JULY 2013 VOL. 25 STUDYBREAKS.COM

Why do we love the outdoors? For some of us, it’s where most of the big events in our childhood took place. Others just don’t like the feeling of constriction that the indoors provides and want to be outside chillin’ and exploring things. Whatever the reason may be, we can all agree that the best time to truly appreciate the outdoors is summertime. You got to keep things interesting outdoors though; there’s more to it than just breathing the air. Try something new—for example, learning parkour. Parkour is something we kind of used to do when we were younger, but we didn’t really know there was a name for it or an art to it. YouTube would probably be able to explain it better than me. Or you can try ultimate frisbee at MacKenzie Park or just go to a park period; it feels like nobody does that anymore. e outdoors is a place to bring out your inhibitions and test your limitations. Instead of just existing, get out there and live a little.

I showed sheep from the time I was five until I graduated high school and won many awards. I probably have about a hundred belt buckles that I have won through the years.

I recently got engaged to my fiancé, Billy Bob! My new last name will be Moczygemba.

4 5
I never leave my house without my hair being big! I have taught cheer camps for the past six summers through the greatest cheer company in the world!

9

6

I only eat steak “blue,” which means that it is less than rare.

7

My birthday is New Year’s Eve— yes, I celebrate double every year.

My favorite television shows are True Blood and Duck Dynasty. I secretly wish that I could be in an episode of both shows; I’d make an awesome vampire!

I have a Corgi named Kicer. (The “c” makes an “s” sound.)

I am a senior and still undecided on a career. I just know that I want to work with people and NOT always be behind a desk—I like being on the go!

COLLEGE GUIDE TO THE GREAT OUTDOORS
Though we’re typically more accustomed to giving you ways to drink for free or, you know, find a bang buddy online, sometimes we like to get a little more wholesome with it and tell you how to make the most of Mother Nature. Because, let’s be real, that babe is the BOMB.
WORDS: SAM SUMPTER

DOMINATE MOTHER NATURE STUDY BREAKS PRESENTS THE OFFICIAL

10 FLOATING ESSENTIALS
THE STUFF YOU NEED TO ROCK THE RIVER THIS SUMMER
1. SWEET SHADES
Protect your pupils (and get your gawkin’ on carefree) in some sick sunglasses.

6 CAMPING DO’S & DON’TS
THE RULES FOR YOUR NEXT MUST-ESCAPE-CAMPUS EXCURSION
DO:
Trade your dorm-room drinking for an ice-cold beer (or 12) by the fire

DON’T:
When you light up a cig, you might as well be slappin’ Smokey Bear in the face. Only you can prevent forest fires, so chill out with the Camels while you’re campin’, kids.

2. CROAKIES
So you don’t lose said sweet shades when rockin’ the rapids.

3. SUNSCREEN
SPF is essential and, let’s be real, there’s no better pick-up line than “Hey Babe, can you get my back?”

DO: 7. A COOLER
Keep that Natty Light cold, kids. Put your food in the car at night to avoid a raccoon raid. Trust us: When it comes to snacks, those scavengers are even worse than stoners.

4. A SICK SOUNDTRACK
We recommend totally uncliché classics…like “Just Around the Riverbend.” (POCAHANTAS IS PERFECT FOR PARTYING, OK?!)

8. A WATERPROOF CAMERA
You don’t wanna lose those nip slip shots because your Nikon got wet.

DON’T:
Thou shalt not litter is camping commandment number one, and you’re gonna feel like a real asshole when a bunny chokes on your chip wrappers.

9. SOMETHING SHARP 5. BEER
We’re not claiming to be original here, but ya gotta bring beer, bros. We’re not talkin’ a shank, here, but you need something sharp to shotgun, ya dig?

DO:
Scare yourselves 90s-style and get your Are You Afraid of the Dark? on with gruesome ghost stories.

6. BOTTLED WATER
Because drinking from the river? That’s Hepatitis waiting to happen.

10. A DESIGNATED DRIVER
When you’re floatin’ with Franzia for five hours, make sure you’ve got someone to get you back alive, aight?

DON’T:
You didn’t go camping so you can Facebook-stalk your ex, play Candy Crush and Instagram photos of your outdoors expertise (#camping #fire #tent--#YOU’REANNOYING). Ignore the iPhone for 5 seconds and look at the stars or some shit, mmmkay?

5 OUTDOOR ACTIVIT IES YOU NEED TO TRY
…BECAUSE GETTING DRUNK BY THE POOL DOESN’T COUNT

SICK SUPPLIES FOR SURVIVAL…AND STUFF
GEAR YOU JUST GOTTA GET
New Balance Sport Arm Wallet, $13, amazon.com
Because when you trade walking to class for running from bears, you’re gonna need a wallet that straps to your arm, obviously.

