16 Projects Receive Support
From CBT’s Social Grants Program
Sixteen projects that support social well-being and address
social issues in Basin communities have been approved to
receive $500,000 from Columbia Basin Trust (CBT).
“Tese projects tackle diverse social issues and will afect
people of many ages across the region,” said Neil Muth, CBT
President and CEO. “Tey will complement and strengthen
the social supports already in place within our communities.”
One of the successful recipients is the Advocacy Centre
of the Nelson CARES Society. Its project involves deliv-
ering a legal support program aimed at assisting individ-
uals dealing with family law and child protection issues in
the West Kootenay region.
“Tis program will deliver much needed services
throughout the West Kootenay to families working
through dif cult family challenges,” said Jenny Robinson,
Executive Director, Nelson CARES Society. “We’re excit-
ed about the potential impacts of this project.”
Te Social Grants Program is a three-year pilot with an
annual granting budget of $1 million. Granting decisions
are made by the Social Grants Program Selection Com-
mittee, a volunteer group of Basin residents that includes
individuals who have experience and expertise in the so-
cial sector and individuals who have broader commun-
ity development experience. For more information, visit
www.cbt.org/sgp.
CBT supports eforts to deliver social, economic and
environmental benefts to the residents of the Columbia
Basin. To learn more about CBT programs and initiatives,
visit www.cbt.org or call 1-800-505-8998.

Bats and Mines
in the Lardeau Valley
This project explored abandoned mine shafts in the Lardeau
Valley over the course of a year to determine if any of them
were suitable winter habitat for bats.

and man made history of this
valley, please visit the museum.
We are open Saturday, Sunday and

With special thanks to Gillian
Sanders and Don Hunt for their

It is has been determined that
the Townsend Big Eared Bat,
a blue listed species, does
use mine shafts in the area to
hibernate. We are delighted
that these mines which initially
helped to open up this area,
are now being “re-purposed”

Tick Talk” Focuses On Tick Awareness
It’s “Tick Talk” time, when the BC Centre for Disease
Control ofers tips on how to stay safe from tick bites this
summer. As the weather gets warmer, the ticks that can
carry Lyme disease are active. Tese ticks like grassy areas
and short bushes and they can attach to you if brush by
them. Not all ticks carry the bacteria that causes Lyme
disease but there is no way to tell just by looking at them
so avoiding all tick bites is your best bet.
Tips - Remain safe from tick bites by:
• Walking on cleared trails,
• Wearing long sleeves and pants and light-coloured
clothing,
• Tucking pant legs into socks or boots,
• Using an insect repellent containing DEET on ex-
posed skin.
• Afer being in an area that may have ticks, inspect your
clothing and your skin as well as that of children and pets
for ticks. If you see a tick, remove it yourself by using
tweezers but remember to remove the tick whole and
avoiding squeezing its body.
• If a tick has buried itself into your skin, go to your
family doctor or a walk-in clinic and have it removed im-
mediately.
Quick Facts:
• Ticks are small, biting arachnids (related to scor-
pions, spiders, and mites) that feed on blood. Typically,
ticks hang out on the tips of grasses or shrubs and can be
transferred to people or animals as they brush past the
vegetation.
• Lyme disease most ofen starts with a skin rash that
looks like a “bull’s eye” and may be quite large. It ofen
spreads out from where the tick bite occurred.
• Other Lyme disease symptoms include fever, head-
ache, muscle and joint pains, fatigue or weakness of the
muscles of the face. If you have the symptoms within days
or weeks afer being bitten by a tick, consult your family
doctor or other healthcare professional.
More info:
Te risk of Lyme disease is low in BC but the ticks that-
can pass it on are found in most of the southern part of the
province. Tere were 18 cases of the disease reported to pub-
lic health last year and half of these were people who were
infected when they travelled to areas where Lyme is much
more common like parts of the eastern US and Europe.
Find information easily online and learn more about
ticks and Lyme disease – visit www.bccdc.ca/ticktalk

