In Feliks Skrzynecki, the choice made by the son to not belonging in to his fathers culture whilst In Postcard, the choice is consciously made to forget aspects of the past and his home. In Katherine Mansfields short story The Garden Party, the protagonist also makes a choice to understand and adapt. Collectively, it is through this decision-making process that the individual gains understanding and insight link to belonging . Feliks Skrzynecki portrays the personas feelings of disparity between his fathers strong sense of cultural identity and his confusion about his own identitymake TS less specific. The poem opens to demonstrate Feliks strong connection to which place? Austrlaia or his hometown place and his copatriots. Hetechnique? loved his garden like an only child, sweeping its paths/ten times around the world. The hyperbolemove up evokes a sense of dedication and affinity to the garden. He also finds a sense of belonging through his cohesion with his Polish friends in the enjambment Talking, they reminisced/about farms where paddocks flowered to show his belonging within his own racial group. However, this is juxtaposed to refer to him as Peter or Skrynecki, not both Skrzyneckis own disconnection from his fathers culture. The recurring motif of the Polish language while stumbling over tenses in Caesars Gallic warforgot his first Polish word shows that the persona has chosen to belong to the Australian culture. The persona unconsciously remembers parts of the Polish language as he grew older; Remnants of a language/ I inherited unknowingly. The enjambment emphasises heavily places emphasis on unknowingly, highlighting the personas choice of lack of involvement and knowledge in his cultural inheritance and his consequent lack of belonging in this domain. The poem ends with the contrast between Felikss firm sense of identity and the personas anxiety about his own identity. Dont start sentence with quoteWatched me pegging my tents further and further south of Hadrian's Wall The allusion to Hadrians wall reinforces the separation between Peter and Feliks. Peter experiences old cultures moving towards the new culture of Australia. It is evident Peter cannot grasp the ambivalence he feels towards Polish culture and about where he truly belongs and thus finds it impossible to assimilate which epitomizes his isolation. Similarly in Garden Party, the protagonist experiences dislocation from her family due to her initial ignorance and the choice to understand the social hierarchy of societychoice in this topic sentence is clumsy. It is a truncated Bildungsroman presenting the growth of a young woman from not understanding to knowing the social class division. The protagonist, Laura discovers death and awakens to a mature perception of reality after her exposure to poverty. Mansfield uses the idyllic setting of an upper class society to contrast with the workmen in carried staves covered with rolls of canvas, and they had big tool bags slung on their backs. Like Skrzyneckis dislocation from the father, Laura does not belong to her mothers world. They are both evidently displaced due to lack of knowledge and not understanding as shown in the irony This life is Wee-ary, A tear-a Sigh. Despite the luxury she lives in, the song is mournful, which portrays her disassociation from the upper class. It is through her choice to not follow the traditional social class play. The hat explain context of hat worn by Laura symbolises the expectations on the protagonist you rfere to her twice in this sentence. Yet the protagonist chooses to leave behind the pretentious upper class norms and apologises to the lower class people reword this as she says, Forgive me hat. This demonstrates the protagonists choice to not belong to her family and upper classs norms.

Parallel to Feliks Skrzynecki, Postcard addresses the demands of cultural heritage and the personas choice to engage in and belong to his home, Warsaw. The persona initially feels alienated and disengaged to the postcard. The title-Postcard is a symbol of temporary residence and holiday rather than permanence. This reflects that (technique) Warsaw: Panorama of the Old Town is not the personas home. The postcard also shows haunting qualities shown in A post card sent by a friend haunts me which signify the personas unease and uncertain connection to this place. This typical postcard takes on an added has a subjective significance of the massive destruction and change during WWII in Warsaw which the persona does not belong to. The scene in the postcard of the Great City/That bombs destroyed/Its people massacred portray the brutal and bitterness about the fate of the population. It demonstrates the sense of loss through stories and memories which the persona has not experienced. It is ambiguous at the end of the poem whether he will strive to form a connection with this place by visiting Warsaw. This city calls to him and stresses the undeniable pull of his cultural heritage, which affects him in ways he can not fully relate to. Although the persona shows rejection to acknowledge his Polish culture, it is evident that he is willing to establish affiliation as he recognises it. The tone changes as the poet rhetorically asks about his choice of home; Whats my choice/To be?, which mirrors his recognition of his home. The personas hesitation to acknowledge the magneticreword quality of his birthplace but I stare/At the photograph highlights the undeniable and mesmerising bonds. Skrzynecki highlights the significance and impact of cultural identity regardless of context. The power of his cultural heritage is reinforced by the use of direct speech, We will meet/Before you die. The high modality and assertive tone reflects the personas final recognition that to create identity, you have to know where you come from. In conclusion, composers have collectively depicted that individuals have the choice to develop rapport with their heritage as culture defines ones identity. At the same time, people also have the choice to not agree with social class divisions that shapes societys expectations. Think you should put the 2 skrynzecki poems after each other because links better with the cultural ideas