1. SPELUNKING
Get out of your dorm room cave and…uhh… explore a cave!

Nike Fuel Band, $150 nike.com
So you can count how many calories you burn while you’re working out at the rec… or, ya know, RUNNING FROM BEARS

Tecnu Extreme Poison Ivy Scrub, $13, drugstore.com

2. WHITEWATER RAFTING
Because blue water? Soooo passé .

Because you know what DOESN’T bring all the boys to the yard? Rashes. Itchy, contagious rashes. (Uhh…so we hear.)

Treavelon Unisex Poncho, $25, walmart.com

3. BIRDWATCHING
Turn your binoculars away from that sorority house window though, bros—if it’s not a heron, you shouldn’t be starin’.

Perfect attire for a rainy day in the woods— and finally something to wear to all those… uhh…poncho-themed frat parties!

Clif Shot Energy Gel, $1, rei.com
An energy gel isn’t just awesome fuel for marathons, but for marathon study sessions too…Oh, and astronaut-ing. Definitely astronaut-ing.

Motorola 10-mile Talkabout Rechargeable Two-Way Radio, $30, target.com
Because red cups are for beer pong, not for linking with string to make walkie talkies— go a little more pro, yo’.

4. MOUNTAIN CLIMBING
Hell, you’ve been climbing over those piles of dirty clothes for months—you could climb Kilimanjaro tomorrow.

Victorinox SwissChamp Swiss Army Knife, $75, walmart.com

5. FLY FISHING
This IS just fishing when you look really fly, right? Shitttt—we know you’re good at that.

Because you’re obv gonna need a fish scaler, wood chisel and bottle opener…but yeah, mostly a bottle opener.

7/4
4TH ON BROADWAY FESTIVAL AT MACKENZIE PARK The 4th on Broadway Festival on Independence Day is a classic Lubbock event, going on essentially all day (8 a.m.-4 p.m.) down Broadway with live music. The parade (and party) then moves to Mackenzie Park at 4:30 and goes on until, well…whenever you’re too tired to hang. This year’s festival headliner is Josh Abbott Band, which is perfect because—let’s be honest—even though we’re celebrating America this 4th of July, all we really want is some Texas Country.

About Me! 18 Things You Don’t Know
1. Will Smith is one of my favorite rappers. 2. Tracee Ellis Ross can get it any day of the week. (Gotta happen before she turns 60, though.) 6. If your mother is attractive, it might not be a good idea for us to be friends. 7. Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time. 8. I’ve always been involved/ around music, whether it was in church on Sunday morning, something for school, rapping with friends/family, or just grooving with my grandpops spinning his James Brown vinyls. 9. Only been rapping seriously for like 3 years, though. 10. I hate negativity.

SWEETHEART OF THE MONTH
PROVIDED BY: TOTALFRATMOVE.COM

Shayna Ruth
Age: 19 • Height: 5’8” School: Ole Miss Major: Chemical Engineering Relationship Status: Single One thing that impresses you when you’re out on a date? When the guy talks about how much he loves his family and knows exactly what he wants in life. What’s the creepiest move a guy has ever tried to pull on you? I was at a concert and a guy came up to me and said, “Wanna meet an anaconda tonight?” What are your plans after Graduation? I am going to live in the South on the biggest plantation ever, no matter if a Southern Gentlemen gets me there or I do it independently. All-time favorite TFM or TSM? “Wait, he’s social chair? Maybe I should text him back.” TSM.

10 THINGS TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IN THE SUMMER
PROVIDED BY: TOTALFRATMOVE.COM

10

The fact that your classes are a fucking joke Everyone knows summer school is supposed to be easy, including your professors. Morally sound girls in bikinis Unless they’re stripping to get through school, those girls are never going to be less dressed in public than they are right now. The ability to get some color Your pale ass is going to wish you had once December rolls around. Freezing cold, American beer It’s never going to taste as good as it does when it’s over 100 degrees outside. Golfing weather If one of your hands isn’t significantly whiter than the other by September, you did it wrong. The ability to fill water guns with liquid other than water You know what I’m saying, hombre? Yeah, you know what I’m saying. Empty bars Underclassmen that went home to mommy and daddy aren’t around to clutter your favorite drinking spots. The ability to pull Top Gun moves in beach volleyball If you’re not playing beach volleyball and slapping hands like Maverick and Goose after a mean spike, you’re doing it wrong. Nature’s sexual heat lamp The sun is up there keeping them all toasty and warm. That’s half the battle. It’s mating season. Total lack of responsibility It’s like free time at summer camp for you right now. Get out there and freak someone out.

TFMs of the Month
Waking up in a kilt that looks remarkably similar to the flannel shirt you were wearing last night. TFM. Making the bride’s family immediately regret having an open bar. TFM. “This calls for a drink,” after completing the simplest of tasks. TFM.

TSMs of the Month
The bouncer complimenting you on your monogrammed necklace, but never questioning why it doesn’t match your ID. TSM. It’s only a walk of shame if you’re ashamed of what you did. TSM. Going to a wedding with the other bridesmaids, but leaving with the best man. TSM.