Flatwater Social
Taking Of In Robson!
Every Monday night this summer, you will fnd the
Endless Adventure crew in front of the Lion’s Head Pub
in Robson for more reasons than the BBQ. Surrounded
by their feet of recreational kayaks and stand up paddle
boards, the team ofers the opportunity to test a variety of
water crafs for FREE from 5:30 – 7 pm.
Te idea for a Flatwater Social night stemmed from the
desire to get more people out onto the water in a comfort-
able, laid-back setting. More so, it allows people to test
out diferent boats and boards to determine what would
best suit them.
So come out to the Social Night from 5:30 – 7 pm every
Monday! Bring your family and friends, try out a stand
up paddle board or a kayak, and then grab a bite from the
Lion’s Head Pub. See you there!

Early in the morning of June 16
th
2013, an act of vandalism
occurred at the Nelson Hydro Six Mile Substation on the
North Shore. Tis caused a power outage of over three
hours for approximately 2900 Nelson Hydro electricity
customers. Te vandals tossed a steel tape measure into the
25,000 volt electrical wires. Being highly conductive the
steel tape initiated a fash-over fault between wires, and the
resulting arc cause considerable damage. Over fve feet of
the tape measure was vaporized in the arc.
We are highlighting the efects of this vandalism for two
reasons:
Firstly, actions like this are extremely dangerous. Although
the culprits may have been at a distance from the fault arc,
there is a high possibility of injury from fying debris and the
arc fash, which can cause severe burns and vision damage.
Nelson Hydro staf are required to observe strict safety
procedures and wear appropriate protective equipment
when inside substations or working with high voltage.
Individuals purposely causing equipment failure from
outside the fence are creating, and exposing themselves to,
extreme hazards that the design of the substation could not
reasonably protect against.
Secondly, these wilful and malicious actions cause
unnecessary power outages which result in unneeded
expenses for emergency response call-outs and equipment
repair. Tese actions also reduce power reliability and may
cause unsafe conditions for home and business owners
which leads to increased power rates for customers.
Nelson Hydro apologizes to those customers who
experienced this outage. We hope that by highlighting this
incident, it will encourage individuals to reconsider before
taking part in this extremely dangerous type of activity to
electrical infrastructure and property.
If anyone witnessed this event, or has information about this
incident please call the RCMP at -250-352-2156. Trough
the RCMP, Nelson Hydro is ofering a reward to anyone
supplying information to the RCMP that leads to the arrest
of the vandals involved in this incident. Please report
anything that you feel may assist in their investigation. For
anonymous tips, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
Reminder: to report a power outage, electrical hazard,
damage to Nelson Hydro equipment or for outage updates,
call 1-877-32HYDRO (1-877-324-9376).

Simple Ways To Cut Calories
People take a variety of approaches when attempting to
lose weight. Some try fad diets that may or may not produce
results, while others commit to a daily exercise regimen.
One of the more popular ways men and women attempt
to lose weight is to cut calories from their diets. Cutting
calories can be an efective way to shed extra pounds, but
it should be done in a way that does not compromise your
overall health for the sake of a slimmer waistline. Any
changes adults make to their diets should be discussed
with their physicians prior to going forward, but the fol-
lowing are a handful of healthy ways to cut calories.
• Put away the potato chips. Potato chips are a favorite snack
of many people, but those delicious chips could be a reason
your belt size is getting bigger. Instead of potato chips, opt for
air-popped popcorn, which contains roughly one-fourth the
amount of calories as potato chips. Popcorn also is a whole
grain, which means you’ll be adding fber, minerals and vita-
mins to your diet while decreasing your caloric intake.
• Add healthy favor to your pasta. Perhaps because it’s
become increasingly available in recent years, whole grain
pasta has risen in popularity. But men and women looking
to cut calories can go even further when cooking up some
pasta for dinner. When making whole grain pasta, cook
about half the amount you normally would, and then add
fresh or even frozen vegetables to the mix. Reducing the
amount of pasta will reduce the amount of calories you
consume, and the vegetables will add nutrients to your
diet. Another way to cut calories from your favorite pasta
dishes is to leave the parmesan cheese on the sideline.
Parmesan cheese can be loaded with in calories, and the
vegetables should add all the favor you need.
• Choose the right condiment for your sandwich. Many
people love a good deli sandwich slathered in mayonnaise.
But while that sandwich might be delicious, that mayo
could be adding a signifcant number of calories to your
meal. One tablespoon of mayonnaise can have as many as
57 calories, while an alternative like mustard can be just as
favorful while containing far fewer calories.

