Day 1 of your Personal MindMap Training

WELCOME TO DAY 1 OF YOUR PERSONAL BLACK BELT MINDMAP TRAINING

Friend, when di d you first hear about mi ndmappi ng? I vividly recall when I first heard about it. That was duri ng a speed-reading training (photo reading). The idea alone, worki ng with pencils and connecting words was not somethi ng I looked forward to. How could this be effective? Did I pay good money for that? What was the advantage of drawi ng? I was soon to find out... After a (brief) introduction to mi ndmapping it was as awkward as I thought. You had to change pencils all of the ti me, but that was just somethi ng you had to get used to. It was even fun to do! That's right, in less than a few hours I had changed from being opposed (resistance to change is no stranger to me either) to a passionate user! One of the reasons that I changed my attitude towards mi ndmappi ng is because I li ke short effective pieces of information. There is not always a need to wri te long stories. Hard things can a lways be broken i nto multiple easy parts. Mi ndMappi ng places a lot of emphasis on this, and you may draw! That `did it for me. And I can still see the i mpact of that decision today. After this introduction to mi ndmappi ng it was ti me to use it. One of the assignments we had to do was: make a mi ndmap of all your speed reading experiences. I work a lot wi th computers. When I got home, I used the Internet to find a software tool that could make a mi ndmap for me ( lazy? I ca ll i t practical). I downloaded some mi ndmap tools and evaluated them. One of the products, MindMapper, was at that ti me the ri ght tool for me. I contacted the company that produced it (Si mTech). They had no contact i n the Benelux. I applied for this and became the contact for the Benelux.

My goal

At that ti me, I had a company aimed at maki ng websites. This was changed, li terally i n one day, to a company ai med at mindmapping. You can say that I got the mi ndmap flu. The Mi ndMapper software was trans lated by me and a website was made for selli ng it. We also gaveadvice to people whowere interested. A new chapter in my life had started. Besides selli ng software, I am active in introducing and training people in mi ndmapping. This is done together with NLP trainers. You mi ght say that we are spreading the message of mi ndmappi ng to everybody who wants to here more.

4. Logical > Mathematical
They see the logic behind things. They can also develop the most beautiful theories for this. Examples are Einstein and Niels Bohr.

5. Rhythmic > Music
Using music, these people can made you emotional. Put someone like Mozart behind a piano and he knows how to play the instrument. Examples: Mozart and Paul McCartney.

6. Naturalistic
Quickly see similarities and classify things. You can think of Dr. Vogel.

7. Interpersonal
These people enjoy working with others. They feel what the other wants and adjust to this. People working in healthcare are an example (e.g. social workers).

Intrapersonal
They love peace and quietness. If they are alone they gain strength. People who have a strong intrapersonal intelligence are thinking a lot about their experiences and their own thoughts. Everybody has all the intelligences mentioned above. Everybody has a dominant intelligence. Place these eight intelligences in order for yourself. Start with the one that is most applicable to you and end with the one you can hardly find in yourself. Do that now! You will probably see a strong visual intelligence. This is not that strange. Most people have that. At the moment you are learning a very visually focused technique (mindmapping is all about pictures and connections). If you must learn new things the list you just made is very important to you. You learn easy and fast if you use the most developed intelligences on the list. Do you want to start learning a new language? Use the intelligences. Use the visual, auditory and other aspects of learning. Are you kinesthetic? Use movement in your learning process. This ensures that you learn faster than ever before.

Day 1 of your Personal MindMap Training

What are the advantages of mi ndmappi ng?

Now we reached the part that is probably easy for you. What are reasons to start mi ndmappi ng? You have your own reasons. Just write down the most i mportant one. Do that now! Keep that reason (on paper) with you. After some ti me, read it again and see if it was the real reason or not. Here are the most important reasons listed for different people to start mi ndmappi ng. This list is compiled from interviews I had wi th people on the subject of mi ndmapping

Insight and overview
This is normally the first reason why peoplestart with mindmapping. This is my number one reason as well. You gain so much more insight in your work and life when you make mindmaps! Even small schedules get better when using a mindmap. What I do is simple. Every morning I make a plan using a mindmap. On the fourth day you will see a list of applications and some mindmaps for this.

