Muse are an English alternative rock band that formed in Teignmouth, Devon, England in 1994. Where is England ?

England is a country that is part of the United Kingdom. Its inhabitants account for more than 83% of the total UK population, whilst its mainland territory occupies most of the southern two-thirds of the island of Great Britain. England shares land borders with Scotland to the north and Wales to the west and elsewhere is bordered by the North Sea, Irish Sea, Celtic Sea, Bristol Channel and English Channel. The capital is London, the largest urban area in Great Britain.

Where is Devon?

Devon is a large county in South West England. The county shares borders with Cornwall to the west and Dorset and Somerset to the east. Its coastline follows the English Channel to the south and the Bristol Channel to the north. It is the only county in England with two separate coastlines. Who are Muse?

Muse are an English alternative rock band that formed in Teignmouth, Devon, England in 1994. Since their beginning, the band has comprised vocalist, guitarist, pianist and songwriter Matthew Bellamy, bassist and backing vocalist Christopher Wolstenholme and drummer and percussionist Dominic Howard. Muse have released four studio albums. Black Holes & Revelations allowed the band a Mercury Prize nomination and a third place finish in the NME Albums of the Year list for 2006. Muse have won many other music awards in their career, including five MTV Europe Music Awards, five Q Awards, four NME Awards, two BRIT awards and four Kerrang! Awards.

History
Formation and early years (19921997)
The members of Muse played in separate bands during their stay at Teignmouth Community College and Coombeshead College in the early 1990s. The formation of Muse began when Bellamy successfully auditioned for the part of guitarist in Dominic Howard's band. They asked Chris Wolstenholme, who played drums at the time, to learn to play bass guitar for the band. Wolstenholme agreed and took up lessons. In 1994, under the name Rocket Baby Dolls and with a Goth/glam image, the group won a local battle of the bands contest, smashing their equipment in the process. "It was supposed to be a protest, a statement", Bellamy said, "so, when we actually won, it was a real shock. A massive shock. After that, we started taking ourselves seriously". Shortly after the contest, the three decided to forego university, quit their jobs, change the band name to Muse, and move away from Teignmouth.

Showbiz (1999-2000)

Showbiz is the debut album, released on 4 October 1999 in the United Kingdom. Recorded between April and May at RAK Studios, London and Sawmills Studio, Cornwall, the album was produced by John Leckie and Paul Reeve with the band. My opinion: I think the album is very dark and I feel the pain listening the songs. My favourite music is Showbiz.

Origin of Symmetry and Hullabaloo (20012002)

Origin of Symmetry is the second studio album, released on 17 June 2001 by Mushroom Records. Recording took place at Ridge Farm Studios in Surrey and Real World Studio in 3

Wiltshire, and additional recordings were made at Astoria Studios, Richmond Studios and Abbey Road Studios in London and Sawmills Studio in Fowey, Cornwall. My opinion: Its a very creative and different album. Its my second favourite album. The album is more optimistic than Showbiz. My favourite song is Plug in Baby. Muse released a live DVD, Hullabaloo, featuring live footage recorded during Muse's two gigs on consecutive nights at Le Zenith in Paris in 2001 and a documentary film of the band on tour. A double album, Hullabaloo Soundtrack was released at the same time, containing a compilation of B-sides and a disc of recordings of songs from the Le Zenith performances. A double-A side single was also released featuring new songs "In Your World" and "Dead Star". My opinion: I think it was a very energetic performance, they smashed their equipment and the crowd liked. My favourite music is Dead Star.

Absolution (20032005)

Absolution is the third studio album. It was released on September 21, 2003 in the UK and on March 23, 2004 in the U.S. by Taste Music Limited. My opinion: Its an album about the end of the world and about religion. Its my favourite album. My favourite songs are Time is Running Out, Hysteria and The Small Print. A DVD was released by the band on 12 December 2005, called Absolution Tour. The official release contained re-edited and re-mastered highlights from the Glastonbury Festival 2004 and previously unseen footage from London Earls Court, Wembley Arena, and the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles. My opinion: I think it was one of their best performances. I loved Matts coat and his dance in the solo of Time is Running Out.

Black Holes & Revelations and HAARP (20062008)

In July 2006, they released their fourth album, co-produced by Muse and by Rich Costey, titled Black Holes & Revelations. The album was released officially in Japan on 28 June 2006, in Europe on 3 July 2006 and, in North America on 11 July 2006. My opinion: Its an album that speaks about politics and personal things about Matts life, because he writes all the lyrics. My favourite songs are Knights of Cydonia and Invincible. Before to the release of the new album, the band resumed making live performances. Possibly their biggest performances to date were two gigs at Wembley Stadium on 16 June and 17 2007. Both Wembley concerts were recorded for a DVD/CD titled HAARP, which was released on the 17 March 2008 in the UK and 1 April 2008 in the USA. My opinion: I loved the concert, because it was very energetic and futuristic sound. I liked Knights of Cydonia performance.

Style
Many Muse songs are recognizable by lead vocalist Matthew Bellamy's falsetto. This has led to Bellamy being compared to Thom Yorke of Radiohead. "It depends on what level they say it," says Bellamy; "If people say it as a comparison, that's fair enough, but if they think that I try to copy him, that's the thing that is difficult to swallow . I find it a compliment as long as people know that I haven't tried to emulate what he does: it's my own thing." As a guitarist, Bellamy often utilizes arpeggio and pitch-shift effects to create a more "electric" sound, citing Jimi Hendrix and Tom Morello as influences for this method. Black Holes & Revelations was influenced by various styles of European and Asian music. "I've been listening to quite a lot of music from the south of Italy on this album", Bellamy admits. "I've been living in Italy for a while, and I discovered this music from Naples, which sounds like a mix of music from Africa, Croatia, Turkey, and Italy. It kind of gives it a mystical sound, so I think that's one thing that influenced the album. I like being influenced by things that have a mixed style" . In September 2008, the band received an Honorary Doctorate of Arts each from the University of Plymouth for being recognized as "not only one of the most exciting live bands in the world, but also a band which pushes musical boundaries".

Conclusion
Why do I like Muse? They are my favourite band, I can't explain all the things their music make me feel, I've been listening to them every single day at home and I just keep falling in love. Matt is a gifted musician and writer, and I love the way he express himself in all those beautiful lyrics, and Dom and Chris are amazing musicians. Muse have awesome riffs, groovey basslines, amazing piano pieces, cool drum beats & intense emotional vocals. They are probably the best live band around at the moment. Theyre the BEST BAND IN THE WORLD, and I know theyre the best band in the world for a lot of people too.
