Volume 31 Monday June 24, 2013 kimberleychronicle@gmail.com Welcome to the 31st issue of Kimberley Chronicle! Some of our astute readers were quick to find our error last week. The picture we printed of the Orpheum Theatre was taken in 1949 not 1924, there were two Orpheum Theatres in Kimberleys history, one opened in 1924, the other in 1949. In this issue we have an amazing story of a family herding hundreds of sheep across the Rose Pass. We asked all kinds of people and scoured museums and the internet, but we could not find any photos of this event. So instead we have pictures of three of the actors that will be taking part in the Kimberley Summer Theatre. There is a quick biography of each actor on pages 3 & 4. If any of our readers do happen to have a picture of the Eppard Sheep Drive or of Doris and Marguerite Dakin or Mabel McKay please let us know, wed love to print one of those.

Three Pretty Girls and a Couple Hundred Sheep

It turned out to be a pretty exciting summer for three young ladies from Kimberley in 1934. Doris and Marguerite Dakin and Mabel McKay had been planning a trip over Rose Pass on horseback for some time. The fact that nobody had gone over the pass in years did not deter them one bit; if a family could herd 600 sheep over the pass, then surely they could make it on horseback. The Eppard Family were the sheep herders in question. They had left the dusty Saskatchewan prairie for greener pastures out west and decided to take the herd with them. They created quite a stir in town when they announced that they would be taking the herd up and over Rose Pass. Apparently the gravel highway was too dusty at the time and was causing the sheep some health problems. The shepherds left Kimberley on August 2 for the 50 mile (80km) trip to Crawford Bay. It was not an easy trip. With loads of dead trees across the trail and Devils Club everywhere, the Eppards slowly made their way to the West Kootenays. The three youg ladies left Kimberley four days after the Eppards on horseback armed with only a .22 rifle and caught up with them by the afternoon of the first day. They helped the Eppards chop trees off the trail for a few days; one day they only made it a quarter of a mile after chopping over 60 trees some of them up to 3 feet in diameter. The girls continued up the Office Cabin, which was at the top of Rose Pass where they would sleep and then come back down in the day to help clear the trail. After they had eaten all of the food that was stashed at the cabin they decided to make a break for Crawford Bay. By the time they got off the ferry in Nelson the ladies were minor celebrities. Their familes assumed they were lost and had sent word to Nelson looking for the girls. They enjoyed the attention and had a blast at some dances and parties before deciding to head home. continued

Doris, Mabel and Marguerite smartly decided that they would not take Rose Pass all the way home to Kimberley. They did however decide to hike some food and supplies up to the Eppards before heading home. Not even five miles from Kootenay Lake they found a group of West Kootenay guys turned around on the trail who were quite upset that they could not make it up and over the trail that three Kimberley girls had crossed. The Eppards were excited to get some much needed supplies and the girls eventually said their goodbyes before heading down to Creston then back up to Kimberley. The Eppards eventually made it to Vernon where they bought a farm and continued to raise their sheep.

Summer Theatre Stars and Starlets

Brent Gill has performed on stages all across Canada, from BCs Sunshine Coast to the Eastern Townships of Quebec and numerous memorable places in between, but there truly is no place like home! Originally from Cranbrook, Brent is a proud graduate of the BFA Acting program at the University of Alberta. Credits include: The Big League (Manitoba Theatre for Young People, Winnipeg); Evil Dead: The Musical (Hit & Myth Productions, Calgary); whisper (Catalyst Theatre/Studio Theatre, Edmonton); Cymbeline, Fuddy Meers (Studio Theatre, Edmonton); Beauty and the Beast, Calamity Jane (Carriage House Theatre, Cardston AB); Pride and Prejudice (Centennial Theatre, Sherbrooke QC); Fort Steele Follies (Wild Horse Theatre, Fort Steele BC) and three seasons here with Kimberley Summer Theatre. Brent has also done extensive voice-over work for both television and radio, and was a featured character in the award-winning video game Mass Effect 3 (EA Games). Lots of love to Mom & Dad, family, friends and Kelsey. Fiona McIntyre grew up in Vancouver but is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre at Montclair State University, just outside of Manhattan. Previous credits include 13 the Musical (Lucy) at the Vancouver International Fringe Festival (2010 Pick of the Fringe), the 2013 Childrens Resources Dance Industrial in Miami, Florida, Joseph... Dreamcoat with RCMT, a workshop of the new musical Franklin Falls at The Arts Club, the 2010 Olympic Closing Ceremonies and Annie (Duffy) with Gateway Theatre. Last summer she traveled to Toronto and Barbados to work with Andrew Lloyd Webber as a Top 20 Finalist on CBCs Over The Rainbow. Shed like to thank Kimberley Summer Theatre for giving her the chance to come back to Canada for the summer- there really is no place like home.

Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson were going camping. They pitched their tent under the stars and went to sleep. Sometime in the middle of the night Holmes woke Watson up and said: Watson, look up at the sky, and tell me what you see. Watson replied: I see millions and millions of stars. Holmes said: And what do you deduce from that? Watson replied: Well, if there are millions of stars, and if even a few of those have planets, its quite likely there are some planets like Earth out there. And if there are a few planets like Earth out there, there might also be life. And Holmes said: Watson, you idiot, it means that somebody stole our tent.
