The Judging in the PSM Salons

The nerve center of any successful Salon is the judging process. The Salons of the PSM too
are no exception to this. The judging in each of its Salons is an extremely scientific, transparent, unbiased and independent one. To begin with, and to lead by example, it is practice that the Salon Committee members do not take part in the Salon. Further, no member who has participated in the salon is allowed to be in the judging room, leave alone being involved in the judging process. The PSM salons have a unique distinction of using advanced software to index the photographs, catalogue them and release the results in the shortest possible time. Salon 2010 had all the ingredients of the PSM legacy. The salon received 2876 photographs in the seven categories from 286 photographers from the length and breath of India, which is a record for the organsiation. The judging was held on 24 and 25 September at the Gandhinagar Club at Adyaru. The judges were T N A Perumal, the celebrated nature photographer from Bangalore, Madhu Sarkar, the Master from Kolkata, David DSouza, the famous photographer from Mumbai and Ashok Kandimala, the software professional turned photography columnist and teacher. PSM deliberately choose these eminent and seasoned photographers from the varied and diversed fields of photography to judge to identify the photographs of the highest quality for the awards and for the exhibitions. Each photograph was physically displayed to the judges who awarded marks between 1 to 10 for the same. The judging process was indeed a treat for the members who were involved. It gave all of us an insight on how to study a photograph, dissect each of the elements in the same and above all to take better pictures. It also gave us an opportunity to see around 2900 pictures taken by our brethren from across the country. Though there was a feeling that we could not participate in the salon, the joy and learnings obtained from the judging process was so immense that the feeling of non participation evaporated just as the dew drops in the flower when exposed to the rays of the sun !

The Judging was a elaborate process. Each entry was judged by all the 4 Judges and total scores were taken into consideration for selecting winners and Honorary mentions as well as acceptances. The Judging took place from 24 to 25 Sep 2010
Our Panel of four Judges were: 1. Sri Ashok Kandimala, Hyderabad 2. Sri T.N.A.Perumal, Bangalore 3. Sri David Dsouza, Mumbai 4. Sri Madhu Sarkar, Kolkata
