Object Lesson #1 - A Balloon Shows the Importance of Prayer

t may be hard for kids to understand how seriously God takes our prayers. This lesson using a balloon will show that words are not empty; they take form and substance and are very real in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Household Object: Balloon Other Materials: Large balloons, one for yourself and one for each child Scripture: Revelation 5:7-8 (To be read before the lesson) Lesson: Sometimes we may not want to pray. We may feel that prayers are just silent thoughts that dont do a whole lot. We cant see prayers as they go out of our mouths. 7 The Lamb went over and took the scroll from the right hand of the one who sat on the throne. 8 After he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders knelt down before him. Each of them had a harp and a gold bowl full of incense, which are the prayers of Gods people. Not only thatPrayers go up to heaven and they take form! Up in heaven, according to the scripture we just read, our prayers take on a beautiful scent, like the smell of incense. The citizens of heaven have great bowls filled with our prayers, and they appreciate them and celebrate with them and worship God with those prayers. Try and catch the air in front of your face again as you pray: Father, make me a really good teacher so my students will know you as well as I do.

Pretend you are trying to grab hold of the air in front of your face as you pray: Our Father, who art in heaven Whisper: And if our prayers are silent, or little whispers, we cant even hear them It may seem like its much more worthwhile to go outside and play! At least our friends talk back to us in a voice we can hear. Have you ever heard Gods voice?? However! That is all deception. Prayers are very real. Jesus does not miss a single one!

The Lords Prayer ~ 4

Am I being silly to try to catch my prayers? Yes. But are my prayers real? Yes. Heres one way to know that prayers are real and they take shape up in heaven. Take out your balloon. Each time you say a line of the Lords Prayer, stop to blow a small breath into the balloonlook very sincere, like you are thinking about every line between breaths:
9Our

heaven. You are sending something up to him that is very real! Thats why its important to not fool around when you pray. Thats why its important to understand the realness of God. Your earnest prayers are what connect you to himand dont think that he misses a single word you say! This balloon will not fly up to heaven why not? Its filled with air and not helium. StillIm going to send my prayers up to God nowLook up at the ceiling and, keeping a pinch hold on the balloon, let go of the mouth and let all the air fly upward. Because I really meant my prayerit will go up to heaven and turn into incense. Before learning the Lords Prayer, lets learn the most important thing, which is to pray to God sincerely, with our whole hearts, so that what were sending up isnt a lot of hot air! Have them take turns praying, blowing into the balloon and letting that prayer go on up to heaven. It can be healing for a friend or family member, thanks for something awesome that happened, a request that they really want. Offer praise for all prayers spoken with great sincerity. Do you believe that your prayers are in heaven now? Do you believe that they smell really great up there, like incense or flowers? Because thats what Revelation says is true!

Father who are in heaven, kingdom come,

Hallowed be thy name.

10 Thy

Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.

11 Give 12 And

us this day our daily bread. forgive us our debts, lead us not into temptation,

as we forgive our debtors.

13 And

but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Pinch the mouth of the balloon but dont tie it Amen. Does this balloon have a bigger shape now? Yes. Whats inside of it? Air. But what else is inside of it? Your prayer. When our prayers get up to heaven, its as if they take shape. Like this balloon. If you can picture balloons wandering all over the skies of heaven, that would be like all of our prayers. When we pray to God, lets remember that its like sending a balloon up to

Lesson #2 - Difference between Prayer and Much-Speaking

hildren need to understand that, even though we have some memorized prayers which are an important part of tradition, sincere talking with God is the best way to pray. They should understand that saying the Lords Prayer 25 times without thinking about its meaning is the same as sending hot air up to heaven. They want to send things that God can actually listen to!

This lesson using lunch bags and cookies ought to help get the point across. Note: This lesson requires your assistant. If you dont have one, pick one of the kids to help out and go over this before class. Materials: 9 brown lunch bags 9 cookies Crown or bed sheet robe (to put on assistant so that she can look a little like God up in heaven) Scripture: Matthew 6:7-8 (To be read before the lesson) And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. First of all, let me tell you how great I can pray! I can say the Lords Prayer 25 times without even thinking about it! I For the next part, ham it up and be very arrogant and proud of yourself. can do it on my knees! I can do it with

Put your bags on the table in front of you folded. Put the cookies out of sight for now. Lets pretend that [Assistant] is God up in heaven, and I am a Christian here on earth. Give the assistant the crown to put on or the bed sheet to make into a toga.

one foot in the airthats how great a pray-er I am! NowIm going to send my prayers up to God, knowing that he will gladly receive my prayers. Pick up one of the bags, dramatically with your pinky in the air. Snap it opened. Our Father who are in heaven! Very snooty, pass it off to the assistant. Open a second bag. Hallowed be thy name!Pass it off to the assistant. Open a third bag. Thy Kingdom come! Pass it off to the assistant. Open a fourth bag. Thy will be done!Pass it off to assistant. Have her start to look very confused, staring into the bags. Have your assistant say, Umexcuse me? Do you mind if I say something? Why, YES, Lord! Are you going to compliment me on my marvelous praying? Have your assistant say, Umactually no. These prayers? She should drop all the bags except one accidentally-on-purpose and shake the one remaining. Theyre empty.

