Placido, I am almost speechless. State Sen. Wendy Davis did it! The sweeping anti-abortion bill that would have decimated women’s rights in Texas was defeated last night, thanks to Sen. Davis’s heroic 13-hour filibuster that she completed against all odds. Right-wing Republicans threw every ridiculous thing they could at her -- trying to catch her in “mistakes” that would have ended her filibuster because the rules around the filibuster are so strict. When Sen. Davis mentioned a previous law about sonograms, Republicans tried to say she was going off topic, which is not allowed. When another lawmaker helped Sen. Davis with a back brace after she had been on her feet for many hours, Republicans tried to say she was violating the rule against “leaning” on anything during the time she held the floor. In the last 15 minutes, as the clock ticked down to the midnight deadline, Republican senators

scrambled to ram through the vote on the bill. But at that point, pro-choice Texans in the gallery took over the fight, disrupting the vote counting past the midnight deadline in what some cal led a “people’s filibuster.” Of course, that wasn’t the end of it -- Republicans then tried to cheat by changing the timestamp on the votes, which were tallied after midnight on June 26, to before midnight on June 25. But the audacious attempt to rig the vote was transparent, so after deliberating and apparently determining that they couldn’t get away with it in the end, the bill was declared dead and Sen. Wendy Davis and her supporters had won the day. Truly amazing…

If you have not done so already, please sign our note thanking and supporting Sen. Davis for her heroism.
Thank you if you already signed. And thank you for your ongoing support! -- Ben

Filibuster in Progress Against the Right's War on Women -RIGHT NOW
Add your name to the note thanking Sen. Wendy Davis for, and encouraging her in, her heroic 13-hour filibuster against a sweeping abortion ban in Texas,

Placido, going on right now. Texas State Senator Wendy Davis is all that stands between her state and one of the most sweeping abortion restrictions in the country -one that could close nearly every one of the state’s abortion clinics. RIGHT NOW, Sen. Davis is in the middle of a heroic 13-hour filibuster on the floor of the Texas Senate to run out the clock on the special session and ensure the demise of the bill, which has already passed in the House and which Gov. Rick Perry is sure to sign if it passes the Senate. After you sign, call her office... and watch video of her filibuster live

Sen. Davis needs our support! Please sign our note to Sen. Davis now thanking her for her epic stand. Then, after you sign, call her office to show your support. The filibuster rules are so strict that Sen. Davis must remain standing the entire 13 hours and can’t even lean on a desk. She is reading personal testimonies of women who have undergone abortions to fill up her time. Whether she completes the task or not, she deserves our gratitude for the effort -- and our encouragement now. Please join us in cheering her on and saying “thank you.” Sen. Davis’s stand against the Republican War on Women in her state is so inspiring. And the righ twing, anti-choice extremism she is up against is fierce. The Republican state rep who sponsored the anti-choice bill, Rep. Jodie Laubenberg, is among those zealtots like Todd Akin and U.S. Rep. Trent Franks pushing pseudoscience in their crusade against women’s rights. She believes having an exemption in the law for victims of rape and incest is unnecessary because these women have already been "cleaned out" by emergency room "rape kits." Show your support for Texas State Sen. Wendy Davis now! THANK YOU, Ben Betz, Online Strategy Manager | privacy policy | subscribe | unsubscribe | contact us |
