Project

You will be creating a presentation where you will be exploring the background surrounding the Pythagorean Theorem and illustrating how it is used to prove that right triangular objects in your life are actually right triangles. For this project you will need to research, Pythagoras, the man who received credit for discovering the Pythagorean Theorem. You will also need to have three pictures of objects that seem to be right triangles (These objects can be something in the community (Ex: part of a statue), the world, or a simple object at home.) At least one object must be an object that is actual and you are able to measure and it will be known as Object #1. You will be proving that the Pythagorean Theorem can be used to prove these objects to be right triangles. You will need to create a multimedia presentation for this project. You may either use PowerPoint, Photo Story, or Movie Maker. For the presentation, you must create fifteen slides. Content of each slide is described below:
o First slide: Title Page Projects Name Your Name Teachers Name Class Period o Second slide: Facts about Pythagoras Include pictures of Pythagoras. Include the following information on Pythagoras: The important dates of his life (birth, death, etc...) Where he lived. His important contributions to mathematics. This slide must have 4 or more sentences about Pythagoras. o Third slide: Pythagorean Theorem Include the Pythagorean Theorem in: Words Symbols Pictures o Fourth Slide: Proof to the Pythagorean Theorem You may use the proof that is provided in your book Pg. 416 or you can find an alternate proof to the Theorem (internet may be resourceful).

You are expected to explain the proof in your own words. Fifth Slide: Object #1 Include a picture of the right triangle object. Include a description of what the object is. Sixth Slide: Measurements of Object #1 Include the measurements of the object. Measurements should only be the legs of the triangle (not the hypotenuse- you will be finding this). Seventh Slide: Finding the Hypotenuse of Object #1 Use the Pythagorean Theorem to solve for the hypotenuse of Object #1. (Nice feature would be to include an audio voice over). Eighth Slide: Object #2 Include a picture of the right triangle object. Include a description of what the object is. Ninth Slide: Measurements of Object #2 Include the measurements of the object. Measurements should include all 3 sides of the right triangle. Tenth Slide: Proving Object #2 is a Right Triangle Use the Pythagorean Theorem to prove Object #2 is a right triangle. (Nice feature would be to include an audio voice over). Eleventh Slide: Object #3 Include a picture of the right triangle object. Include a description of what the object is. Twelfth Slide: Measurements of Object #3 Include the measurements of the object. Measurements should include all 3 sides of the right triangle. Thirteenth Slide: Proving Object #3 is a Right Triangle Use the Pythagorean Theorem to prove Object #2 is a right triangle. (Nice feature would be to include an audio voice over). Fourteenth Slide: Reflection Answer the following questions with specific details: What did you think of this project? o What did you like/dislike about this project? o What was the most difficult part of this project? o What was the easiest part of this project? What did you learn from this project? Do you anticipate this project helping you in your Geometry class? Did the project help you understand the Pythagorean Theorem any better? Fifteenth Slide: Bibliography Include a bibliography of all your sources used to complete the project. Must be in MLA format.
