President Barack Obama The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW Washington, D.C. 20500 Mr. Rex W. Tillerson Exxon Mobil Corporation 5959 Las Colinas Blvd. Irving, Texas 75039 Re: Stewardship of Creation Dear President Obama and Mr. Tillerson, Last night I participated with a group of about 40 people at the Nebraska Interfaith Power and Light gathering in Lincoln, Nebraska. We all represented a wide diversity of faiths and beliefs. One thing we had in common was awe and love of creation, and commitment to stewardship. Kim, Minister of Sustainability, began with a reading and a prayer, then showed a video about the Interfaith Power & Light mission and activities: http://bit.ly/ipl-earth-stewardship-april-19 The following statement struck me: “How can you sit in a pew and profess a love for God and then watch, sit back and watch creation be destroyed?” -Reverand Sally Bingham I implore you to assess the alignment of your secular and religious values with stewardship of creation. Take into consideration the silos in which you place the sanctity of capitalistic mores, economic metrics, political maneuvering, laws and regulations, corporate citizenship, etc.
Both of you, President Obama and Rex Tillerson, have a rare opportunity to show the nation and, indeed, the entire world, that government and industry can stand together of the good of humanity, above profits. We merely have to pick a few measurable ways to cut CO2 emissions and start NOW! Commit to not spend more moneys for any capital investment that expands the carbon infrastructure. Charles Grant made such a bold decision and ended slavery in Great Britain.
