that way, but is that the way people buy? As a loan consultant, I will qualify home buyers for a fixed amount, generally in $25,000 increments. Similarly, online home property searches tend to split price search options into $25,000 blocks. Pricing a home using the “99” technique may be limiting how many times your home comes up in property searches. Let’s say a buyer is prequalified for a $250,000 home loan. She jumps on the internet or tells her Real Estate agent to look for the perfect home listed between $225,000-$250,000. If you’ve priced your home at $249.999, no problem, you’ll be in the running. But if she starts looking for a home priced between $250,000 $275,000, your listing will not show up. See MARKET, pg. 13
example, most buyers would choose the “ 99” option for the perceived savings. Barbecue grills at $129.99, car e live in a leases at $399/month, even “99”sales gas prices are riddled with world. Everything people 9s - the examples are everyshop for is expressed in “99.” where. Is that the way it is in When choosing between the world of Real Estate? We $2.99 or $3 for a soda, for know that homes are listed

Special to the Trail-Gazette
n Friday July 5, the Women Artists of the West (WAOW) are riding into Estes Park, Colo., to paint the town. You’ll find them ready to answer your questions about painting and sculpting at locations all over town, including the Riverside Plaza, the Riverwalk, and the Cultural Arts Council (CAC)Fine Art Gallery. The Cultural Arts Council’s gallery, located at 423 W. Elkhorn Ave., was selected for this year’s annual exhibition, and is the only location in the United States it will be shown. The muchanticipated Women Artists of the West 43rd annual national exhibition, “WAOWing the Centennial State,” opens on Saturday, July 6, at 12:30 p.m., right after the winning paintings are selected, and the gallery will host an opening reception for the public between 5 and 9 p.m., with food generously sponsored by three favorite local restaurants, “The Other Side,” “Sweet Basilico” and “The Grubsteak.” Admission to the show is free and the Cultural Arts Council will handle sales of the artwork. Support for the Cultural Art Council’s hosting of ”WAOWing the Centennial State,” in part, is provided by local businesses and individual contributions. A list of sponsors will be available during the exhibition. See more on this story in the Friday edition of the Trail-Gazette and online at wwweptrail.com.

Everyone clapped for Honor Flight vets
Stand and clap at the Honor Flight fund-raiser July 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the Rocky Mountain Opry
By Steve Mitchell Special to the Trail-Gazette
Jack MacDade enjoys a beer on his 21st birthday at the Chez Paree nightclub in San Francisco on April 11, 1946.
uring operations off Okinawa, a Japanese dive bomber dropped an 800pound bomb on the signal bridge of the USS Yorktown CV-10. Just 40 feet away, gunner’s mate Jack MacDade remembers his twin 5-inch, 38-caliber gun turrets losing power and going dead. Still, MacDade fondly recalls the Yorktown as the “Lucky Y,” because the Japanese never knocked her out of commission during World War II. More than 60 years later, Honor Flight of Northern Colorado honored Jack MacDade and other World War II and Korean veterans by sending them to Washington, D.C., to visit the World War II Memorial, Iwo Jima Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall and the Korean War Veterans Memorial. When the veterans arrived from Denver and walked into the Baltimore airline terminal, everyone stood and clapped — the workers, people waiting for flights, even active servicemen. “It gives you goose bumps,” MacDade said. “It’s the best thing that anyone has ever done for me.” The trip doesn’t cost the veterans a cent. Honor Flight of Northern Colorado covers the estimated $1,000 it costs to send each veteran to Washington, D.C. Since the program’s inception, 46 veterans from Estes Park and the surrounding area have gone on Honor Flight. To help raise money for this fine effort, the Estes Park Honor Flight Committee has partnered with the Barleens Rocky Mountain Opry to
host a patriotic fund-raiser Saturday, July 13, at 7:30 p.m. The show will feature 1940s swing music, patriotic songs and other popular tunes from the World War II era. Tickets are $25 for adults and $18 for those 4 to 16 years of age. Proceeds go to support Honor Flight. What makes Honor Flight special is the planning and care volunteers take in making sure the veterans make the trip safely. World War II veteran Dick Marquart, who served in India with the Army Signal Corps, said it was the guardians who watched out for the veterans, many of whom were in wheelchairs and used oxygen. “We had no medical emergencies,” said Marquart, who went on Honor Flight in May. “It was the guardians who kept things safe.” Many guardians form spe-
cial bonds with the veterans they accompanied long after the event. In May, when the four buses carrying Marquart and other veterans were on their way to Denver International Airport, people waved flags from overpasses and along the roads to show their support. Former Guardian Carey Stevanus and veteran Jack MacDade were among them, standing along I-25 near Firestone with the fire trucks, to give the veterans a huge send-off. For many World War II and Korean veterans, Honor
Flight is one of the high points of their lives. MacDade is proud of the handmade quilt he received as part of Honor Flight from the Platte Valley Elementary School. The inscription read: “This Quilt of Valor is made for you with love and respect. We hope you heal quickly. Thank you for your service to our country.” The Estes Park Honor Flight Committee invites businesses, local civic groups and individuals to become sponsors of the event for $250. Each sponsor
receives two free tickets to the show. Checks should be made out to the Community Foundation/Honor Flight and mailed to Gary Brown, P.O. Box 778, Estes Park, CO 80517. Sponsorships are tax-deductible. So far, sponsors include Larry Allen, Estes Park Aviation Club, Fairbanks Excavation, Black Canyon Inn & Resort, Vern and Jeanie Mertz, Estes Park News and LTC (ret) Gary Brown, Knights of Columbus (2), Eva and Marvin Womack and Good Samaritan Village.
