VFW POST 670

10 June, 2013

COMMANDERS CORNER
few months. Our largest event the APA pool tournament, is from 15 May thru 15 June. I cant thank the volunteers in the kitchen and behind the bar enough for your hard work and dedication. I would also like to thank the Fayetteville APA League for allowing us to host the tournament.. It generates a lot of needed revenue for the post. Our post is in a desperate need for volunteers on the Friday Night cooking teams. We are currently down to 3 Teams. This leaves one week a month unmanned. Our steak nights are an awesome opportunity to serve our community. Please sign up with our Kitchen Manager Kelly Hargrove. Dear Comrades, Ladies and Friends, As many of you know my name is Bryan Hargrove and I am very proud to part of the 20113-14 Post 670 command team, I hope that our newsletter will become an important part of informing our members no matter where they are and make you smile all at the same time. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our outgoing Comrade and Ladies Auxiliary Officers. Your hard work and dedication were paramount to the success of our post. I would also like to specially thank Jerry and Eve Moser for their unwavering support and hard work as the Post Command team. Our volunteers have been incredibly busy the last The incoming Post Officers are itching to get started and are looking for ideas and improvements from the post membership. We would like to plan and execute three events this year that would both benefit the post and a charity of the memberships choice. I am looking forward to hearing your ideas and making this year a fun and productive experience. Please come the meetings and events you deserve to be heard! Our post will also be doing membership and Buddy Poppy drives throughout the year. Please come out and help the post. We need your support to improve the post and more importantly help veterans. The SGT Ambrose R Williams Post 670 was chartered in 1933. Third son of Arthur and Atellia (John D, Arthur Jr. Steven) and four sisters. During the Spanish-American War in 1898, the Fayetteville Independent Light Infantry (FILI) was called into National service for Cuban duties. Cpl Ambrose R. Williams, assigned to Co A, 2nd Regiment, didnt see action, however, later in June 16, 1916, departed Fayetteville, NC along with the Mexican border to battle Villa, August 30, 1900, FILI Shooting contest, 4th prize, awarded to the shooters with the lowest scores, was contended for by PVT Gordon Jessup, Ambrose Williams, and C.L. Jones. All three scored five goose eggs. Each contestant was allowed one shot in shooting off the tie. The score again stood zero for each man. It being the unanimous verdict that none of them could hit the side of a house at 10 paces. The contestants mutually agreed to waste no more ammunition but to settle the question by drawing straws. The man drawing the shortest straw was to be considered the poorest marksman in the company and to receive the prize; a small wooden gun. The prize was awarded to Ambrose. After his tour of duty with the military, Ambrose became one of the most beloved members of the Fayetteville Police Department, serving thirteen (13) years as a night desk sergeant prior to his death. Ambrose R. Williams passed this life on May 30, 1933. His place of rest is at the corner of Grove & Ann streets.

Holly from Legends Pub is a huge supporter of our VFW, the community, and veteran causes. Recently Legends allowed us to help them raise money for the Cumberland / Hoke County Kidsville Magazine. Legends raised more than $7000 during their 3 Day Spring Fling event. Legends Pub and the Gypsy Women have run numerous events in the recent past. The Gypsy Women raised $5,000 for Breast Cancer awareness and use portions of that money to help local women get mammograms. Thanks you Legends and Holly, for all you do for our community.

THE PITCH
VFW membership is one of the largest challenges for any post. With that said both the Comrade and Ladies Auxiliary line officers believe its our number one priority this upcoming year. We need your help. We need ideas and events that will entice the 36,000 OEF/OIF Veterans and Families of Fort Bragg to our post. We also need to recruit and retain new members. Please don't forget to renew your dues as well. We need you more than ever. The Comrades Junior Vice, Josh Holt, is one of our newest members and has stepped up to take the position of Membership Committee Chairman. Josh, Bryan, and Jerry Have be appointed to the committee. We could always use more ideas and participation in the committee. Please help us help the post. Email your questions or suggestions to vfwpost670@gmail.com or call 910-916-4998. The Ladies Auxiliary are also looking for more members to participate in membership drives or just good ideas. Contact Kelly Hargrove for more information. Bring one new member to the post and your bring one new member to the fight for our benefits, advocacy, and way of life.
Becoming a Legacy Life Member enables current Life Members to leave a lasting impression on our great organization. Its not the price you paid for dues its the price you paid for eligibility. Contact Josh Holt for more information
