Not Your Mother’s Book series

V13. 2-19

Each title in the Not Your Mother’s Book series contains approximately 60 real-life stories dedicated to a unique theme, drawn from the passion and experience of dozens of writers in a whimsical and entertaining mix of irreverence and humor. Founded by former coauthors and editors of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, this similarly styled anthology series foregoes the sad, sappy, preachy, or death-oriented stories that were that series’ hallmark, and unlike that series, is never afraid to be a little risqué. These stories are funny, daring, different, and smart. Dahlynn McKowen and Ken McKowen have a combined 60 years in the publishing industry, mostly as travel writers and authors with nearly a million books sold. They coauthored many Chicken Soup for the Soul books and were also paid consultants and editors for Chicken Soup for the Soul Enterprises, Inc. They are also the authors of the award-winning Best of California’s Missions, Mansions and Museums and the Wine Wherever series of winery-destination books. They live in Orangevale, California.

•Black Mask, the popular pulp magazine, was published from 1920 to 1951 and launched the careers of Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler, among many others •This edition of Fast One includes an introduction and bonus essay, both of which explore what might have driven the author to hide his true identity throughout his life Billed as “the most hard-boiled novel of the 1930s” and featuring one of the most brutal finales in crime fiction history, some say this lost 1933 masterpiece took hard-boiled crime writing too far. In the last days of Prohibition and the first days of the Depression, East Coast crime bosses are vying for control of Los Angeles. Caught in the middle of the intrigue is Gerry Kells, a former New York enforcer now living a life of ease on the West coast. As the fiercely independent Kells rejects the appeals of various crime bosses who want to make use of his talents, powerful forces align against him. Being framed for a murder turns out to be the least of his troubles and as the stakes get higher, and the odds get longer, it’s only Kells’ nerve and toughness that keep him one step ahead of the law—and the reaper. “In the matter of grim hardness Dashiell [Hammett] paused on the threshold. Paul [Cain] went all the way.” —Captain Joe Shaw, editor of Black Mask during its golden era “Fast One represents] some kind of high point in the ultra hard-boiled manner.” —Raymond Chandler, author, The Big Sleep Paul Cain was a writer of crime stories who was chosen to replace Dashiell Hammett at Black Mask magazine in the early 1930s. As Peter Ruric, he maintained an equally successful career as a screenwriter, such as for the Boris Karloff horror classic, The Black Cat.

•John D. MacDonald's popular Travis McGee series includes 21 novels, published between 1964 and 1984, and each one incorporates a color into its title (e.g. The Deep Blue Good-by, Nightmare in Pink, A Purple Place for Dying, etc) •In 1972, MacDonald was named a grandmaster of the Mystery Writers of America, and he won a 1980 U.S. National Book Award in the Mystery category Tal Howard, a disillusioned Korean War veteran, breaks away from his old life, looking for answers. He’s convinced he’s going to find them in the small town of Hillston, the location of 60 grand in embezzled funds that Howard learned about from a dying friend in a POW camp. He just needs to find out where the money is hidden and contend with another former POW who has come looking for it—Earl Fitzmartin, a psychopath of whom they were all terrified in the camp. Howard soon learns that the secret to the money’s location lies in the dead man’s past, which must be discovered through the women he knew, such as the respectable Ruth Stamm and the sultry and dangerous Toni Rassele. Now featuring a new biography of John D. MacDonald and an essay exploring the paperback revolution of the mid-20th century, this early novel by a crime writing legend features classic hard-boiled writing, brutal action, tough characters, and a plot in which no one is spared. “[John D. MacDonald was] the great entertainer of our age, and a mesmerizing storyteller.” —Stephen King “My favorite novelist of all time.” —Dean Koontz “To diggers a thousand years from now, the works of John D. MacDonald would be a treasure on the order of the tomb of Tutankhamen.” —Kurt Vonnegut John D. MacDonald is considered by many to be the premier pulp novelist of the 1950s and ‘60s. He is the author of The Executioners, which has been made into two Hollywood blockbusters as Cape Fear, as well as the Travis McGee mystery series, one of the best-loved fiction sagas of all time.

