills and proving that there is a Filipino in all of us.