Gain time
Think about the amount of time you can save if you take notes in the form of mindmaps. Think about replacing text with a single picture. The efficiency of your notes will increase so much! The result will be: more time to really listen or work or do what you want to do.

You are a visual person and like to use pictures instead of words.
Pictures are more fun to look at than words. Would you go through a holiday brochure is there were only words and no pictures in it? Wouldn't you rather look at a nice white sandy beach, a blue ocean, palm trees, drinks with sun umbrellas, etc? Can you almost see the picture that I described? Most people get a picture in their head (or at least a feeling)

Study
You always wanted to learn a new language? Your work requires you to study a lot? You are a student? Please tell me if I am wrong, but you would like to study as much as you can in as little time as possible. MindMapping can assist you in this. Learning will become fun again! You are focused more on what you are studying. You get the essential information from text or presentations. This ensures a better understanding of the material.

Day 1 of your Personal MindMap Training

Review material faster
You remember a picture much better than words. The result: Spend less time in countless rehearsal.

MindMapping is the natural way of learning
Your brain works with a left and a right side. Left is Logical. This means lists, analyzing, no color. Right is color, rhythmand images. Combine these two and you will enter a world of possibilities. Let me illustrate this. You hopefully possess a fully functional body. This means that you walk using both you legs. Why should you walk using only one leg? You have two! It is (of course) possible to use only one leg. But youwill go faster and reach your goals if you use both. Why don't you do this when studying? Why take notes in a dull, linear way on paper? A mindmap brings you into a whole new world. You will combine the power of both sides of the brain (left + right) to make sure you remember better and easier! Why? Because it is a natural way of learning. You use both sides for one goal!

You have to think about what you're learning
You only write down the information that is needed. This starts the process of remembering the moment you are taking notes.

Learning becomes fun again
If you are reading the previous reasons for mindmapping, this one should be true. When I tell you to remember a few pages of boring text you can perhaps do this. You will probably love it when the information is in color. The same applies for people who are reading information out to you. It is even better to listen than to read (if your dominant intelligence is not the visual one). Even better is it when people make a show of bringing the material to you. Boring entertainers = bad. Good entertainers = good. One reason why mindmapping works is because of the way it fits to the natural way of learning of the brain. People normally do not think in words. They think in pictures. Tomorrow you will learn more about this. Think about it: 'Your brainthinks in pictures'. For a lot of people it is very important to quickly absorb information and remember it. MindMapping offers a very powerful method for this. It is also a very good tool in brainstorming sessions. More and more (large and small) companies start using MindMapping. What is your reason not to mindmap?

You parents told you to do this! Have you ever tried to takes notes from the bottom of the page upwards. This is only so in the beginning. Now I want to te ll you more on a number of reasons why not to use the techni que.com Page 16 .Day 1 of your Personal MindMap Training What are the disadvantages of mi ndmappi ng? No one will deny that mi ndmappi ng has disadvantages. you have less to write and more time to listen. These were collected during traini ng sessions. but also in their own manner. How would you feel if you are in the middle of an important conversation and your partner is drawing on his sheet? You will probably think the same: 'who is this person?'. 'is he or she listening?'. is also acquired by learning. By doing this. This soon disappears. Someone can think this. That's an efficient way of using space! So. Do you know who do this? Chinese people! When you read a Chinese news paper. Not everybody can fi nd i n Mi ndMappi ng the ulti mate learni ng techni que. It must have them. You did not start writing from left to right. Ph: +31 (0)6 2888 6623 http:// www. This Training Material Prepared by Arjen ter Hoeve(WuzoO) BV. structure is only an acquired way of working. But again. some of the listening attention is gone. articles can be read in the Western style. you write down the key information.m indmap-training. writing letters etc. As you can remember. and how about from right to left? There are a lot of people who write from right to left (the whole Arabian world!). This leaves you more time to listen carefully. It is childish. This does not mean that youcan only to one thing at a time. People are all different. Using mindmapping in important conversations is good. I cannot determine which setup to use In the beginning you can be a little uncomfortable with determining which branches to make. you write down only key information. The only thing you need to change this is simple: an open attitude! Later on you will get more information on how to setup a mindmap.) You can not write and listen at the same time Why not? It is proven that men can not do the same number of things at the same time as women. Some people find within minutes that this is a very natural way of working. it looks like a drawing match You are absolutely right. You might want to tell your partner this . Your current way of taking notes. I have taken the li berty to gi ve a reason for every disadvantage why you should use MindMapping. When you are writing. There are even people who write top to bottom right and than right to left.

