The course outcomes (COs): 1. This course will familiarise the various steps involved basic design process in the engineering field. 2. To understand the principles involved in evaluating the shape and dimensions of a component to satisfy functional and strength requirements. 3. To learn to use standard practices and standard data.

4. Identify loading of machine elements and perform stress and deformation calculations to design safe machine parts. 5. To learn to use catalogues and standard machine components.

Course Overview and Context This course is offered in fifth semester of B.E/B.Tech. programme in Mechanical Engineering as professional core subject. The pre-requisite to this course are Quality Control & Reliability Engineering Mathematics, Statistics and Numerical Methods. The main objective of the course is to make the student to understand the important concepts and procedures behind the Metrology and Measurements. Learning of this course begins with the understanding of simple concepts and definitions such as precision, accuracy, repeatability, response and so on. This subject is useful to understand the functions of various measuring instruments like Tool maker microscope, Angle Decker, Gleason gear testing machine, Co-ordinate measuring machine, Laser interferometry, Computer Aided Inspection and so on.