• Say “so long” to sof drinks. Perhaps no method to
cutting calories is more efective for sof drink lovers than
cutting sof drinks from their diets. Sugary beverages are
not only loaded with calories, but such drinks ofset the
body’s blood sugar, increasing appetite as a result. Instead
of reaching for a sof drink at the convenience store or at
home, try water. It’s a much healthier alternative, and it’s
sure to help you achieve a slimmer waistline.
• Don’t forget to eat fruit. Fruit is not just a fresh and
delicious snack, it’s also a fber- and antioxidant-rich and
low-calorie alternative to more popular snack foods. Straw-
berries are a popular fruit, and men and women might be
surprised to learn that a pound of strawberries contains
nearly the same amount of calories as a half-cup of vanilla
ice cream. When eating breakfast in the morning, add some
fruit to your cereal or oatmeal. Allowing the fruit to occupy
some of the space that would otherwise be occupied by
more cereal or oatmeal will lower your caloric intake while
adding fber and antioxidants to your diet. When choosing
fruits, opt for fresh instead of dried fruit. Sugar and cal-
ories are much more concentrated in dried fruits than fresh
fruits, so choose fresh fruits whenever possible.

your long-term savings. You should consider an RDSP if you have a long-term disability

dian resident with a Social Insurance Number (SIN) looking for a long-term savings plan.
Tips If You Get
Into A Fender
Bender
Whether you’re an ex-
perienced road warrior who
drives three hours a day or a
brand new driver, would you
know what to do if you were
involved in a fender bender?
Research by TD Insurance
indicates only 31% of Can-
adians say they are extremely
likely to know the exact steps
to take in this situation.
Dave Minor, a vice president
at TD Insurance, suggests fol-
lowing these steps from TDIn-
surance.com, if you get into a
fender bender:
• Move your vehicle – Half
of the Canadian drivers (51%)
surveyed incorrectly believe
that if they’ve been in an acci-
dent, they should never move
their vehicle from the road
before the police come or they
will not be able to determine
who was at fault. Tis isn’t al-
ways the case. If you’re able to
safely move your vehicle out
of the fow of traf c, while
protecting your vehicle from
further damage, do so.
• Keep calm and carry on –
Try not to panic or make any
rash decisions. When speaking
with the other party involved,
don’t accept money or fault for
the fender bender and don’t
agree to just “forget about it”.
• Contact your insurer –
Tree-in-ten Canadian drivers
(28%) incorrectly believe that
if they are in an auto accident,
they only need to report the
incident to their insurance pro-
vider if their car has sustained
signifcant damage. Te reality
is that your insurance policy
requires you to report any ac-
cident involving loss or dam-
age to people or property. If
you don’t report it, it may afect
your coverage. If another driver
involved reports the accident,
their insurance company may
contact your insurance provid-
er, which could lead to cancel-
lation or non-renewal of your
policy.
• Take notes – Include details
of the accident and identifca-
tion of the vehicles and people
involved. If possible, take pic-
tures and/or draw a diagram
of the accident scene to assist
with documentation. Keep a
notepad and pen in the glove
compartment, just in case.

