Agro-food sector relevance in Friuli Venezia Giulia Region (Italy) From a morphological point of view the Friuli

Venezia Giulia (FVG) Region land surface is 43pc mountainous, 38pc level and 19pc hilly. The existing gap between mountains and plains areas is still evident, not only as regards agriculture, but also from a socio-economic infrastructure and productive activities as a whole. The agricultural land use in the FVG reaches 230 thousand hectares, representing 29pc of the regional territory. Registered agro-food enterprises in FVG were 1,058 in 2009 (ISTAT data), of which over half are placed in the province of Udine. The Region agriculture occupies approximately 8,300 employees (ISTAT data related to 2009); 54 percent are self-employed. The regional agricultural sector has faced a steady decrease in employment in last decade, determining the loss of almost half of workers in the primary sector. Among the factors that have contributed to the cut of the employed in agriculture it should be considered the closure of less productive firms and the broad farm difficulty in technological and equipment innovation. Nevertheless, the decline in agricultural employment on one hand and output growth on the other hand have given a better capacity to produce income from the regional primary sector. 2007 data on value added to GDP at regional level see less than a 2pc agriculture, forestry and fishing quota, compared with the 26pc to 72pc of industry’ and services’. The contribution of agriculture to the formation of value added can be assessed as an indicator of agricultural specialization: from this point of view, the Friuli Venezia Giulia is being the fourth among the eight North Italian regions that can show up a macro-economic specialization of the agricultural sector. Nevertheless, the value added to GDP from agriculture on the overall economy has decreased in last decades mainly due to a slower growth rate respect to the other economic sectors. The regional agriculture sector has three production drivers; animal husbandry (37pc of the value of production in agriculture, of which 22 pc are meat and 14 pc milk), crops (18 pc) and wine (11 pc) (ISTAT 2010 data). Other sub-sectors of some interest are fruit farming, fishing and aquaculture and biological productions. Following the statistical data for 2010, FVG agro-food sector exported products of a value of 472.0 million euro (mainly to EU-27 market 69 pc).