My own way of taking notes works fine Do you knowthat this could be true? Still. Unfortunately we live in an age where time is one of the most valuable things we have. In about one week you know that you can do it yourself! Well. An important lesson from this is: give it a chance and try it. This Training Material Prepared by Arjen ter Hoeve(WuzoO) BV. You will never learn anything else or reach something if you hold on to your current way of working.com Page 17 . It would gomuch slower with 10 than with 2 fingers. This decrease in speed will not last long. This means that it could be at least 6 times thinner. That is true. I had no time to write it shorter. If a technique is more effective(and mindmapping is) you will gaina lot in the future. Fortunately they are also reasons for starting to mindmap! There is one more reason not to keep using the mindmap technique. To give you some extra inspiration. I don't say that they are what they are because they mindmap. in the long run (maybe even in a few weeks) I think it could be wise to start mindmapping. It gives more structure if you connect information just like in your head (remember association?). he could gain much speed. An oftenheard remark is: Here is a 20 page report.Day 1 of your Personal MindMap Training I like to read my notes and have plenty of time Sure. This phenomenon is shown in many things. You started a new experience by learning how to mindmap. I want to illustrate this with an example. Now the only thing to do is persist and create a new habit. The only thing is that they changed their thinking. You need less time to view the information and have more time for other things. The manager of a company I worked for could type pretty fast using only 2 (sometimes 3) fingers. below are some famous people who use mindmap (like) techniques. if you have bookshelves full of notes and no hurry feel free to work in the way you want to. Ph: +31 (0)6 2888 6623 http:// www. If you leave out all excess information you can make a book 10 to 20 times thinner. these are the most important reasons for not using the mindmap technique. More information on this will be in tomorrow's material.m indmap-training. I type with 10 fingers. You do not need many words. (Many) words give more structure Words give structure. You can never put enough information in a mindmap A normal reading book gives you 7 to 15% new information. He was probably right! It will go slower. And you are wondering how a mindmap of 2 sheets can represent a 200 page book? Are you surprised? Just write down this thought. And at that moment you may use your time on it as well! Today you will learn about (traditional) MindMapping. this was the last time I wrote rules. If you read all that material and took time to understand it. After a while these can be used more loosely. MindMapping is. What you need to know Yesterday you read about the human mind and what the advantages and disadvantages of MindMapping are.com Page 2 . one of the best things people can learn to keep up with the ever increasing flow of information flow. Some directions work better for youthan for other people.m i ndmap-training. MindMapping is by far the best technique to gain insight. The moment you are comfortable with MindMapping. Everybody has their own way of working. This means MindMapping on paper. Like with anything you learn you need to follow the directions closely in the beginning. NEVER start with your own directions. It is important to develop your own style. To make powerful. successful and above all nice mindmaps there are some rules that you need to know of. BUT REMEMBER: these directions have been researched and have proven themselves. Well. you are ready to start with todays training. What will you learn today? Today the rules (I rather call them directions) of MindMapping are explained.

