Catholic Charities USA Presents Social Innovation Awards to Catholic Charities Agencies in the Diocese of Hartford, Connecticut, and Providence, Rhode Island Agencies win regional awards recognizing their socially innovative programs Alexandria, VA – Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA) presented CCUSA’s Social Innovation Awards to Catholic Charities Archdiocese of Hartford’s El Centro De Desarrollo y Reafirmacion Familiar and the Diocese of Providence Office of Community Services & Catholic Charities’s Cabrini Program during the CCUSA Partners in Excellence Regional Gathering event that was held in Portland, Maine this week. The CCUSA Social Innovation Award recognizes successful socially innovative programs being managed by Catholic Charities agencies across the country. The inter-generational program at El Centro De Desarrollo y Reafirmacion Familiar (El Centro Family Center), run by Catholic Charities Archdiocese of Hartford, connects young children from its preschool and seniors from its Hispanic Senior Center. By building a physical space to accommodate both younger and older generations, the program utilizes the experience of seniors to assist young children entering school without the skills necessary to succeed. The Diocese of Providence Office of Community Services & Catholic Charities’s Cabrini Program helps working parents afford child care by targeting families whose income is just above eligibility for state-assisted child care. Without the Cabrini Program, these families could face tremendous financial difficulty obtaining child care and keeping a job. Over the past 6 years, the program has helped over 700 families achieve stability in providing for their children. Two awards will be presented at each of the 20 regional gatherings taking place across the country in 2013 and 2014. Recipients of the award each receive $5,000 (five thousand dollars) that must be reinvested in the award-winning program. Award nominations were judged jointly on a set of predetermined criteria by CCUSA network members and the Gigot Center for Entrepreneurship, at the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business..
