Discussion and Learning Guide for Single Subject Credential Program Handbook Preview the table of contents in a 1 minute

skim. 5 minute group discussion. Use the following questions to guide your discussion. What is your interest in reading this handbook? What are the most important sections for you to look at tonight? What will you look at this weekend in more detail? What do you think you might come back to often?

This weekend, as you read the handbook you will read some parts more carefully, others briefly to return to later more in depth. As you begin your journey into teaching, this first time through the handbook will serve as an introduction to the profession and expectations we have of teachers. A reference to the first time through the handbook indicates that you will be returning to it throughout your credential program. This guided group discussion is the beginning of becoming familiar with its contents. The following guide serves to help you focus on some key ideas and principles. Although the guide refers you to specific pages, we would urge you to have a look at other parts this weekend, as well (at least skim for now). 1. Silently, read the mission statement on p. 5 and identify six words from the mission statement that seem to be guiding principles for your teaching. Share your words with your group. 2. Read pp. 12-13 and draw a visual depiction of the programs organization as you understand it. Consider this a quick draw, web, flow chart, whatever makes sense to you. Show your picture to your group and explain the organizational structure of the program. (8 min.) 3. Read p. 18. KNOW the attendance expectations of your profession. Identify who in your group has experience with creating simple websites. This person will be a good resource for all of you. We will help you create your website in the fall, but knowing that you will need this skill both in the program and in teaching should motivate you to review your learning in EDUC 422 and/or pay close attention if you are taking the course this summer. 4. Read p. 22 and describe how you will work to establish communication with your cooperating teacher and other teachers at your school site. 5. The state of California regulates requirements for the teaching profession. Read p. 31 and make a note of items that you may be missing from your file. You will not be allowed to begin the program without all of these requirements in place for CPI. Once again, we urge you to have a look at the rest of the handbook so that you are familiar with the information available for everyone involved in supporting you in the coming year. Here are some suggestions: Look at the California Standards for the Teaching Profession (CSTPs) and note bold-faced headings on p. 7. This is what you will learn in the credential program. Pages 8, 9, and 10 indicate the corresponding Teacher Performance Expectations (TPEs) upon which you will be assessed throughout the program. Read pp.19-21 and write 4-6 sentences summarizing the field experience. Read the sections for On-site Liaisons, University Supervisors, and Cooperating Teachers so that you will know what their roles are in helping you to grow as a professional educator. Write 3-5 questions you have about the reading in the Handbook? Be sure to mark the place in the text where you have each question, or indicate the page as a part of your question. Peruse the forms indicated on p. 32