No matter how convenient this is.Day 2 of your Personal MindMap Training Continuing the Introductino Since you have to learn the mindmap directions. I think you prefer that all information is delivered on one sheet of paper or one screen. The standard way of taking notes was reviewed thoroughly. most people don't). you will not see hand-drawn mindmaps today. so you will be discouraged from using it. it is important to learn more about the theory behind them In the development of MindMapping a number of things have been investigated. Very important: use the directions and apply them a lot (and I mean a lot!) Yesterday you learned that MindMapping is a technique that resembles the natural way of thinking. Before you start learning about the directions. It was striking to see that people normally place everything below each other. Nearly all text is brought to you in long pieces (just have a look at this training ).com Page 3 . They write long sentences and sometimes they numerate. Why do people do this? You use the same information. change things. You are ready to hit yourself then for not taking the time to rewrite your notes This brings us back to the note taking task. but fewer words. If the notes were for yourself. Most people I know (including myself) would rather let someone else do this. There is probably no need to redraw/write the mindmap So you see. The highest level of creativity originates in team play between Left (logical) and Right (emotional). it takes you less time. People say that you have a learning disability. art and science After the meeting. It is a pity that our society places the highest value on the left side of the brain. There is no need to rewrite them (you can do it of course). Schools teach people lots and lots of facts and calculus.Day 2 of your Personal MindMap Training Mindmapping. That could be true. Use both sides of your brain when studying to get maximum result. And this co-operation of the left side and the right side gives the best results! Try it for yourself. Now the real thing will start! People could say that rewriting it is some sort of reviewing and you remember more. You will see results right away! This concludes this part about your brain and taking notes. If your right side of the brain is more developed. Why? Because you are not focussed on logical things but on colours and emotions. This is perfect team play of the left and right side of the brain! This brings me to a short story of Leonarda Da Vinci. Take facts and fun and the creativity will help you in all your studies. It was only natural for him to combine the two. He was a master in both areas. He said: 'Study the science of art and the art of science' This can only be done if both brain sides of the brain co-operate.

Price tags on products in a store are normally used in the same manner. If you don't get it. Below are a couple of examples of situations that show it is easier to have a horizontal view. It is important that you know (left side) and feel (right side) why you have to do this. Ph: +31 (0)6 2888 6623 http:// www. If you still have difficulties. This is done so more information fits on it. Perhaps if we were birds it would be better to have a circular paper. when we were living in trees a vertical paper This alignment is also important when you have a look at direction number 2 This Training Material Prepared by Arjen ter Hoeve(WuzoO) BV. It is very important that you understand the 'why' behind the directions.com Page 6 . Put your paper horizontal (landscape) Your eyes look into the world with a wide screen view. As you can see in these pictures. read it again. The reason for not making wide screen televisions right away is because it was not technically possible. Wouldyou rather have a look at a clock from top to bottom? Perhaps windows in a car that are installed upright? We prefer a left to right view over a top to bottom view. Why do you think widescreen televisions are so popular? It fits our natural way of way of looking at the world.

com Page 7 . Because than there is only space below the subject then. The mindmap technique shows us that it is better to use the sheet horizontal. Ph: +31 (0)6 2888 6623 http:// www. Another advantage of this setup is that you can add information easily. You can add information anywhere around the subject.Day 2 of your Personal MindMap Training 2. This Training Material Prepared by Arjen ter Hoeve(WuzoO) BV. Place the subject in the middle Normally the subject of notes. brainstorm sessions etc is placed at the beginning (top) of a sheet. stories. You already know the reason for this. The sheet is used in portrait (vertical) view. All other information can be placed around the subject! Quite simple actually. Put the subject in the middle.m i ndmap-training. This way you keep your focus (centre) on the subject. you do NOT put the subject at the top of the sheet. To make sure youhave every opportunities to add informationto the mindmap.

