Research: Sthira-Dasa and Navamsa-Dasa During a period of nearly 25 years, I have become acquainted with quite a few predictive methods from different schools of Hindu astrology described in many thousands of slokas. While some of these methods appealed very strongly to me, other methods happened to be more or less rejected by me - at least for a period of time. However, by contemplating and thinking about this process, I became aware that I have been forming certain opinions and even sometimes objections regarding some of the slokas, which I had studied. Finally these opinions and objections have made me develop my special SSS-formulary regarding Hindu predictive methods. The SSS-formulary stands for Sound, Simple and Satisfactory. An astrological method must be sound, simple and satisfactory, as only then we should believe in it. Please let me explain this a little further: 1. It must be Sound. There should be no room for confusion, doubts and contradictions, and the method should be based on genuine, logical and well understood principles of the Hindu astrological tradition, and thereby be appealing to astrologers of sound judgment and powers of discrimination. 2. It must be Simple. The truth always displays a certain simplicity. If a method appears to be unnecessarily complicated or simply too ridiculous, or if there are too many rules of exceptions involved, then perhaps something is wrong or misunderstood about the basic principles... 3. It must be Satisfactory. Theory and practice must go hand in hand. The method should work well on the practical horoscopes and the results must be satisfactory - also if the method is used by a number of different Vedic astrologers. It is only fair to mention that I consider the Vimsottari Dasa to be a perfect example of an astrological method which is sound, simple and satisfactory according to this SSS-formulary, even though its deeper rationale is very difficult to grasp, and even though a number of its higher applications are still well guarded secrets, kept safe in the treasure house of certain ancient Sanskrit-texts. Anyway, my reason for mentioning my SSS-formulary is that I want to show exactly how four small verses from Jaimini-Sutras can be interpreted according to this SSS-formulary. The importance of these four sutras is in my opinion beyond imagination if in the hands of the right kind of astrologer.

The four Sutras The first four sutras of Part 2, Chapter 3 of Jaimini-Sutras are a description of how to calculate Navamsa-Dasa and Sthira-Dasa. These four small sutras are all that we have got, but being so pregnant with deep meaning, I believe they allow us to carefully dig out the complete explanation on how to calculate Navamsa-Dasa and Sthira-Dasa. Please let me explain the details about this.

Jamini-Sutras, Adhyaya 2, Pada 3 Sutra 1: Vishametadadirnavamamsah. If the birth falls in an odd sign, the Navamsa Dasas commence from it. Sutra 2: Anyathadarsadihi. In the even signs, the Navamsa Dasas commence from the Abhimukha Rasis. Sutra 3: Sasinandapavakahkramadabdahsthiradasayam. In the Sthira or fixed sign Dasa, the movable sign Dasa will be 7, the fixed Dasa will be 8 years and the Dasa of the common Rasi will extend to 9 years.

fixed and common signs. Following this method Sthira-Dasa and Navamsa-Dasa work together like the two pointers of a Clock. A number of practical experiments of mine have confirmed this to be true. it seems logical to assume that Sthira-Dasa starts from the SIGN occupied by Brahma. Raman’s book on JaiminiAstrology regarding Navamsa-Dasa: "My grandfather late prof. Therefore I believe the period of each Navamsa-dasa to be of ONE YEAR only. I think the very word Navamsa has a double meaning here by suggesting the dividing of not only the Rashi but also its Shoola-dasa-period by 9. whereas Navamsa-Dasa starts from the NAVAMSA occupied by Brahma. but when he is in an even sign. The Sthira Dasa commences from the Rasi occupied by Brahma. B. but I don't think so. while it is obvious that the periods in Sthira-Dasa should follow the special pattern of 7. Please also see the following sutra: (Adh. MY NOTES: I believe these four sutras as a whole give a kind of common explanation covering BOTH the Navamsa-Dasa and the Sthira-Dasa. But here we have to remember the difference that Navamsa-Dasa is based on Navamsa while Sthira-Dasa is based on Rashi. It only says pada 4. Suryanarain Rao used to tell me that Chara Dasa and Trikonadasa could be applied to all horoscopes and that all important human events could be timed with sufficient accuracy with the aid of Navamsa Dasa". Some people believe that the period of each Navamsa-Dasa is 9 years. But the original Sanskrit text does not specifically mention Sthira-Dasa.htm Sutra 4: Brahmadiresha. meaning that for the odd signs the order of the dasas is direct while for the even sign the order is in opposite direction or backwards. V. B. "If the Karaka occupies an odd sign. It does not say anything about WHICH dasa-system actually starts from the Brahma-planet! I therefore believe it is logical to assume that BOTH Sthira-Dasa and Navamsa-Dasa starts from Brahma. And it seems logical that this is related to the savya and apasavya movement in case of odd and even signs. What does that mean? Well. Similarities 1) It is clear from sutra 1 and 2 that for these two dasa systems it makes a difference if the starting dasa is an odd sign or an even sign. Sutra 31:) Swavaishamyeyathaswankramavyuthkramau. where Sthira-Dasa shows the broader timing and Navamsa-Dasa the precise timing of an event. Also I think we are being told very precisely about some similarities and some differences between these two unique dasa systems. Obviously the Brahma-planet is of the out most importance in the calculation of both Sthira-Dasa and Navamsa-Dasa. then proceed for the subsequent Dasas in the regular order. Therefore. then it seems logical to assume that Navamsa-Dasa is somehow based on Navamsa while Sthira dasa is based on Rasi (signs). since nothing else has been mentioned. 2) According to the English translation of sutra 4 the Sthira-Dasa starts from Brahma. so it goes for BOTH Sthira-Dasa and Navamsa-Dasa. meaning something like "it starts from Brahma". This is like a golden rule of Jaimini’s Rasi Dasas.Research: http://www. What does Jaimini Sutras have to say about this? 2 of 10 2/23/2012 12:17 PM . If this was true then there would be no difference between Shoola-Dasas and Navamsa-Dasa. then go backwards for the Rasi Dasas". Differences 1) If we take the differences first. 2) It also seems logical to assume that the dasa-periods in the Navamsa-dasas are of equal length. since each Shoola-dasa has got 9 years. 8 and 9 years in case of cardinal. Please also please see the following statement from Dr. 2.wandahl. we will now have to find out exactly how to identify Brahma.