•Coauthor Dave Shields' previous titles have sold more than 10,000 copies •While the declaration that 50 percent of all marriages in America end in divorce is close to the truth, in actuality this varies depending on the age of the couple and whether the couples have been married before •The organization Americans for Divorce Reform believes that a rate of 40–50 percent is a projection that could be avoided with new and updated laws pertaining to divorce Rethinking the entire legal process of marriage, which is built upon bad laws and old traditions, this revolutionary plan makes a series of simple, yet logical, adjustments to the order and manner in which things are currently done. By shining a brilliant light upon the factors that have caused marriage to fail and divorce rates to skyrocket, the resulting process takes on the power to dramatically increase the satisfaction level within a marriage throughout the duration of the experience. With society evolving at an unbelievable pace and new technologies giving us instant access to information, the institution of marriage is simply not keeping up, and millions of people are prevented from reaching their highest potential. By introducing the concept of “term limits” into a marriage contract, these changes and the development of individual freedoms are more widely considered in the drawing of an agreement—arguably the most important relationship a person will enter in their lifetime—that has ironically been almost void of thought at inception. The system introduced in this book examines the objectives of marriage and creates an arrangement to support, rather than undermine, those goals, at a time when the definition of marriage could not be more critical. $20,000 marketing budget Brad Brown is a successful businessman who conceived of the Term Limits concept as the result of research and life experiences including two failed marriages. Dave Shields has written numerous articles for newspapers and magazines and is the author of three novels, The Pendulum’s Path, The Race, and The Tour. They both live in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Professor Stephen Hawking declared in his book The Grand Design in 2010 that the universe was created as a result of the law of gravity, and that the role of a creator was unnecessary Taking an unflinchingly realistic look at the global crises we face, yet offering empowerment and hope instead of grim despair, this powerful new narrative transforms the cold, scientific facts of the universe into a soulful story of creation that is reminiscent of humanity’s stories of the ages. Told through a dialogue between a seeker and his sage, the worldview developed here transcends dogma and belief, giving readers a new way to reconnect with the cosmos. Human history is grounded into the larger history of the universe, revealing a context for understanding how humanity has created these global crises and what we can do about them. Through the dialogue, the seeker realizes his importance in the larger story and finds his path in the midst of the turbulence of our times.

The original edition of Flying Saucers Are Real sold more than 500,000 copies Presented for a new generation, this thrilling reprint of the very first book-length investigation into the UFO phenomenon follows in the pulp tradition of the original 1950 pressing, which sold more than half a million copies. Rumored to be the inspiration for the character of Fox Mulder of The X-Files, leading ufologist Donald Keyhoe delivers the results of his groundbreaking research in a style that is at once terse and businesslike, imbued with a sense of wonder at the mysteries and possibilities he is confronting. Keyhoe argues that aliens—whatever their origins or intentions—do not seem hostile and have likely been surveilling the Earth for 200 years or more, though Keyhoe writes that their “observation suddenly increased in 1947, following the series of A-bomb explosions in 1945.” This stunning work of nonfiction touched off everything we associate with the UFO phenomenon today—the widespread paranoia, the government disinformation campaigns, and the inevitable conclusion, for many people the world over, that UFOs exist and do not have an Earthly origin. Donald Keyhoe was an American Marine Corps naval aviator, writer of many aviation articles and stories in a variety of leading publications, and manager of the promotional tours of aviation pioneers, especially of Charles Lindbergh. He became well-known as a UFO investigator, and was widely regarded as the leader in the field of ufology in the 1950s and ‘60s.