Day 2 of your Personal MindMap Training

3. Work radially
This next direction is very important. A lot of mindmaps (in software or on paper) have an alignment to one side. This can be good, but it is better to work from the centre outward. This means information is going from the centre to the left, right ,top, bottom, everywhere! You will put all the information around the centre subject. You brain is made up of neurons. These are helping you in your thinking. A neuron is a cell core (nucleus) surrounded by a cell body. To communicate, the neuron uses 'tentacles' which are calleddendrites. The signals flow from one cell to another cell via these dendrites. To make this a little bit clearer have a look at the picture of the neuron. The technical terms may (of course) be forgotten. Neurons want to make connections with other neurons no matter what! Why? This is because information will move faster in your brain and you get ideas like only a genius can have! By training your brain (playing chess, crossword puzzles and learning) you stimulate the dendrites, and thus increase the number of connections. All this is necessary if you want to use your brain fully. ***: By the way, did you notice that a neuron works from the inside out? It is almost a mini mindmap! To fully utilise a mindmap you need to make connections between the information. This is done by working around the subject. It is recommended to work with a fixed structure. It is advised to work clockwise. Start at the top and work your way around. An additional advantage of this is that you can make a map very fast. Try making a mindmap of your day later on. You start above the centre and put your (daily) tasks clockwise around the subject. Have a look at the mindmap below for an example: Make sure all you have to do that day is in the mindmap and your planning is done! Perhaps this gives you so `much insight in your tasks that you can reschedule.

Day 2 of your Personal MindMap Training

4. Connect the information
friend, as you saw in the daily planning mindmap with the clock lines are used to connect the 'hours' to the subject. This way you can see what information belongs together. The line from subject to 'hour' and further is called a branch. All the information on one branch is related to each other. Normally the sentence is the connecting factor, now a branch is. What more do you see in the mindmap? There are two other things that may draw your attention. The first one is that a lot of colours are used. In the summary you saw before, you could see that mindmaps have at least three colours. This is to make sure that information is 'glued' to your memory. It is easier to remember colours than black and white information. You can say that the brighter the colours are, the better you remember it. The second thing is that the branches are not straight. There are some short parts that are only slightly curved. This is intentional. Your brain has a problem with straight lines. Try to find straight lines in nature. You probably will not find them The only straight lines you find in nature are men made. My advice to you is therefore: usecurved lines. Please do not take this into the extreme and drawcurled lines that are like claws. Make the lines natural. Make the branches clear. Do not use curved lines because you have to. Besides, try drawing a straight line without any aid. This is impossible ;) Connect information using lines - branches. Make sure that you use at least three colours (preferably more). This gives your mindmap a clear and better structure Right about now you know the structure of a mindmap. What you need is the information that you put in the mindmap. That is what the next part deals with.

Day 2 of your Personal MindMap Training

5. Use pictures and symbols
When I ask you to think of a car, what do you see? Do you see the word C-A-R spelled out? Do you see a picture of your own car, a classical car? It is likely that you don't see a word. You see a picture. That is very normal. (Most) people do not think inwords. You might hear yourself talk. Youdo not see the words. Most of the traffic in your head is in pictures and feelings. Imagine the following. Think of love. What do you see? This can be quite different for people. Some think of their spouse, children, parents, perhaps you old-timer(!). The striking thing in this is that all these thoughts have one thing in common. They bring out a feeling. It is no coincidence that you get these images in your head. They express love for you! Now try something different and more difficult. What is the smell of strawberries? Difficult, nuh?! You know what it is, but you can not describe it without referring to the original strawberry. You will probably say something like: Well, it smells like... It looks like... It reminds me of...

One thing I know for sure. During this, you did not think of the word 'smell' or the word 'strawberry'. You saw pictures of strawberries, perhaps squashed ones. You made pictures and images to replace the smell. A different way of using pictures is symbols. They allow us to say a lot with a little. They are pictures but are drawn in such a way that you understand them without explanation. Have a look at the examples on the next page. Do you know what they mean? These are just some examples. When you look around you will find lots and lots of symbols. Take your remote control. There are probably dozens on it. They need no explaining. You see them and can figure out what they mean. The saying: A picture paints a thousand words is truly valid! And to bring this back to mindmaps you can see how this increases the power of your mindmap. Think more on the saying I often use 'A mindmap says more than a thousand pictures'

Now we reach the second type of information in a mindmap. You will be able to put information straight into theright side of your brain. It gives you information very fast. I am certain that you will use words very soon and skip using pictures. Often you understand a picture very fast.com Page 11 .Day 2 of your Personal MindMap Training The use of pictures and symbols is a very powerful way of putting information in a mindmap. By the way: do you know what information goes straight into the brain. This Training Material Prepared by Arjen ter Hoeve(WuzoO) BV. Write this advice down. Even the subject will become a word for them! This concludes the use of symbols and pictures in mindmaps. without translation? Smell! Advice: Use as many pictures and symbols as possible. Most people use pictures for a few mindmaps and start using word (only). without seeing the translation or hearing the spoken language. Ph: +31 (0)6 2888 6623 http:// www.m i ndmap-training.

