Heavy rainfall has been nuisance for farms
By NICK COHEN
The Shamong Sun
While the region has become
frustrated with constant rainy
forecasts, pop up thunderstorms
and accustomed to never leaving
home without an umbrella, local
farms and produce stands are
dealing with the weather at a
much more personal level.
“We’ve been affected by the
weather, there’s no doubt. From
the lack of sunlight to lack of po-
tential yields in the future, it has
definitely impacted us,” said
Joann Gsell, a member of the
Russo family and employee at
Russo’s Farm Market in Taberna-
cle.
The amount of rainfall was un-
like any other in history for June,
confirmed by The American As-
sociation of State Climatologists.
New Jersey’s statewide average
precipitation totaled 9.57 inches,
a record for any June dating back
to 1895. Shamong saw 12.40 inch-
es.
“The amount of rainfall was
absolutely unprecedented for
June,” Gsell said. “We’ve had
years or months with too much
rainfall but not in June. It’s just
unexpected.”
Farms are faced with two big
issues due to the unprecedented
amount of rainfall.
“Crops that are planted already
and trying to grow cannot grow
NICK COHEN/The Shamong Sun
Farms in Shamong and throughout the region have struggled with the unseasonably wet weather in June and early July. ‘Our plants already
in the ground have gotten too much water and there are some things we cannot plant because of how saturated the ground is,’ Russo’s Farm
employee Joann Gsell said.

Sheriff’s department presents
‘Share the Keys’ Aug. 10
The Burlington County Sher-
iff ’s Department will be holding a
free presentation designed to re-
duce teen driver crashes by in-
creasing parental involvement
called “Share the Keys.” The pro-
gram will be held Aug. 10 from 1
p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Emergency
Services Training Center, 53
Academy Drive, Westampton.
This program is designed for
teens who are just getting or have
their driving permit as well as
their parents. Door prizes, in-
cluding AAA memberships, will
be given out during the class.
For already licensed teens the
department is offering two defen-
sive driving classes on Aug. 10
and Aug. 24 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30
p.m. at the Emergency Services
Training Center. Participants
are eligible to receive an insur-
ance discount of up to 5 percent
as well as have two points re-
moved from their driving record.
A $10 check or money order is re-
quired by The National Safety
Council.
The department is encourag-
ing parents to attend the class
with their teen driver.
“Motor vehicle crashes are the
leading cause of death for young
people in New Jersey between the
ages of 16 and 20,” Sheriff Jean
Stanfield said.
Every 10 minutes a teen in New
Jersey is involved in a car crash,
and these are most often due to
driver distraction, inexperience,
speeding and failure to yield.
To register for the Share the
Keys Program, call (609) 265-3788.
Registration for the defensive
driving class can be done on-line
at www.co.burlington.nj.us/sher-
iff.
properly because we’ve had not
enough sun and too much water.
“Because of how much rain
we’ve had, the ground is saturat-
ed.
“Plants are sitting in water,
and when that happens, they will
eventually die,” Gsell said.
The saturation of the fields
presents another problem for
farms like Russo’s – the ability to
plant at all.
“We went almost three weeks
without being able to plant corn.
With a gap like that, we will be af-
fected in the coming months in
how much there will be available
to harvest,” Gsell said.
The concern raised by most
farmers was not having the vol-
ume of produce that customers
are used to. Many voiced that
later in the season, when patrons
are looking to buy corn or other
seasonal produce, they’ve forgot-
ten how rainy June and early
July were because it doesn’t affect
them as it does a farm. The im-
pact is felt for the rest of the year
by the rain the region has gotten
this summer.
Last week’s hot and dry weath-
er, with temperatures in the mid
to upper 90s, was just what the
doctor ordered for farms still cul-
tivating soggy soil.

