NX Manufacturing with Basic Design Lesson Plan

Overview
Est. Time: .5 Hour(s) Day 1 of 5 (Morning)

Purpose This lesson defines some key terminology and standards for the class. Benefits This will be the preface for the rest of the week. This will give the base knowledge to the student as he/she continues through the class. General Notes to the Instructor In most cases, this is the first exposure to Education Services for our students. Make sure the students understand the methods and terminology we use in our courses. Suggested Approaches Use Graphical Representations List the objectives on a training board and add any objectives the students might want. Be reasonable in the additional objectives discussed. Mention other classes when those desired objectives are discussed in those other classes. Projector use the welcome slides when available for training center classes. On Page 13: Objectives These are the course objectives and should be discussed. Ask for input on more objectives that they might have had in mind coming to the class. On Page 17: How to Use This Manual Many of our courses use this same format so students should become familiar with it. On Page 16: Seed Parts The students will use Seed Parts several times throughout the course.

On Page 16: Colors The colors listed are the out of the box defaults. A new color pallette was introduced in NX3 where colors 1-15 are no longer reserved for the old legacy colors (blue, green, cyan, etc.) as well as a lighter, graduated background. The new default colors are implemented in many of the parts used in this class but there are still some parts that have not yet been converted. Supplementary Job Aids Welcome Power Point presentation. This varies depending on site of class. Best Practices Take your time; this is our first impression to students. It is equally important to set the expectations of this course; what will, and will not be presented. For those topics not presented in the course, begin selling the other courses and services, such as Learning Advantage, that we offer. Activities There are no activities in this lesson. Review Points The student should understand the importance of standards and Design Intent. They should also recognize the terms as used throughout the class.

NX Manufacturing with Basic Design Lesson Plan

Just finished the FCT of the NX4 NMF (Manufacturing Fundamentals with Basic Design) class in Milford this week (It was a success). There were 3 students in my class. Two professors (one from BYU and the other from Ivy Tech), the other student was from KB Racing. All had some limited exposure to the NX 3 modeling application prior to taking the NMF class. However none of them had any exposure to the manufacturing application. We were able to cover all of the Basic Design (CAD) portion of the class in 2-days including lessons 1 thru 3 in the work book. I also introduced them to sketcher and had them sketch a V-block, constrain and extrude it. The remaining 3 days were used to complete the Manufacturing Fundamentals (CAM) portion of the class. We got through all the material and finished at 1:00 PM (we did skip lunch however) on Friday. I know originally Mr. Bauer and I had some concerns about getting through all of the material in 5 days. This was not the case with this class. I did not have to cut out anything. With a larger class timing could be tight. I had a few problems with the system hanging/locking when I first entered the Manufacturing Application. Mark Berning made some adjustments to the image. Once he did that I had know problems. There were a few issues I found with the material. Files missing: edit_feature_3.prt (Activity- Editing Positional Form Features PG 4-43) In the Student Workbook Lesson 2 Open seedpart_in.prt file was not clear where to look/search for this file. Because the seed_mm.prt file is located in the parts folder, one might think that the seed_in.prt file would be there too just as it is in all of our other classes. It is however located in the Workbook folder which sort of makes sense because we are in the Workbook project when we access it. I guess what Im getting at we should either tell the student when they open the seed_in.prt what folder to look for or perhaps just put it in the parts folder right next to seed_mm.prt just as it is in all of our other classes. WATCH OUT: Student Guide Volume 1. Activity Cylindrical Faces and Datum Planes pg 5-26 Step 6 For those of you familiar with this activity in previous versions of PAU. It has been modified in NX 4 to accommodate the thru hole issue Jody and Garrett identified in previous emails I believe. When selecting the thru face for the 10 mm thru hole, you must be sure to select the datum plane that goes through the center of the part just as the activity describes. If you try to select the inside diameter/face as we previously did in this activity it will put a hole all the way through the part.

Type errors: Student Guide Volume 2. Activity Creating Drill Geometry Parent Groups pg 18-7 Step 1. reads Open the part file register Should read Open the part file register_mfg.prt

Step 1.thru 5 very difficult to make out/read input settings for dialogs. Type errors: Workbook Lesson 4 pg 4-1 Step 4. Sentence reads This will all the designed part to display in the drawing view. Should read This will allow the designed part to display in the drawing view. Step 7. scale (8.0833) should read scale (.0833)

The feedback I received from the students on this class was great. Hope this is useful information, Thanks to all who helped put this class together.