4 A mechanic from the auto club sees a broken car on the side of the road. What is the real car? Which one did you mean? You could be a mechanic in the elevator business. Words need translation. make sure you use clear images that raise the same emotions and images in the reader's mind. They can happen. This is done on purpose. These can prevent misunderstanding. There is something extra It is unlikely that the person who is (re)viewing your mindmap has the same associations with the word car. sounds and smells and they are called associations. A lot of people make mindmaps consisting of words only. As you can see this method of information is mentioned before this one. You can think of it completely different than someone else. you have to use pictures.Day 2 of your Personal MindMap Training 6. This Training Material Prepared by Arjen ter Hoeve(WuzoO) BV. A car for you is an elevator! Who is right and who is wrong? This is the good and the bad thing about mindmaps.m indmap-training. 3 A race driver sees his racing car. 2 A bus driver might see his bus. In practice these misunderstandings will not occur all that often. This is ok. Besides. Your mind can remember this much better (MUCH BETTER!). Use keywords and abbreviations We discussed pictures. 5 A car dealer sees the latest model. Therefore. Perhaps they see this: 1 Their own car (A small car or a huge Mercedes?). What is better is using pictures. symbols and clip art. You learned that you quicker see thepicture of some car than the word itself.com Page 12 . If you want to exchange mindmaps with other people. As you know these connections can give us images. We all have a gigantic database of images that enable us to make an infinite number of connections. the mindmap will be a lot more personal that way. Everybody is correct! Mindmaps are personal creations. Ph: +31 (0)6 2888 6623 http:// www. You noticed that pictures are recorded by the brain very fast and hardly need any translation. Why? We talked about the word C-A-R before.

In your own live you probably had moments that were this powerful (or even more powerful) yourself. Use capitals. Make sure you change the size of the capitals. what did you do on September 11 You probably do not even ask me which year. pictures are association as well One last tip on keywords: when you draw your own mindmaps. The number of connections is much more important. Besides.Day 2 of your Personal MindMap Training You know that these associations are also made in your brain. Draw yourself behind a desk with the feather in your hand. Neglect it and you should not expect it to work for you. For instance. the more you can recall. Train the muscle and you can have lots of fun using it. My guess is that when you first saw this page you made the association directly with the words in orange. Where were you during these sad. You start big in the centre and outward you use a smaller capital size. happy. Many geniuses from the past had normal brain sizes. what is easier to remember during study? By the way. The best thing to do is not to connect letters. We are talking about associations. Have a look at the following example: This Training Material Prepared by Arjen ter Hoeve(WuzoO) BV. More connections mean the ability to recall more information and increase your creativity.com Page 13 . Would you like to make a mindmap of a book? Do not draw a simple book. And do you know what the best thing is? You can train your brain and increase the number of connections! Your can see your brain as a powerful muscle. You mind automatically associates this date with New York and Washington and the attacks that took place then. That's much too general! Think of bigger pictures: parchment scrolls with a huge goose feather for writing. Do you know why? The emotional impact. please make sure that you use STRONG words that describe you feelings/thoughts on that subject. Make associations! Make strong connections! This will give you powerful mindmaps that guarantee success.m i ndmap-training. Many people will be happy to hear that the size of your brain does NOT matter. The better the association. I would recommend that in a mindmap the use of words is restricted. What would happen if you had to summarise the information to the bare minimum (and telephone text message for instance)? In Europe. The information would be limited to the utmost core! Most of the time it should not have to result in information loss. how would you make your mindmap? Have a look at the example below: This Training Material Prepared by Arjen ter Hoeve(WuzoO) BV. Many people put way too much information in an assignment.