Gasp. What do you mean, my prayers are empty?? Whats supposed to be in them?? Have your assistant sayUhthought! Meaning! Sincerity! Love! Caring! Why dont you try again? Pick up all the bags, including the one from the assistant. Wow. I thought I was doing so well. That was humbling. This time..Im going to mean my prayers. Bring out the cookies. Put one in one of the bags. Our Father, who art in heavenFather I love to picture you up in heaven making a nice place for me and my family Absently pass it off to the assistant. Hallowed be thy nameFather, you are so awesome. You made the deep sea fish and the farthest star, and my mom and my dad! Absently pass off another cookie in another bag to the assistant. She should look pretty impressed when she looks in the bag. Thy Kingdom ComeFather, I cant wait until your son Jesus reigns in Jerusalem again someday!

The Lords Prayer ~ 7

Absently pass off another cookie in another bag to the assistant. Thy will be doneFather, sometimes I dont want to do things your way, but give me the good sense to anyway! On earth as it is in heaven. Absently pass off another cookie in another bag to the assistant. At some point she should remark, Wow! I really love cookies! Give us this day our daily bread Father, make sure that my family has enough to eat! Pass off cookie in bag And forgive us our trespassesFather, forgive me for yelling at my cat this morning. She didnt mean to spill her food.Pass off cookie in bag As we forgive those who trespass against usFather, I forgive my neighbor for yelling at me the other day. She might have been having problems of her own. Pass off cookie in bag Lead us not into temptationFather, dont let me give in to gossiping about you-know-whoI really want to sometimes!Pass off cookie in bag

But deliver us from evilFather, dont let me be tempted tomorrow. Give me the strength to only say nice things. Pass off cookie in bag For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever I love you God! I love you times ten! Amen! Have assistant bite into a cookie and say: Well done, good and faithful servant! That was a super prayer! To class: You see, you can be as eloquent and stuck up and Miss Perfect as you want. But if you arent thinking about what youre saying to God, its empty. He wants to be filled with your prayers! Lets fill up on some cookieswhich can show us another great thing about the way to really pray!

Game #1 - Put the Lords Prayer in Order

This easy game will help young children memorize the Lords Prayer and encourage older kids to have fun while saying it! Materials: Lords Prayer Flip Cards (included) Object: Have all children be in their proper order, depending which cards they are holding, and having recited the Lords Prayer in less than a minute. Preparation: Cut up the Lord s Prayer Flip Cards. There are nine cards all together. Keep the flip cards! They are used with another game also! Instructions: Count the number of students. If you have more than nine students, some will have to team up in pairs. If you have less than ten students, play with the first five cards and, in a second round, the second five cards. Shuffle the cards and pass out to students. When you say Go! students have a minute to get themselves in order so that the cards containing the Lords Prayer read in order, and then they must read the prayer aloud. If they cant do it in time, reshuffle and try again. Repeat the game, starting with step #1. At the end, have them all recite the Lords Prayer simultaneously.

The Lords Prayer ~ 9

Game #2 - Lords Prayer Flip Card Game

This game using flip cards will help kids think of what each part of the Lords prayer means until they are comfortable using the images without having to rack their brains. It will make their home prayer lives easier. Materials: Lords Prayer Flip Cards (included) Stop watch Object: To be able to flip over a card containing a piece of the Lords Prayer, and immediately repeat a personal prayer that would correspond with its meaning. Preparation: Put all flip cards face down on a table at one end of the room. Have students divide up into two teams, trying to mix older kids with younger ones on the same team, so they can help each other out. Line students up at the far end of the room away from the table. Instructions: When you say go! one student from the first team will run up to the table and pull a flip card. Time him! Depending on which part of the Lords Prayer is on the flip card, he or she will have to say a personal prayer that corresponds with the real meaning of the portion on the card. For example: If the student pulls, as we forgive those who trespass against us, he will have to say, I forgive Jonny for being mean to me on Tuesday! If a student is up who is too young to read well, an older student may go too and read for him, but cannot give the answer. The student must answer in a complete sentence. The student must then run back to the starting line. If his reply to the flip card was accurate and shows that he understands the meaning, his team gets to keep the card. If his answer made no sense or he is timed out, he has to put the flip card back on the table. Repeat for the other team. Play until all the flip cards are gone. The team with the most flip cards and/or lowest times win. Closing: Obviously when we pray, we are not in a race! We should speak to God without rushing and take our time to listen when we ask him for something! What we learned today is to think of what each part of the Lords Prayer means. When we really pray, we should apply it.