Blooming in the
Wrong Places
Tey may be colourful, but they’re
seriously out of place! What? Invasive
weeds which we all see, and may enjoy
when blooming. What’s the problem?
Tey were NOT originally in the West
Kootenay ... or even on the North Amer-
ican continent, and having been brought
or found their ways here, are prolifer-
ating either by scattering their seeds, or
spreading their roots (some very deep-
ly!) and taking up soil where native spe-
cies otherwise would grow. Tey also lef
their natural predators behind.
We each can help such invasive plants
as these from spreading further! Before
they go to seed, cut the blooms from
Colourful Orange Hawkweed in yards,
beside trails ... most anywhere we look
right now. Scotch Broom with its bright yellow blooms
now is busy producing seed-heads, but the whole plant
can be cut of just under the soil surface, before the seeds
spread further. It’s also very fammable and may harbour
deer ticks. Japanese Knotweed (no, not Bamboo) is now
considered hazardous waste and/or afecting European
real estate, needs removing, curtailing wherever found
asap! Spotted Knapweed, Cleavers, Common Tansy (hu-
man and pet allergen), Burdock, Tistle, Hoary Alyssum
(poison for horses), Bindweed (commonly called Mor-
ning Glory) and many others of lesser terrestrial priority
are threatening our local economy, native habitats, and
food sustainability. Also of urgent concern are aquatic
species. All need to be handled very carefully, especially
seedheads and roots. Te RDCK transfer station will ac-
cept small quantities, double bagged, free of charge, larger
amounts with prior notice only. DO NOT include with
garden waste.

New Staf Ready For Visitors
Now that summer is here, the Kokanee Park Visitor
Centre is open once again to inform and entertain visitors.
For the second year, the Friends of West Kootenay Parks
have hired 2 full-time students to assist the EcoSociety in
keeping the Visitor Centre open from 9 am to 9 pm. Tis
year, Sabrina Schoch from Nelson and Alexandra Kack
from Verdun, Quebec will be helping visitors with every-
thing from cofee to questions about local parks. Sabrina
is a second year student at UBC Okanagan in History and
Alexandra will be entering McGill this fall to study An-
thropology. Alex-
andra was hired
with the help of a
partial grant from
the federal Young
Canada Works
program which
assists French
speaking students
in fnding jobs
across Canada.
Te BC Parks
Park Enhance-
ment Fund is pro-
viding most of the
funding for the
other position.
Te Friends
were formed in
1988 when Inter-
pretive Services
in BC Parks were
privatized. Until
interpretation was
axed by the Liber-
al government of
the day in 2001,
the Friends hired
one or two stu-
dents on partial
grants to assist
the interpreters
and ran a sales desk to help fund their portion of the wage
package. From 2003 to 2005, the Friends hired a manager
and staf to run the facility in the hopes that the polit-
ical winds would shif in favour of returning funding to
interpretation. For the next 5 summers, the Park Facility
Operator, with the assistance of a staf position from BC
Nature, kept the Visitor Centre open on a limited basis.
Since 2011, the West Kootenay Ecosociety has taken on
the job of providing services.
Continuing the success of last year, the Visitors Centre
will present the RedFish Festival on Sunday, August 25 to
celebrate and learn more about the spawning kokanee sal-
mon. New this year is a week long Eco day camp for 8-12
year olds at the park. Naturalist educator Monica Nissen
and Aboriginal educator Toni Appleby will ofer hikes,
nature studies, native crafs and more. Senior Naturalist
Joanne Siderius will be on hand fve days a week for even-
ing presentations and lots of Jerry’s Rangers kids activities
during the day. Storytelling continues on Saturdays. And
of course, Natures Notebooks and Drawing from Natures
for kids will be back along with three morning yoga class-
es for adults.
In addition to BC Parks, funds have been granted by
RDCK Areas E and F, Columbia Basin Trust, and the Os-
prey Foundation for 2013 to help keep this vital attraction
open in Kokanee Creek Park.
Local Film Debuts At
Civic Teatre
A Kootenay-made short flm, which has screened at over
ffeen festivals in Canada and internationally over the past
year, will make its long-awaited Nelson debut next week.
Eyes In Te Forest: Te Portraiture of Jim Lawrence ofers a
rare and stunning look into the world of well-known Koo-
tenay wildlife photographer Jim Lawrence. Te flm will be
screened at the Civic Teatre on Wednesday, July 17 at 7
pm, along with the with feature documentary Manufactured
Landscapes, as part of Touchstones Nelson’s Art & Activism
event series. Filmmaker Miriam Needoba and photograph-
er Jim Lawrence will be on hand afer the screenings for a
question and answer period with the audience.
Eyes in the Forest interweaves the startling imagery of
Jim Lawrence’s still photography with Needoba’s sublime
cinematography of the West Kootenays. Te flm is both a
restrained study of landscape and wildlife, and a conver-
sation between two artists and their art forms.
“We are excited to be able to have the Nelson premiere
at Te Civic Teatre with its new digital projector,” says
Needoba. “We will be screening a DCP (Digital Cinema
Print) of the flm, so it will be shown in the best possible way.”
Nelson-based Needoba is hoping to fnd a broadcast-
er for the flm, which has already screened at Planet In
Focus Environmental Film Festival, and is currently in
competition at DOCUTAH flm festival. Needoba had
some local help with this, her frst documentary flm,
working with sound editor Luke Martin and sound de-
signer Adham Shaik. Te flm was produced with the as-
sistance of the National Film Board of Canada, Columbia
Kootenay Cultural Alliance and Columbia Basin Trust.
More details about the flm can be found online at www.

