One general form of the quadratic expression is:

ax + bx + c

2

()

the end term is the square of one-half the coefficient of the middle term.

Consider the Expression below where: ( a = 1, b = 6 and c = 9)

2

Incomplete squares

x 3

x + 6x + 9

9

First Term

The incomplete square can be viewed as a complete square with a portion removed. If we factorize this expression we get :

2 x + 6x + 9 =

( x + 3)

x 4

x + 8x

to make it a perfect

which is called a complete ( or perfect ) square because it can be visualized as a square with each side = (x + 3)

(x + 3) x 3x (x + 3) (x + 3)2 x2 3x x 3 9 3

Solution: a = 1, b = 8 , c = ?

where

( x +3 )( x + 3 )

= =

c= 4

2

()

b 2

x + 4x + 4

x + 10x +25

2 2

(8 2)

= 16

= =

( x + 2) ( x + 5)

Giving

2 x + 8x + 16 =

( x +4)

.. perfect square

x + 12x +36 =

( x +6)

Incomplete Squares contd In example1 , x 2+ 8x can be considered an incomplete square, where we showed that by adding 16, we could complete the square to create a perfect square). That is:

x +8x

Any general Quadratic expression in the form ax 2+bx+ c can be converted to a new form a ( x + h )2+ k by first expressing h and k in terms of a, b and c. The formulas for h and k are determined as shown below. Finding h and k

+16

= ( x +4)2

eqn 2

2 x +8x = ( x + 4)

- 16

8 b (h= ) = 2 2

ax 2 + bx +c ... eqn 1

Step Action

Factor a from the first two terms of eqn.1 Complete the square of

= ( x + 4) 2 42 = ( x +h)2 h 2

where

=4

Result

b 2 a x + x +c a

1

This is an important conclusion which may be generalized as follows:

2

2 2 2 x +bx = ( x +h) h where

2

(x+

h=

b 2

b b ) ( ) 2a 2a

3

This is known as completing the square;

*****************************************************

a ( x+

b 2 b 2 ) ( ) +c 2a 2a

a(x+

h= b =6 2

2 2

b ab ) 2+ c 2a 4a

2 2

in the form

( x +h) h

Simplify

b ab = a ( x + 2a ) + c 2 4a

2 2 b 4ac b = a( x+ ) +

2a

4a

x +12x = ( x +6) 6

2 2

= a ( x + h )2+ k

= ( x + 6) 36

( x + h) h

Compare k=

7 2

= 3.5 Giving: h = = =

( x 3.5) 3.5

2 2 2

x 7x

b 2a

and

k=

( x 3.5) 12.25

Example 4 Express

2 2 x + 7x 13 in the form ( x + h) +k

2x 7x +5

2

in the form

k a ( x + h )

( a = -2, b = - 7, c = 5)

b h= 2a

=

2

7 = 3.5 2

4 1(13 ) 7 41

2

h=

and

4ac b k= 4a

2

b 7 = 2a 4

4ac b 4a

2

= =

1.75

2

25.5

and

k=

42 5 (7 ) 4 2

= 11.125

so;

x +7x 13

= ( x +3.5)2 25.5

so:

2x 7x + 5

2

11.125 2 ( x +1.75 )

k ( x + h )

Practice questions:

Express in the form:

a ( x +h ) + k 1. 2.