Meditation Activity : Praying the Lords Prayer with Meaning

Kids memorize the Lords Prayer quite easily just from regular use. This group meditation will help them to understand what thoughts and images to put with each of the nine parts of the prayer so that it becomes meaningful and not just rote. Its great if this exercise can be done outside, where kids can hear the wind rustling in the trees, see the clouds moving, or hear the sounds of the sea. Two different suggestions make the game appropriate for younger and older kids. Instructions: 1. Use Appendix 2 as a guide for this exercise. 1. If you dont live in a noisy area and the weather is nice, take the kids outside to a nice, peaceful spot. Have everyone sit in a circle and hold hands. 2. Say the first of the nine parts of the Lords Prayer, read the meaning, then apply it personally to your own life as per the example in the Appendix. a. For older students: Have each student go around, do the same, and offer up the same sort of applied, personal prayer. b. For younger students: After you open with the first example from the Appendix, state the second part of the Lords Prayer, followed by the meaning. Have one child add an applied, personal prayer for that part. Repeat for each of the ten parts. At the end, students should be clear on how to apply the words of Christ!

Reprint: How to Teach Kids the Lords Prayer

Lords Prayer for Little Ones Makes Memorizing Easier This article, written by a mom and Sunday school teacher in New Jersey, provides a cool means to making the Lords Prayer clear to young children! Our Father, in Heaven, hollow be Thy name that was my version of the Lords prayer when I was a little girl in Sunday school. As you can imagine, I was pretty confused! It was many more years before I learned it correctly. One of the problems was I was never actually taught the Lords prayer; we just recited it as a class. The prayer that Jesus taught His disciples to pray is a beautiful example to us as believers of how to approach God ourselves. But, it can also be a daunting task for children to learn it. Its full of big words that are sometimes hard to say and even harder to understand. These ideas can help you make teaching the Lords prayer easier for your Sunday school class. Create a Visual of the Lords Prayer A great way to teach kids is to provide them with something interesting to look at. You can easily make a poster with the Lords prayer on it with everyday craft supplies. Using a large piece of poster board, write out the Lords prayer line by line. At the end of some of the lines, add an interesting picture to help them remember that line. If youre good at drawing, you can make a picture yourself, or print one you find online. Heres an example: Our Father who art in heaven (picture of a bright, castle like city surrounded by clouds) Hallowed be thy name Thy kingdom come (a kings crown) Thy will be done On earth as it is in heaven (Earth and the bright city picture next to each other) Give us this day our daily bread (loaf of bread) And forgive us our debts As we forgive our debtors (broken shackles) And do not lead us into temptation (the word Temptation in a circle with a line through it) But deliver us from evil For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen ( a picture of Jesus, maybe on the throne)

Be prepared to help explain some of the words the children might be unfamiliar with, such as hallowed, debts and debtor and for younger crowds, temptation. Most kids love music, and one tool Ive used with my own children is teaching the Lords prayer through song. If youre musical, you can make up your own tune, or you can choose from some of these great songs by well-known artists. Steve Green, Our Father in Heaven, from Hide em in Your Heart Volume 1 The Wonder Kids, The Lords Prayer, from Bible Songs for Baby and Me The Praise Baby Collection, The Lords Prayer, from Sleepytime Lullabies All of these songs are catchy yet reverent, and you can find them in Mp3 format on Amazon.com. As you prepare to teach the Lords prayer, take some time to study it and pray it yourself. It is amazing to think we can pray the same words our Lord Jesus did. What a precious lesson to teach our Sunday school kids!

Craft #3 - Praying Hands / Special Prayers

hat the Lord was really giving his disciples with the Lords Prayer was meant to serve as a list of subjects. He was implying that we should pray for anything that is important to us. Putting special prayers inside praying hands is more meaningful than reciting words without thinking about them, and it will help kids understand the spirit in which the Lords Prayer was intended

7. While that is drying, take a quarter sheet of the printer paper and make a list of things you would like to pray for right now: Healing for a family member, safety of a troop, a new job for parents, any needs of your own. 8. Fold the paper small enough so that it will fit into the pouch of the praying hands Conclusion: When Jesus gave his disciples the Lords Prayer, he was answering their question, What should we say to God? They were curious like we are, and they wanted to know: God is so importantshould we save talking to him only for emergencies, or very special things? Will he be offended if we just start talking away about things that are important to us? Jesus answer, the Lords Prayer, meant GO FOR IT! What the Lord was really giving his disciples was a list of subjects: How great God is, how wed like to behave, whom we should forgive, what we are sorry for, and how much we believe in Gods desire and ability to hear it all! He meant we should pray for anything that is important to us. Putting special prayers inside praying hands is more meaningful than reciting words without thinking about them. Lets pray about the items inside the prayer hands when we get home Lets keep them in a safe place. Every once in a while, sneak that special piece of paper out and see how God is moving to answer the prayers!

Materials Construction paper, two different-colored sheets for each child Printer paper Scissors Stapler Stick glue Markers or pens Preparation Cut printer paper into quarter sheets Instructions 1. Put one piece of construction paper under the other and line them up. 2. Staple them together at the corners to keep them from coming apart. 3. Put your hand down on the top sheet and trace around it. 4. Cut out both sheets at once so that they look like praying hands 5. Glue together the thumbs, fingers, and the side of the hand under the pinkie, leaving an opening under the palms. 6. Write on one of the hands, MY SPECIAL PRAYERS.