MY NOTES: The planet having the highest number of degrees is called Atmakaraka and considered to be the strongest of the planets. Find out which is the stronger of the two Rasis.wandahl. Pada "The odd sign is stronger than the even according to its virtue". Sutra 46: Patabhyamyogeswasyatayorvarogetataha. I have seen different opinions regarding this with different Jaimini-scholars. sutra 11) Agrayattoviseshath. Lagna and Saptama or 7th. then the 6th planet counting regularly from the Sun will become Maheswara. 2. Chapter 1 of the Jaimini Sutras. he will be named as the Brahma planet. 4. Sutra 45: Swochheswabheripubhavesapranee. We therefore have to discriminate in a very careful and systematic manner from sutra 44 up to sutra 53 as to which information is related to Brahma and what is related to Maheswara. I will therefore give my personal notes in case of each sutra. Then find out which of the lords of the 6th. and in the even signs it is the 7th house. viz. which is considered to be a kind of Maraka or deathinflicting planet in Jaimini-astrology. or if the 8th from Atmakaraka has conjunction with Rahu or Kethu. the lords of the 8th and 12th from the Karaka will also go under the name of Maheswara. There seem to be minor errors in some of the sutras and in their English translation causing confusion and contradictions. If the lord of the 8th from Atmakaraka is exalted or is in his own house. sutra 4) Ojayugmayopranibalam. the definition of Brahma has to some extent been mixed together with the definition of Maheswara. MY NOTES: Always when we are being asked to find the strongest between the Lagna and the 7th house. Adhyaya 2. Please observe the following sutra: (Adh. Pada 1 Sutra 44: Swabhavesomaheswaraha.htm Researching Brahma Some explanations about how to identify Brahma can be found in Part 2. This is because the odd signs are considered to be stronger than the even ones in Jaimini-astrology. If Atmakaraka has conjunction with Rahu or Kethu. MY NOTES: Obviously this is a kind of exception-rule related to Maheswara. In Jaimini-astrology the stronger planet is always the one having more degrees. The lord of 8th house from Atmakaraka goes under the name of Maheswara. In odd signs it is the Lagna. MY NOTES: In case the 8th-lord is exalted or in own sign. Pada 3. Obviously the 8th-lord from him is nominated for Maheswara. 8th and 12th from it is stronger. Sutra 47: Prabhubhavavaireesapranee pitrulabhapranyanucharovishamastho brahma. but it is unclear if it means the lord of the 6th weekday from Sunday or if it means the planet occupying or ruling the 6th house from the Sun or perhaps even from Rahu or Ketu. "According to the Jaimini Sutras the planet which gets the highest number of degrees among others will become the most powerful". then the stronger of the two. and if he occupies an odd sign in the Parswa Rasis from the stronger of Lagna or Saptama (7th). If many get the powers of Brahma (say three or four planets at a time). since the planet next in degrees to Atmakaraka is the Amatyakaraka. They are two very different schools of thoughts. Not even in the "missing" 3rd and 4th parts of Jaimini-Sutras (Adhyaya. 8th and 12th house from Lagna or the 7th become Brahma. MY NOTES: 4 of 10 2/23/2012 12:17 PM . sutra 7) Saumyebhuyasa. "If other sources of strength are equal. but I think we should be very careful not to mix together Parasara and Jaimini. MY NOTES: This is confusing. But I don't think so. but I have never seen any sutra from Jaimini supporting this. the 6th planet from him will be designated as Brahma in which case the other three will not have the Brahma power. Sutra 48: Brahmanisanaupatayorvatataha. the English translation of this present sutra 48 seems to indicate that Jaimini was actually rejecting Rahu and Ketu as co-rulers of Aquarius and Scorpio . I don't think so. and therefore I believe it should be ignored. then the conjunction of a larger number of planets gives greater strength". Susil Kumar Kar's rare translation. But this doesn’t make sense. then that planet becomes Brahma who is next in degree to Also please observe the following sutra: (Adh. published by Raman Publications in 1955. If Sani. and it need not necessarily be the 6th. I such case we are told that the planet next in degrees to Atmakaraka becomes Brahma. In the present sutra the information that the 6th planet from him will be designated as Brahma seems to be somehow a mix up with sutra 46 about Maheswara. which I consider to be a very important piece of information. some scholars are of the opinion that Rahu and Ketu are actually co-rulers of Aquarius and Scorpio in Jaimini-astrology. If Brahma has to be in an odd sign above the horizon. Pada least in connection to Brahma. 2. When Rahu also gets Brahmatwa. Since Brahma will be the strongest among the 6th. The only logical interpretation of this sloka must be that out of the 2-3 nominated candidates the one having more degrees will become Brahma. It seems much more likely to me that this part of the sutra is somewhat defective. and given to me as a photocopy by an old Jaiminischolar in New Delhi back in 1990. then the conditions will be reversed.htm Jaimini-traditions. Rahu or Kethu becomes Brahma. we will always get 2-3 planets nominated as candidates for Brahma. even though they may look similar to a certain extent. Then we are informed that the strongest of the lords of the 6th. However. it is mentioned in Parasara Hora that Rahu and Ketu are co-rulers of Aquarius and Scorpio. Parswa Rashis mean the six signs above the horizon. But this is completely ridiculous. 3 & 4) which I have got in Mr. Rahu and Ketu can NEVER become Brahma. Anyway. Sutra 49: Bahunamyogeswajateeyaha. Some scholars are of the opinion that the strongest planet will be the one in conjunction with more planets. Why are Rahu and Ketu being mentioned? Well. then half of the horoscopes in the world would be completely without Brahma.Research: http://www. The strongest of them is the one having more degrees (please see my notes to sutra 45). since the conjunctions of more planets are only considered to be a secondary source of strength according to Jaimini. and therefore simply to be ignored.wandahl. Then finally we are also told that Brahma should occupy "an odd sign in the Parswa Rasis".