The Lenape Regional High
School District Board of Educa-
tion approved a three-year em-
ployment contract at last week’s
meeting with the Lenape District
Support Staff Association, which
represents district bus drivers
and custodial staff, according to a
LRHSD release.
The LDSSA ratified the con-
tract on July 10, following negotia-
tions with the LRHSD BOE.
According to the release, the
three-year contract includes an
average salary increase of 2.3 per-
cent and was updated to be in
compliance with current statutes
governing public employee contri-
butions to health insurance.
"This contract is good for the
district and our employees," said
LRHSD board member John Heit-
mann Jr., who chairs the negotia-
tions committee. "We reached
agreement in a timely manner,
which helped keep morale high
for everyone involved. The board
and LDSSA share a commitment
to maintaining the quality of our
schools and the safety and securi-
ty of our students."
"We hammered out an agree-
ment in a remarkably short time,
and our members had no com-
plaints when we ratified the con-
tract," LDSSA President Victoria
DeSantis said. "We're members of
the community and take pride in
our jobs. We also recognize the
economic needs of the district,
and we were willing to work with-
in their budget to reach an agree-
ment."
In other news:
The state Department of Edu-
cation Office of Fiscal Accounta-
bility and Finance audited the dis-
trict, reviewing binders on record,
according to Chris Heilig, the dis-
trict’s assessment, accountability
and planning coordinator.
The audit did not uncover any
fiscal problems, and the district
will not have to return any funds
provided through grants. Howev-
er, 16 procedural findings were re-
ported, according to Heilig.
“A couple examples include not
properly documenting how we did
business with vendors,” Heilig
said. “We need to issue purchase
orders before services, just as an
example of what they found.”
The district’s next step is to ap-
peal or create a corrective action
plan.
“The corrective action plan is
an easy solution for us,” Heilig
said. “Since there were no mone-
tary findings, we don’t need to ap-
peal.”
According to superintendent
Carol Birnbohm, some of the pro-
cedures were already corrected at
the end-of-the-year evaluations in
the spring. Board members will
review the report to discuss addi-
tional corrective action.
The board will vote and certify
there was a discussion at the next
meeting.
The next meeting will be held
Aug. 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the adminis-
trative building, located at 93 Wil-
low Grove Road in Shamong.

T
he Internet is quite a powerful
tool, but, sometimes, its power
can be used for bad instead of
good. Information as harmless as
facts, someone’s opinion or pictures of
people having fun can turn harmful in
a second.
Inappropriate comments on a photo;
attacking someone’s character, race,
religion or sexuality; cyber-bullying;
or straight mis-reporting facts all take
advantage of the Internet’s power to
do bad.
Social media sites such as Facebook,
Twitter and Instagram make it easier
to connect people all over the world,
and even easier to do so in a negative
fashion.
But, luckily, there is some good
going on in the digital world.
The state recently released its Uni-
form Crime Reporting rates, and local
police departments have attributed
significant drops in crime to the their
utilization of social media.
In Evesham Township, for example,
crime dropped 21.7 percent. In
Moorestown, crime dropped 36.9 per-
cent. Officials from both departments
say their presence on Facebook and
Twitter has helped tremendously.
Both of those departments use the
social media sites, as well as informa-
tion sharing service Nixle, to not only
notify residents of crimes, alerts and
issues, but also as communication
tools for residents to submit their own
issues and concerns directly to the de-
partment.
They’ve found that it’s much easier,
and more efficient, for residents to
submit information on the computer
than it is to call in or stop by their of-
fices.
It’s great to see that police depart-
ments at a local level are utilizing the
latest technology to make their jobs
easier and more efficient, and provid-
ing more avenues for residents to feel
safe and communicate with their local
police force.
Evesham and Moorestown aren’t
the only towns with police depart-
ments doing this; they are just exam-
ples.
To those departments that are doing
the same, bravo; keep it up. To those
that aren’t, it’s time to step up and go
out on a limb. It’s worth it.
Social media more than just pics

YMCA blood drive July 27
The need for blood is constant. This is
especially true during summer months
when regular donors are on vacation and
schools are closed.
This year, help the YMCA of Burlington
and Camden Counties support the needs of
the community and provide the American
Red Cross with the ultimate gift of blood.
Join the Y and the Burlington County
Chamber of Commerce save lives by par-
ticipating in a blood drive on Saturday,
July 27 from 10:45 to 3:45 p.m. in Studio A
at the Mt. Laurel YMCA, located at 59 Cen-
terton Road in Mt. Laurel.
“The need for blood never takes a vaca-
tion, and in the summer, when people are
away and there are emergencies that re-
quire blood and blood products, we need to
assure our hospitals that when patients
need blood, it will be there for them,” said
Julianne Trinidad, executive director, Red
Cross of Camden & Burlington Counties.
“One unit of blood can help up to five hos-
pital patients. Please help us save lives.”
“Just like the Y, the Burlington County
Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to the
local community. “
“By joining forces, we’re able to appeal
to local residents and the business commu-
nity to do something that truly saves lives
– give blood,” said Kristi Howell, president
and CEO, Burlington County Chamber of
Commerce.
