Indie and Alex have argued which is better; boys or girls, since forever. Neither will give in. The only way to settle it? Get a few friends, wait until night, and have a game of capture the other team in the park. ONESHOT.
'So give me one reason boys are better than girls, Alex.' I rolled my eyes; this was the fifth time we'd had the argument in one evening alone, and probably the millionth since the day we'd met, aged five.
'Because...um, well... girls have cooties!' He was only joking, but damn, the boy couldn't act his seventeen years if he tried.
'No, really?,' I had my eyebrow raised. 'I'll be needing a better reason than that.'
His grin turned evil. 'Boys are stronger,' he said, grabbing my feet, which were sticking out on the floor, and lifted me up off the ground, upside down.
'Hey!' I said, observing the floor. 'Put me down. Besides, strength isn't everything, idiot. Girls are sneakier.' I hit the back of his leg, and he almost fell over, his hands freeing me.
'Indie, Alex, give it a rest. We all know you just want to shag, but next time don't invite your friends over, yeah?' Kait, my friend said, in a bored voice, from the sofa, where she and Zach, another friend, were curled up on the sofa.
'We do not!' Alex and I protested at the same time.
Kait and Zach rolled their eyes. In unison.
Slightly annoyed by this, I swivelled round. 'Which is better? Stealth or strength?'
'How?' All three of us asked. giving the boy's group an I-Owe-You could be problematic. 'We'll prove it to you. 'Well. and the losing team has one I-Owe-You for each of the winners. The game starts at nine thirty. I always thought you and Alex should do something like this. The game ends when one team has captured all of the other. 'Um. to stop your arguments. Oh. yeah!' And scrambled out the door. So did Zach and Alex.' She was spitting out words so fast. 'Tonight. Zach said fast. Then we can test whether strength or stealth is better. before the boys erupted into cheers of 'Hell.' 'We are so better!' Came my witty response. Kait added. 'Lies! Indie. a nanosecond before Kait gabbled.' I looked at Kait. you need to realise boys will always be better than girls. we need four people on each team. I wasn't even sure she knew what she was saying. we're not going to let the boys win. Kait. on one hand. On the other hand. sister!' . There was a stunned silence. so you have two hours to the the rest of your team. what did you just do?' Kait looked vindicated. 'Stealth'. 'Well. So let's totally do this. In the park.' I pondered this. Boys versus girls.'Strength'.
They would probably bring along the third boy. Madi was right. . She was a transfer student and had joined our school a couple of years ago.' Madi said thoughtfully. 'Tactics. Madi gave me her trademark grin. then?' Lucy asked.' Damn. Alex and Zach. obviously. 'It wasn't fair to leave him out.' Luke. 'I'm so glad you and Alex are finally going to come to a decision about which is better..' 'I'm betting they won't pick out of the three of them.We were laughing so madly when we got to the phone. after eleven years of arguing.. Kelen and Harry made up the rest of the boys in our group. the two were at my house. and instantly clicked with the rest of the group. who's going to be our lucky team?' The look Kait gave me confirmed my decision. you know. 'Well.' Lucy said. so. jokingly. and claim. pulling her unruly red hair out of the way. 'So. not that there was really a choice.' I let a grin spread over my freckles. Lucy and Madi. were the obvious two.' 'Thank God I only have had to witness two years of it. And the other three in our group. if the boys can play dirty. the other two girls in our group at school. An hour later. and giggling as crazily as Kait and I had been.. 'Well.. 'I bet they'll bring all of them. so can we. who had known each other since pre-k. 'Who do you think the boys team will be?' Kait asked.
. We're going to set some traps. _ 'So.' Lucy's voice turned sheepish at the end. They'd bought along a fifth member of their group. but what I mean is don't let them get hold of you. And easier to sling round.' My voice was smiling as I grabbed the rope I had in the bottom of my wardrobe.' Kait and Madi exchanged high fives. behind the bike sheds – Oh. The excitement was mounting. It's just that.' I kind of saw Kait's point. trees in the left of the ice cream van. well. We're going to the park now. 'Anything else?' 'Yeah. Alex frowned. I mean. your smaller than anyone else.' 'Now?' Madi's voice was confused. and I grinned. looking at Madi.'Indie. Four to each team?' Madi had been right. 'Uh. She had at least five inches on me. Alex. businesslike. stay out the way. 'Yeah. 'Yeah. then gestured to his group. run-down of traps set?' I asked. the second shortest in our group. be sly and underhand if you can. hi. I see one more person there. now.
