The topic for my lesson plan is Technology as a Tool in Enders Game.

This is by far my most favorite novel and it is perfect for high school students 9th to 10th grade. The standards I chose to incorporate in my unit plan are listed below. Speaking and listening standards 2. Integrate multiple sources of information presented in diverse media or formats (e.g., visually, quantitatively, orally) evaluating the credibility and accuracy of each source. 5. Make strategic use of digital media (e.g., textual, graphical, audio, visual, and interactive elements) in presentations to enhance understanding of findings, reasoning, and evidence and to add interest. Reading standards for literature

1. Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as 2.
well as inferences drawn from the text. Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze in detail its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text.

Writing standards 1. Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence. d. Establish and maintain a formal style and objective tone while attending to the norms and conventions of the discipline in which they are writing. e. Provide a concluding statement or section that follows from and supports the argument presented. 10. Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of tasks, purposes, and audiences. In Enders Game, technology is used as a tool for the characters in the story to achieve their goals. In f act, the technology of what was merely science fiction when the book was written in 1985 goes hand in hand with technological advancements here now, in the 21st century. By drawing parallels to the story and todays technology my goal would be to get students amped up about wanting to learn different types of modern day technology. One way students can use this concept is by creating an online journal/blog through the eyes of one of the main characters of the story. After every chapter the student will give a brief summary of the chapter through the eyes of their character. The student will build on summarizing and analyzing skills through this activity. Another activity I plan on incorporating is having the students draw parallels with the made up technology of Enders Game to todays real life technology. Students will create a presentation in small groups discussing what they have found in todays world similar to the technology made up in the novel With made up technology come made up words or different use for words and definitions for them. By using such a tool as quizzlet, students will be able to learn these vocabulary words before they read the novel so they will be experts on the words and have better story flow. Enders Game I feel was written far before its time but this will prove beneficiary as students will be able to see how technology was used as a tool in the novel and how they can use technology as a tool in their daily lives as well, even when it comes to learning.
