Pride Fever
They stumble about as if to seek refuge from a hot afternoon sun. With glassy eyes, they ask questions with a special sense of urgency. Will they make the “early bird deadline?” Each has a special issue, which by understood necessity requires a special ritual of handholding. A listen to the voice mail is particularly perplexing, nameless individuals who, normally sentient, are now asking circular questions. Pride fever has overcome we hapless souls who come upon the Community Center days before the Pride. Then the event, the high holy days of Pride June 9 and 10th will be over. Our 15,000 friends will have attended. We will have survived another “ring cycle” of Pride in the Nasti. Yet another “endless entertainment” will conclude. From comedy shows, Broadway shows, to film fests, bar fundraisers, drag races, drag shows, parades, rally and pep rallies all the beads and rattles of Pride will have passed in a twinkling. It was glorious and it was grand. A mere fortnight later, we will sit upon our Naughahyde throne and speak of Prides past with ancient crones at the Center. As the Pride fever subsides, minds settle and vesicles once full of juice now dry and clear, we will say with one tongue, “Oh that was two weeks ago, it’s dead sister.” But a mere 40 sunsets post Pride, The Center will convene the annual wrap up ritual, the third Saturday of July 2007 CE at the stroke of Noon. Few will attend, and four months later history will record that forces with cool intelligence unsympathetic to the plight of Pride organizers – will make claims loudly: “It is time for change.” And, “We were not consulted.” In a brief moment of sidereal delight of Pride, we search the heavens for instruction so all of us may be bound mystically beyond one Pride weekend. Like pilgrims seeking a cure at Lourdes, we receive a miracle of Pride and praise the Goddess for a day. We then quickly forget our obligation to continue to invoke and praise the spirit. So, is this thing called Pride. We enjoy it, consume it, and become absorbed in it – even momentarily reborn in it, yet we fail to attend this shrine for our sisters, brothers and friends past. It is our undoing, this lack of service to Pride. For all its grandness, it is left to the hands of the few who toil, complain not and control much. Pride may to us appear but a speck on the celestial calendar orb, just a second weekend in June. But, the drawing of careful plans for next year’s feast and harvest called “Pride” begins this July. Fresh ideas are required, new directions are needed and souls who wish to work consistently over eleven months are sought.

and souls who wish to work consistently over eleven months are sought. We pray for a Pride fever more virulent, that it infects our spirit not just two days a year, but throughout the calendar.