across the trees. surprisingly quiet. you'll still beat us hands down.'Yeah. Boy's base is at the park bench. And then there was crackling. but as I had been expecting it. 'Okay. But it caused Luke's eyes to snap up into the tree.. This could be harder than I thought. of nine people scattering could be heard. I had been wicked jealous of them when he'd been given them at the age of five. It was only a tiny giggle. but if girls are so much better than us.' I frowned. Glancing down. . as whoever waked straight into our trip wire and went sprawling. And connect with mine. and picked a likely looking one. Oops. let it slide. I realised there was one of our trip wires right underneath it. 'Alex. it was inevitable. Perfect. I sprinted into an area of trees.' I looked across the dark park doubtfully. If possible. I hadn't been waiting long before I heard someone come crashing through the leaves. It might have been okay. girls is at the bike shed. And then a louder smack.. if I hadn't laughed. 'Everyone. before grabbing the first branches and shinning up it.' I realised the cracking was from Alex's action man walkie talkies. I've found Indie. GO!' The sound. and after seeing the person I had now identified as Luke walk straight into our trap. I was even more jealous now.
' His lips were close to my ear.' Was about three seconds too late. slight problem.'Well.. 'Ouch!' His voice was shocked.' You'll be sorry. Alex became the second person to fall victim to our trip wire. 'I could feel his head moving over the top of mine. I jumped.' He said this because he knew it annoyed me. Alex was my friend. 'What am I going to do with you?' . 'Well. I hate being patronised. Alex came crashing though the trees. Or. Luke climbed the tree.' All of twenty seconds later. Until Alex looked up and said. 'Did you seriously just bite me?' I refused to say anything. I would have. Definitely not fanciable. I cursed my tree – picking skills. then did the only thing I could.. I admired the way his muscles bunched up then shuddered.. and started kicking and struggling like a wild thing. I managed to ignore this. if the tree hadn't been so short. furious. 'Feisty. 'Why would you jump. Heroically. Luke's alarmed cry of 'Alex! Mind out for the.. I climbed higher. She's up a tree. you idiot?! You could have broken every bone in your body!' Alex stood over me. I had barely stood up when Alex grabbed my forearm. if that's the way you want to play it. I decided to take advantage of this and run. I bit his arm. I laughed proudly. and slammed me against his chest.' I had know Alex long enough to know he was serious.
'Well. Indie. and.I realised what he was going to do a moment before he did. once handed the rope. and grabbed Luke. 'Luke..' I grumped. I'm presuming your group has actually done rather well. not me. 'Well.. I'm going to go now. I'm going to have to go save my team. 'Leave me! Save yourself!' Okay. 'I hate you forever. 'It's all your fault. I was being a little melodramatic. but what the heck. since I haven't seen any boys.. could you unwind that rope for me?' Alex ignored my protests. and Alex and I reached the park bench.' He said. That was when Lucy and Madi crashed out of nowhere. I closed my eyes and. Then tied my rope to the park bench. Lucy and Madi managed to pull Luke away. 'No-!' I shrieked.. quickly tied my hands behind my back. I watched him disappear into the darkness and bit my lip. 'Indie!' Madi's outraged cry was directed at Alex.' His lips were dangerously close to my mouth. Why had I been expecting a kiss? . you should never have made that trip wire.' I shut my mouth and resolved not to talk again. they were overpowering him. Somehow.
'Kait! I never even noticed!' My smile was as wide as possible. and with even more difficulty. Madi was sitting on top of Luke. And burnt through the rope. I am owed an I-Owe-You. With difficulty. And Kait was passionately kissing Zach. He made more noise than a herd of really wild wildebeest. I squealed. I had a Zippo lighter in my pocket. looking very pleased with herself. 'Actually. I slid up behind him. Not because I smoke or anything. Lucy was leaning against the bike shed door. I managed to manoeuvre my hand to my pocket. quickly fashioning my left over rope into a loose slip knot.' . Alex. So I think I'll-' I broke off to press my mouth to his. but that really wasn't an issue at that point.I was then struck by the best idea I had had all day. The smell was disgusting. Sneaking up on Alex was ridiculously easy. and was greeted with the weirdest sight ever. which clearly contained Harry and Kelen. Alex murmured in my ear – 'That was my I-Owe-You for when we won. but because I just like fire. 'But you didn't win. managed to ignite the flame. When we came up for air. I was free. I led him back to our lamppost.' I smirked against his lips. And had over his wrists and pulled tight before he realised what was going on.
It was his turn to smirk.' . 'Until our rematch...