Diverse Range Of Projects
To Beneft Basin Youth
A range of projects including those that support youth
engagement, leadership, employment and entrepreneur-
ship were recently approved to receive funding through
the Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) Youth Grants Program
(YGP). Sixteen projects in total will receive over $92,000
to beneft youth around the Basin.
“Our Youth Grants Program has supported a variety of
youth projects throughout the Basin region over the last
eight years,” said Sabrina Curtis, CBT Director, Sector
Initiatives. “A number of exciting projects will help build
youth leadership while increasing youth engagement and
opportunities in Basin communities.”
Te Kaslo and District Public Library Association is one
of the groups receiving funds through YGP for their Youth
Programs at the Library project. With the funds the library
will coordinate six programs selected by youth which aim
to engage and support youth in using the library.
“We’re really excited about ofering diverse youth pro-
gramming at the library,” said Annie Reynolds, Library
Services Coordinator. “Te project will engage Kaslo area
youth with meaningful and interesting programming and
workshops including crafing, computer programming,
and flm making and animation as well as a youth book
club. Te funds will also assist the library in ofering a sup-
portive environment to youth.”
Te Creston Teen Cofeehouse project will also provide
a space for teens to showcase their creativity while they
learn valuable skills through assisting in the operations
of the cofeehouse – skills that will be transferable to the
workplace. Teens will be responsible to develop the cof-
fee house business plan, organize entertainment and work
a rotating schedule with anyone wishing to learn barista,
server, sound equipment technical skills, entrepreneur-
ship, promotion and business management.
“We have talked about music jams, craf sales, art dis-
plays and we are confdent the teens will fnd many more
exciting subjects to consider,” said Lendina Bambrick,
Executive Director of Kootenai Community Centre.
St. Mary’s Indian Band will use YGP funds to host a
Youth Campout to engage youth in Ktunaxa knowledge
and traditions while experiencing positive and healthy
recreational activities.
“Te three-day Ka Knithwitik Youth Campout will com-
bine fun with learning,” said Johanne Allard, St. Mary’s
Indian Band Social Development Worker. “During the
campout, youth will create relationships and the oppor-
tunity for support while gaining a greater understanding
of traditional Ktunaxa knowledge.”
YGP funds up to $15,000 per project that directly bene-
ft Basin youth aged 12 to 29. A range of organizations,
school districts, First Nations organizations and local gov-
ernments—plus youth aged 15 to 29 with a sponsoring or-
ganization—can apply.
CBT’s Youth Advisory Committee (YAC), made up of 12
youth age 15 to 29, adjudicate the YGP applications.
Te next intake will take place in fall 2013. For more in-
formation, visit www.cbt.org/ygp.

My name is Missy and I came to the SPCA when my owners
found that they no longer had time for me. I`m a very large
Siamese cross, with grey markings and bright blue eyes, short
hair which I love having brushed daily. I`m also very friendly,
and looking for a forever home without other cats or dogs. If
I sound like the cat for you, or you would like to learn more
details, come down to the Nelson SPCA for a visit or call the
humans at 250-352-7178.
I would like to thank the selfess volunteers, fantastic
coaches, generous businesses and amazing riders for
helping make this year’s camp a huge success. Without
the continued support of our community it would
not be possible to run this valuable program!!
