.This document is a description of the journey that C.I.R.T. Centro Indipendente Ricerca Teatrale
(Independent Centre for Theatre Research) began in December 2000 and continues today
(December 2007). As part of the decision to write an easily accessible text we have chosen to include
short descriptions, summaries, which show the public part of our work. The following pages map the
territory of experiences lived out over the past seven years.
Who we are
C.I.R.T. was founded by Mario Ruggeri in December 2000, for the purpose of studying and deepening
theatre practice through research. In the first years, the work of the group was accompanied and
supported by artists that had worked with Jerzy Grotowski and by experts in specific areas of the
performing arts.
Ang Gey Pin and her approach were fundamental for the performative sphere of our work, as Nhandan
Chirco was in the physical training. Riccardo Brunetti worked with us on polyphonic and homophonic
song of various ethnic origins.
These people, by working with us, have helped us move towards a ‘live’ way to practice the theatre art.
The development of the research is not always tied to the practice of theatre in the narrow sense, but
it is also tied to the maturation of every single individual and of the group through the experiences.
Our work not only develops through the work on our performances, but also through projects that we
create more internally in the group. At times these projects lie on the border between the art of theatre
and the art of living. This research is dedicated to those whom, with their efforts of Art, have made us,
or make us feel, even if for brief moments, that we are someone’s son.

Preparatory Years.
The first year we concentrated on work in the studio, giving rare presentations to people close to the
work of the group. In the months of July and October the performative structure “Frammenti
Alchemici - Tra Oriente e Occidente” (Alchemic Fragments – Between East and West) was presented
in Milan and Singapore.
This performative structure was the result of research into the link between the oniric dimension of
dreaming and that of representation. It was inspired by the vision of the master Akira Kurosawa in his
film “Dreams” (1990). During the second year we created a theatre piece based on the Russian story
“Vassilissa”; “Vassilissa – Un eroe al Femminile” (Vassilissa – a heroine), which was presented in Milan
and Turin.

The preparations for a studio project on the Epic of Gilgamesh begin in Milan in 2002. The studio
project is planned for an indetermined period of time, it began in Singapore, with the direction of
Ang Gey Pin and with the title “The First And The Last One” – A Theatrical Study On Gilgamesh – with
the support of TheatreWorks and subsequently with the support of PPAS (Practive Performance Art
School).
The First And The Last One

In 2005, through successive stages, the project achieved its resolution in Malta, within the context of SUPA 2005, cultural event created and realised by C.I.R.T. and Icarus Performance Project, a Maltese group directed by Frank Camilleri. SUPA was organized and carried out with the support of the University of Malta.

The study on the myth of Gilgamesh evolves into a
seven-month project. The work in the studio gives life to
“Canto Primo – The Journey”, which was presented in
Poland in July. In the first six months of work of the project
on the Epic of Gilgamesh, five fundamental themes were
recognized: Il Doppio (the other apart from me or the
other in me, my double), La Morte (death), La Lotta
(struggle), Il Viaggio (the journey), La Preghiera (prayer).
2004: (La Caduta - La Tempesta) - Il Doppio
Mario Ruggeri, Marcello Trotter, Marie Oms, Andrea Fici, Elena Marangakis, Marcello Frigerio, Eva Antas.

During this year new members join the group, coming from Spain, France, Greece and Italy. The work on “Canto Primo” that was retracing the story of Gilgamesh, by degrees becomes transformed and by going through different phases becomes a piece of work that presents only a few signs of the original myth of Gilgamesh. A description of the work in that period may help to explain these differences:

“A church; A priest interrogates his God about the ultimate reason for existence. The answer is clap of laughter from a handful of devils that come to him in a dream – nightmare. Headed by an old she-devil, the carriers of light take him on a initiation journey, to the heart of his fears. After having profaned the institutions of religion, and accompanied by his double, made visible, he undergoes various trials to finally reach the place of answers. Here, the handfuls of devils, (after having put him into a hypnotic state), confront him with his own questions. The answers, however, are inaudible. They purify him and once again launch him on a new journey, as though through a looking glass. This time the journey is different, more terrible, less grotesque and playful, but may be closer to the answers he seeks.”

During 2004 the group travels through Spain (Lleida, the Municipal theatre “L’excorcador”), France (Nice, University of Arts), Sicily (Palermo and Catania, University of Humanities and Philosophy). During this year the group shares its work through performances, demonstrations and workshops.

During that same year, 2004, a collaboration with Frank Camilleri (Icarus Performance Project –
Malta) begins, with a workshop/exchage. The collaboration develops and the following year gave life
to SUPA: Summer University of Performing Arts ( www.tarf.info ).
SUPA was created by:
- Mario Ruggeri (C.I.R.T.)
- Caroline Gatt (Department of Anthropology, University of Malta)
- Frank Camilleri (Icarus Performance Project).
2005: Feggaraki - Il Minotauro – Vassilissa
Mario Ruggeri, Andrea Fici, Elena Marangakis, Marcello Frigerio.
The research initially inspired by the Myth of Gilgamesh takes on its final form with the title
“Feggaraki” (Little Moon).
Feggaraki was presented in Malta as part of SUPA 2005 (20th July and 31st August), together with
two studies: the first was on the Greek myth of the Minotaur; and the second was about the Russian
story “Vassilissa”.

A
phase of research begins in
2006 with new studio material.
With this material the first
performative structure is created
in
May and entitled “Mexicana”,
due to the inclusion of Mexican
song in the work. The material for
the work was formalized and
presented in Malta for SUPA 2006

That same year, 2006, we showed the work to Jaroslaw Fret, director of “The Centre for Study of Jerzy Grotowski's Work and for Cultural and Theatrical Research” as well as to Grzegorz Ziolkovski, in Wroclaw, Poland. During this brief period, there was a collaboration within “Tracce Italiane” (Italian traces), which was a theatre event that was held in November 2006. Mexicana is also presented during this event, with the new title “Mexicana in Emmaus”, a title that incorporated the developments of the work.

The new phase, born in 2006, continued in the project “Progetto Radicamento” (“project taking root”). Thanks to the Polish Institute, it was made possible for us to present our first nucleus of work in Brezinka, at one of the seat of the institute in the vicinity of Wroclaw. The new material is first presented after one month of work with a number of people responsible for the Polish centre.

The current performative structure based on the Greek myth of the Labyrinth, will be presented in Zurich in December 2007.

Our work requires long and continuous practice. The practice that we carry out is not conditioned by production criteria and the people who work with us often are not actors or actresses. The group, in its various formations, has always been composed of a small number of people.