I think this is once again additional information regarding Maheswara. The lord of the 8th from Atmakaraka as also the planet who occupies that house becomes Brahma. would they? Sutra 52: Vivadebalee. By carefully comparing the sutras regarding Brahma with those of Maheswara. then out of the 6th-. Yet this sloka says: Rahuyogevipareetam. then Brahma and Maheswara would hardly be defined as the very same planet by Jaimini. perhaps since Rahu is always retrograde. The longevity extends through the Rasis commencing from Brahma and counting upto the Rasi containing Maheswara. the one having more degrees. it is finally possible to formulate a few sound and simple rules for easy reference on how to identify the Brahma-planet and how to calculate the Sthira-Dasa and the Navamsa-Dasa. but there seem to be an element of truth in it. Calculating Sthira-Dasa and Navamsa-Dasa Following the deductions already given regarding the Brahma-planet and the two dasa-systems we are now finally able to conclude the following sound. MY NOTES: Here we are really being sent on a wild goose chase. 2) In the even signs. which I will show in a practical example later on. minutes and seconds in the sign occupied by him will become Brahma. the stronger of the two becomes Brahma. after excluding Saturn. Between the two planets the lord of the 8th from Atmakaraka and the planet who joins the 8th. Also please observe that the content of sutra 53 becomes self-contradictive if sutra 51 is supposed to define Brahma.Research: http://www. MY NOTES: This is a general rule about longevity.or 12th-lords from the Ascendant.except in the English translation.wandahl. But nothing has been mentioned in the sutra itself about Brahma . minutes and seconds in the sign occupied by him will become Brahma. Perhaps by a simple mistake somebody has written Brahma instead of Maheswara by error while copying the original manuscript. after excluding Saturn. Rahu and Ketu. Sutra 53: Brahmano yavanmaheswararkshadasantamayuhu. indicating that in connection to Maheswara the degrees of Rahu should be counted in the opposite direction from the end of the sign. My objection is like this: If longevity goes from Brahma to Mahesware. simple and easy rules: Brahma 1) In the odd signs. based on the above observations. Rahu can NEVER become Brahma.or 12th-lords from the seventh house. the one having more degrees. 5 of 10 2/23/2012 12:17 PM . it can be observed that Maheswara is defined exclusively from Atmakaraka while Brahma is defined from Lagna itself. which makes very good sense. meaning something like "opposite or reverse in case of combination with Rahu".com/Pages/SthiraDasa. and how to make predictions from these two unique dasa-systems.
