PETER DENIES CHRIST
Explanation of methods
While there have been several other attempts at creating a harmony of the four Gospel accounts into a single
narrative (Beginning with the Diatesseron of Tatian from the second or third century), this one adds some novel
ideas to try to create a more free flowing text— like any of the single Gospel accounts. Adding all the details
together, some points covered by one account or the other, can often make for some clunky reading. Some have
gone as far as including every single word not duplicated in the different accounts, to avoid a charge of "taking
away from God's word" (Deut.4:2, Rev.22:19) To do this, various words and actions are pasted together and
forced into the verses with conjunctions such as "and". But in everyday writing, when we have parallel words
that we want to convey, parentheses and brackets are often used. So that would be a good vehicle to include all
of these parallel words, and it actually makes for less clunky reading, since a bracket or parenthesis sort of
pauses the flow to add the point, rather than stuffing more into the flow, as using conjuctions does.
Also, the placements of certain passages disrupts the flow. The harmonies generally start either with Luke 1:1 or
John 1:1, and then read through the whole passage. But the first four verses of Luke are not apart of the Gospel
account, but rather a dedication of the work to a certain reader. John starts out with a throwback to Genesis: "In
the beginning". The verse has actually been called the first verse of the Bible, since God's eternal existence goes
even before His initial act of creating. But then, the chapter jumps ahead with the Incarnation and a brief
summary of the Gospel, which kind of interrupt the flow, before picking up with John the Baptist's ministry. That
may actually be in order, but the harmonies usually include the whole text together, and then later go back to
other Gospels' accounts of both John and Christ's birth. Also, the placement of Luke and Matthew's geneologies.
Matthew begins with it, and Luke recounts the other side of it when Christ becomes 30. These usually end up in
two different places in the harmonies. This harmony places John 1:14, followed by the two geneologies around
Christ's birth, and follows John 1 up to the mention of John, and then picks up with Luke's account of the birth
of John. John 1:16-18 become the final summary of the Gospel at the very end (I considered putting v.10-13
there too, but that would be too abrupt a cutoff). Mark 1:1 made a perfect heading!
Also addressed is the issue of sayings Jesus made more than once, which are covered in one time in one Gospel,
and another time in another Gospel. These include the Lord's Prayer, which was first given in the Sermon on the
Mount, but was apparently repeated privately to the disciples later on (Luke 11), and the woes to the Pharisees.
(Which took place in two different places). Luke often will appear to throw a single little clip of sayings from
various sermons into other sayings. (16:18 is a great example). Many people did not realize that these were
different occasions. Many of these, since they may have slight difference, are taken by critics of the Bible as
"contradictions". And a few harmonizers have tried to blend them as well. Others however realized that these
were separate accounts, but then print both in their respective passages in their respective times. This still does
seem redundant and clunky. So I have printed one whole instance of such sayings (Usually Matthew's, which is
done in a nicely flowing style), and either omitted, or deprecated the others (i.e. leave the repeated verses out,
but include the other points). This is particularly evident in chapter 38 of this harmony, which comprises Luke
12, which consists mostly of sayings that can be found in both the ealier Sermon on the Mount and the later
Olivet discourse. Luke gives Christ's parable of the rich man whose life was required of him, which then leads
into "Take no thought for your life, what you shall eat...", and eventually, the servants not knowing when their
master will come home; all connected by "And he said unto his disciples..." in verse 22. Luke does not seem to
be following a particular timeline here, as much as Matthew does. He may have simply attached Jesus sayings
from the Sermon on the Mount and the Olivet discourse onto this parable to further illustrate the point. It is being
acknowledged now that in some of the Gospels, a strict timeline may not always be followed. This greatly helps
in understanding apparent contradictions. Luke often is the one thought to be closest to the actual sequence,
because of his pledge to Theophilus to "write unto you in order", but in the Greek, the word translated "order"
means, basically, "thereafter", and is describing Luke's presentation of the Gospel to Theophilus, not the synoptic
sequence contained in it. (Others now say that Mark is the most sequential of the synoptic Gospels).
Obviously, this is not meant as a replacement of the four canonical Gospel accounts. So inclusion of every word
or passage is not necessary, any more than it is anytime a passage, chapter or verse is quoted, with the rest of the
Bible omitted. I envisioned this as a nice study tool, to really get the "flow" of Christ's life. I was eager when I
first began seeing harmonies of the Gospels, but found they did not really give this flow, since there were still
many redundancies. Also, all were in paragraph form (with only numbered/headed "sections"), and I was used to
old fashioned Bibles in chapter and verse form. For a studier like me, it makes it harder to find things. Most did
not even have verses. The one that did, used the verse number from the text it was taken from. I thought it would
be nice to have a harmony with it's own verse and chapter numbering system. So I cut from the single Gospel
texts, pasted into the parallel columns that other "harmonies" often resort to, and then blended it all together with
the original verse numbers still there, but then used ordered lists to add the new numbers to the verses in front of
the old (many of the old ones were nicely superscripted from the downloaded KJC text files; but for some reason
did not come out right in the transition to HTML). In all, it ended up grouped into 66 chapters. When whole
chapters from individual Gospels were intact, it was easy, and the verses remained the same. Even when they
were blended, a sense of where chapter breaks should be remained.
Another novel feature I included is the use of different fonts to represent the different Gospels. That is so people
can get a sense of how it was blended. One harmony used little subscripted numbers (1 to 4) to represent them,
but the use of fonts tells you right away what is what.
The synopticals are done in serif fonts, and John in a sans-serif. “r-ansi” is basically a fixed width version of
Helvetica, which looked nicer than the standard Arial. “King” is a nice typewriter font, resembling Brother’s
“Esteem Pica” family, which of all the typewriter faces resembled text faces such as Times Roman the most. So
it fits in better than the standard New Courier. According to Scribd, these fonts should show up in e-readers
whether or not they are installed in the device.