By asking if each illustration shows an insect before providing information on each animal and how its characteristics do or do not classify it as an insect, the book encourages readers to participate, from counting the number of legs a creature has to identifying its body parts. Finishing with a summary of all insect characteristics, it asks the reader to decide if a snail is an insect based on what they have learned throughout the book. The inquiry style demonstrated throughout has been shown to be one of the most effective ways of engaging readers in the subject material and to teach children scientific thinking, making it easy for them to find characteristics of insects without without adult assistance. $30,000 marketing budget Kristine Duehl has a PhD in biology with a specialty in plant-insect interactions. She is trained in inquirybased science education and has published peerreviewed articles on the subject. She lives in Davis, California. Katy Castronovo is an artist and illustrator who uses a variety of techniques in her work, including photography, painting, drawing, and carving. She lives in Iowa City, Iowa.

•Biome is another word for ecosystem •This series is different from any other series because it is the only inquiry-based series that teaches children how to think like scientists while exploring topics in biology Young children will eagerly explore the relationships between biomes and animals in this vivid and accurately illustrated lesson in scientific thinking. The book introduces the five major biomes—aquatic, desert, forest, grassland, and tundra—with examples of animals that live in each. The book then implements an inquiry-style teaching method by asking readers where they think an animal might live before providing information on the animal and its biome. Once the reader learns about the characteristics of the biome and an animal’s adaptation to its biome, the book follows up with a question to encourage the reader to think further about the relationship between a biome and such animal adaptations, all the while demonstrating the effectiveness of inquiry-based education. $30,000 marketing budget Kristine Duehl has a PhD in biology with a specialty in plant-insect interactions. Through their own voices and spirited calls to action, 75 of the world’s most dynamic young activists share their extraordinary stories in this generation-defining collection for students, parents, teachers, volunteers, and community service leaders. Tapping into today’s global youth movement where social entrepreneurship and activism merge at the intersection of business, pop culture, and nonprofit work, these stories showcase young men and women—some of whom started their efforts as early as three years of age—bringing savvy compassion and unstoppable courage to and from locations all over the world, including Africa, Pakistan, India, Peru, Colombia, Afghanistan, and the United States. Whether building freshwater wells in developing nations, fighting discrimination, saving animals, or honoring heroic soldiers, these are the young people on the frontlines, from mountain peaks to rainforests to school gardens and classrooms, changing the world for the better. “Young activists today are not only lighting up the four corners of the globe with their humanitarian work and public service, now in Stand Up! they inspire, challenge, and show other young people that changing the world begins with each one of us taking a step forward!” —Tavis Smiley, author, The Rich and the Rest of Us John Schlimm has been an activist and advocate for healthy living, education, and the arts for more than two decades through his work with organizations such as the American Cancer Society; the American Red Cross; Citizens Against Physical, Sexual & Emotional Abuse; and the Humane Society. He has appeared on national media outlets including The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the New York Times, Martha Stewart Living’s Everyday Food, NPR’s The Splendid Table, QVC, and Fox & Friends. He lives in St. Marys, Pennsylvania.

Exploring the personal histories of the Quechua people who sustain this tradition, it examines how they weave extraordinary amounts of cloth on simple backstrap looms—just as their forebears have done for thousands of years—to make clothing, rugs, bedcovers, hunting slings, and sacrificial fabrics. Nilda Callanaupa Alvarez is an expert in historic Peruvian weaving techniques. She founded the Center for Traditional Textiles of Cusco and established weaving co-ops that perpetuate traditional techniques and foster economic development in the region.

SPU shares IPG’s sales force throughout the U.S. and Canada to reach thousands of accounts, including chain and independent bookstores, online retailers, national wholesalers, library and specialty wholesalers, gift and specialty retail, museums, and more. SPU does this quicker than other distributors by bypassing the traditional long lead times needed to get books into the market.

How much does it cost?
SPU was created specifically to accommodate the needs of small publishers who want to invest in the creation and promotion of their titles rather than struggle with the considerable challenges of selling and distributing themselves. Publishers pay a one-time $200 set-up fee upon signing the distribution agreement and 30% of the net sales thereafter. There are no hidden storage costs or extraneous monthly charges.

How do I get started?
from
Applying to SPU is easy. The online application can be completed in a matter of minutes, and you can expect to hear back regarding your submission within 5–7 business days.
