Tobias Tovera is an American visual artist recognized for the sensory surrounds of his multi-media installations as well as his work in painting and performance. Using time as process and material, Tovera's methods of making serve to explore energy systems that posit new dimensions to otherwise static materials through the introduction of opposing elements. He states, ‘In my artwork I am interested in discovering transmuted spaces, places where energy shifts, changes, or renews itself. Through an exploration of the interstices between opposing elements, such as nature and artifice or chaos and order, I wish to explore entropic systems where healing may occur. I want my audience to be left with question and confronted by a raw sense of what it means to be alive.’

The Performance Art Institute (PAI) is a new and exciting multifaceted art space dedicated to performance art and issues that matter in our society and culture. At the core of our program is our artist-in-residence program, which is one of the first and only of its kind. Housing and showcasing new genre artists connected to performance, film, video, sound and avant-garde music, our artist-in-residence program focuses on the development and presentation of new work created in the freethinking and accessible atmosphere of PAI and San Francisco. Through creative alliances with local museums and nine bay area schools, artists from around the world are presented with the opportunity to meld their residency into the maximum creative environment to ideate, compose, perform and document fresh work.
