Its full form is Programmable Logic Array II. we often use a device to perform multiple applications. Such devices are known as programmable devices. Defination Programmable Logic Array is a programmable device used to implement combinational logic circuits. which can then be conditionally complemented to produce an output. This layout allows for a large number of logic functions to be synthesized in the sum of products canonical forms. The PLA has a set of programmable AND planes. which link to a set of programmable OR planes. Block Diagram of PLA 3 .I. Introduction In Digital design. III. The device configuration is changed (reconfigured) by programming it. PLA is a type of programmable device.

either to be connected or not.IV. PLA Schematic 1 The schematic shows a basic outline of PLA. In this way by connecting the circuit we can make combinational circuits using PLA Each and gate represents 6 input and gates and each or gate represents 8 input or gates 1 4 . Here each small circle is programmable.

Prepare the truth table 2.V. 3. Write the Boolean expression in Sum of product form. a don't care condition becomes an address input that will never occur. 7. Decide the input connection of the AND matrix for generating the required product term. 4. Decide the connections of invert matrix. 6. Implementation procedure 1. 5. Obtain the minimum SOP form to reduce the number of product terms to a minimum. Program the PLA. The result is that not all the bit patterns available in read-only memory are used which may be considered a waste of available component. Advantage of PLA over ROM A combinational circuit combinational logic may occasionally have don't-care conditions. Then decide the input connections of OR matrix to generate the sum terms. The words at the don't care address need not be programmed and may be left in their original state (all 0's or all 1's). VI. When implemented with a read-only memory. 5 .
